His name is John and he works down the road from me about 4 miles away, when he is in the county at his workshop. He done a lot of work on my mates stolly, very good and very quick, he likes a lot of work for the day to keep him busy.
I would guess that the wire is too thin and/or already had a break in it hence the tape so it could have been "arcing" and skoke would come from that, I would go up a gauge of wire when you replace it.
Yes........I should explain having realised that the canvas is on wrong way round since purchase I now have to turn it inside out, and seeing as I sleep in the truck at shows I would like the inside that was outside to be clean'ish.
