  1. Just to update this post, Hardy Spicer also worry about this problem too! http://www.hardyspicer.com.au/torsional_vibration_2006.asp But Grahams' is still going strong, another season behind it.
  2. Yes Tim, that Daimler one looks more like the radiator I remember I think the wooden part of the chassis had been renewed.
  3. In the sixties had to go to Birmingham to pick up a load of copper hot water cylinders, they were not all finished and so I sat watching them being made. The tops and bottoms where spun by a similar method, and a very big long wooden lever was used, the tops/bottoms were rolled on to the cylinder in another shop so I missed that bit, but the whole thing was very fast. Must be a very satisfying skill to have acquired Steve, and what a nice sunny workshop!
  4. I saw a lorry with a composite wood metal chassis like that being restored at Chatham Dockyard a few year ago. The owner was an unhappy man as he had to move it and a chain drive Scammell, as the museum wanted the space and he had nowhere to keep them. He had recast the radiator but I can't remember it looking like that one, did other makers use wood/metal chassis?
  5. I did the driving on front prop thing to diagnose mine and yes it proved it wasn't the rear prop! But trying to get back up the slope into the farmyard produced the best front tyre squeal ever heard around here! :-D They don't all do it, mine doesn't now, but I've done everything that can be done. I meant that high propshaft speed brings on the movement in the gbox mountings, possibly metal to metal contact, best of luck with it mate.
  6. Nick, there are two drain plugs on the transposing box, the one in the rear is higher than the front one, the level may appear to go down after the first run after re-filling. This is because some gets pumped up into the rear part and stays there, (yep, got me foxed as well). So top up again, there is a small filler plug on top of the speedo drive, a small amount of oil should be put in this. The small amount of oil relative to the size of the walking beams means that it is hard to drain much out, in your case because of the water immersion it has suffered it might be as well to rock the beams a bit to get any trapped water out. Perhaps a couple of changes with a good run in between, would be a good thing too. As a good student of HMVF you will know not to use EP oil! How's your clutch?
  7. Hi Richard, you have a nice collection of British vehicles there, welcome to the military vehicle forum!
  8. Chris, there are no taper bearings in a Scammell box to adjust, so it can't be that. My rebuilt gbox is all new except the output shaft which has some slight spline wear, I re-used the flange that was worn to match it, as fitting another one can lead to even more wear, although if you used the Locktite stuff that may well help stop it. My box runs perfectly smoothly now even with the spline wear, so I don't think that is the main cause of vibration as long as the nut stays tight. It is more likely that the gbox mountings are the source of your problems, it is strange that this always does happen in 5th and 6th gear, which points to propshaft speed and maybe some propshaft wear as well.
  9. As this event should be quite close to home Forceful and I where thinking of attending, he's a bit worried now!
  10. Nice to know it's sorted, did you find a seal & thermostat at W & P or were they modern parts?
  11. Moon and stars lined up at last, patience pays off in the end Nick, well worth the wait!:yay: What a good one to buy, almost indistinguishable from original yet more reliable, best of luck with HIM he'll be your friend for life I think! I will have a look in my shed tomorrow, I think there may be a clutch plate and cover in there somewhere, (don't hold your breath) I know I have a new wear plate for the flywheel should you need one.
  12. Mischievous devils, but it had to be done! Great story
  13. Did Vicarys have a constructor in their yard at one time Jules, seem to remember someone going to look at it.
  14. Spot John Bird's spanner there Andy? He is John Davis's mate, no prizes though
  15. The propshaft angles should reproduce that authentic Scammell vibration, he's got that bit right!
  16. That's a result then Andy, no rush for the spanner now then! Interesting the locating bolts weren't wired or had you already taken it off? I reckon I've seen that box spanner before, looks like a John Bird special from here.
  17. Great photos chaps, really captured the atmosphere between you, this is HMVF working so well for those who couldn't make it there!
  18. It's for cutting out leather army boot heels and piercing the thread/nail holes in one operation.
  19. Clive, just slide into Googlemail, like a nice warm bath.....................and relax. keep using your old email alongside until you get the hang of it all.
  20. All this made me have a look at my Freeserve emails via Thunderbird, not done that for ages. There were 2454 spams sitting there waiting to be waded through and sorted! The emails had all been read in Gmail and the spam never showed there. Good eh?
  21. Clive, you need to keep your old email account running as some banks and secure web sites won't accept any free accounts. To get mail from other accounts after you've installed Googlemail, click on settings top rh of screen and then click accounts then look for get mail from other accounts and follow instructions. you can set it to allow you to answer emails from the other account via Googlemail and the email will be sent as if it came from your other account and show that address on it. Labels are great as you can group mail form various senders or subjects into searchable labels, very useful.
  22. Google mail, I have used this for years, since the start when it was Gmail, never had more that a couple of spams, it's free and you never have to sort out what emails to keep as you get tons of storage. I even rout my old Freeserve email account through it, Freeserve gets loads of spam, when it comes to me through Gmail there is none! Works for me. Used Firefox from the start also, not viruses, ever.
  23. Jules and chums in France 2007 Can't see getting that much enthusiasm from the public over here somehow, Maybe it's the Scammell that does it! Paul, would you kindly put these vids on HMVFTV where they belong!
