  1. Know what you mean, in the past my off road exploits have meant the sudden demise of countless LR drive-line components, can't see any fun in it now, no way Forceful is going near water!
  2. Yes you can do it that way, remember that the grease cannot be drained out so if you intend to wade and water gets in past the worn seal the whole lot will need stripping to remove it, make sure your breather is clear to reduce suction when axle suddenly cools when plunged. In my experience the gaiters can trap water inside after wading, so causing rapid rusting of the ball surface and tearing of the seal, maybe best to leave them off. Apart from that the grease works a treat, I have had it in there for many years after mine started leaking, also use it in my Explorer steering box after I couldn't pull the drop arm to replace the seal.
  3. You may have just stumbled upon Andy's fantasy barn...must be getting pretty full now for all those to be outside!
  4. It passed over Eastbourne and low over my house 1.45 ish heading North west looked splendid in the sunshine!
  5. Great pix Clive, thanks. The Commander being Scammell and British was a source of pride and a tough act to follow, so it must be so hard being involved in producing such a great truck like that only to see the short sighted bean counters reject it after it performed so well. Such a missed opportunity!
  6. Usually available from many show traders and most dealers, expect to pay from £15 used to £75 NOS for the later halogen ones which are are a big improvement. Even new ones rust inside the mounting part very quickly, no paint there, I have made covers for mine to keep the rain out when not in use.
  7. Nice one [/url]bawtrylwt, welcome to walking beam world..
  8. The one I have does suffer from this effect, but it is not really a defect because it is sold as a reversing/parking camera, the fish eye lens gives a wide field of view and at reversing speeds is very good. You should soon get used to it, I find that I can now see I have a tail gater (obviously mesmerised by the gorgeous Cummins sound) not visible in the mirrors and can make allowances. Since fitting it I have amazed unsuspecting onlookers with my ability to back onto my trailer inch perfect fist time, worth every penny!
  9. So far I've had a blackbird nest on the starter, four robins nests in the chassis at the same time, one mate had his top hose off a wren promptly nested in the coffee pot, which sort of spoilt the season for him till they flew. Another mate (yep two!) had starlings nested in his Hyab, they ignored the movement and just kept feeding while he worked, not sure how the chicks hung on though! Don't worry about how long it takes as long as it don't hurt..

    Banisters

I sent them the part numbers and they took the trouble to rummage in the bins and managed to assemble a whole set of Explorer air brake and steering seals bar one, and cheap too. Highly recommended.
  11. Good stuff Nick, proper job, can't see that giving any more trouble.
  12. Newsflash! New sumo light guards withstands first test! Newsflash!
  13. Sorry Monty, I was talking about clockwork toys, no reference to your Saracen meant..:red: Yesterday I was talking to a chap who used Explorers to lift out Saracen engines in Malaya, in order to replace the seal in the fluid flywheel, which where affected by the extreme heat, and didn't last long at all. He said that was the only thing that ever went wrong with them out there, and reckoned they are brilliant vehicles. If that's any consolation.
  14. Brilliant, owner obviously prefers wind up toys rather than push and go ones!
  15. From when will camping be available on the site? We will be in the area all that week in our campervan so may pop in to see who is about and lend a hand if needed.
  16. Good steady progress, just what Pioneers like..
  17. Hand started my Explorer when it still had a petrol engine just once, never felt the need to do it again..
  18. Welcome Simon and Ellie, plenty to keep you both busy there! It amazes me how many keep turning up.
  19. Strange set up Mike, never noticed before but looking at these pics it does seem that only the rearmost wheels steered, or is that chap looking at it thinking "Summat's broke there"? Surely that would cause a lot of stress and wear, or is it more complicated than that and I am missing something? The steersman must have had backache, the steering wheel could have been made a bit higher for the poor chap! http://www.britishpathe.com/ImgRetrieve.php?img=60&media_urn=53599 http://www.britishpathe.com/ImgRetrieve.php?img=65&media_urn=53599 http://www.britishpathe.com/ImgRetrieve.php?img=45&media_urn=53599
