  1. So if the full road traffic act is in force at shows that would mean overwidth vehicles can't be driven around there either! Don't tell Neil.
  2. Just about any decent diesel has more torque than the standard Land Rover offerings. Even the much vaunted petrol V8 torque is nearly eclipsed by the TDi. Gearbox and half shaft problems are not unknown with the standard engines.
  3. Construction and use. Now there's a minefield. I was informed by an ex copper some time ago that there isn't a single vehicle on the road that would fully comply with construction and use regulations. They are so complex that even the big manufactuers can't or don't comply with new cars. So what chance has an older vehicle got. On the plus side is that most coppers at the side of the road will not know the full regulations and unless you give him any other reason to look into them he probably won't be bothered. I think it's more probable an insurer would look to failure to comply with C&U to worm out of a payout than the police would to prosecute anyone.
  4. Too big, too heavy and too much torque for a Land Rover transmission. Also requires more cooling than you can get under a Range Rover bonnet so more likely overheating and head gasket problems. Not too bad in vehicles that were designed to have them in though.
  5. No starter was fitted as collected. Not having heard the vehicle run I thought it a good idea to turn the engine over by hand first of all. There is a starting dog fitted on the crank pully which lines up with the original hole in the front crossmember. The 101 Starting handle was just long enough to reach and engage with the starter dog. Unfortunately the winch rope made it a tight and awkward fit. Even with the decompression lever open I wasn't able to turn the engine over. I decided to fit the starter supplied with the vehicle and give that a go. Low and behold with a few sparks from temporary jump leads the engine truned over. First with decompressor open then whilst closed. Discovering the floor mounted starter button was seized put paid to any further progress for the day. Floor mounted button has been removed and freed off at home this evening ready for wiring in tomorrow.
  6. First job is to make it mobile under it's own power. A cummins Diesel has been fitted by previous owners but I've not yet heard it run. The engine is a very good fit in the original engine bay. Looks like it always belonged there.
  7. Hope not too many people are getting bored with Ward La France projects taking over the forum. Mine eventually got picked up today and delivered to it's temporary new home. First two pictures are in Wales. Last is in Lancashire. I can recommend the haulier TW Bowler of Marple for anyone in the North.
  8. Iceberg I think. Pity it wasn't done properly could've been excellent in the Llama and of course the Range Rover. Had to wait 20 years until BMW did the job to get a proper V8 diesel in the Rover Range.
  9. AFAIR a Pioneer SV2S is just under 10 tons. I think a 432 may be just over your 12 tons. Surely even at 24 tons load that still leaves 16 tons for Wagon and Trailer to get under 40 ton limit which should be acheivable. Not an expert on heavy haulage by any means so would bow to greater knowledge.
  10. Better option if buying a modern truck to do the job would be to go for a heavy rigid flat bed for now, with the option to add a trailer on later. That way in the future subject to funds and licensing you could transport two of your own vehicles, or yours and someone elses to share costs.
  11. Deisgned by the blind:- Can't beat a few good straight lines. Like all the best Military Vehicles. Ovlov is basically the same shape anyway. Driven by the deaf:- Don't you mean deformed! to fit behind the wheel and pedals and still manage to change gear. What a way to go deaf though the roar of that V8. Don't get that in the Volvo. The military should have stuck with buying British and supporting the ailing British motor industry. Much good that it did.
  12. Back loads are the way to go for discount transport. As you say Madrat may have a problem with were he lives, but there's no real time constraints for getting it to and from events. Maybe a few stopovers, using different hauliers could work out. Awkward to arrange I know but could save a few bob.
  13. £2-3k You could swim the Stolly to Kent for that! (If you erect a Sail for a bit of Eco assistance, and only run the engines for bilge pumping) Or ask Cat Weasel if he's any room on deck next time he's passing on the Round Britain race!
  14. Surely the Pioneer will be upto pulling a decent trailer when completed! I know it's not going to be the thing for a 900 mile trip but I'd be using it were possible. It'll must be your cheapest way of getting two vehicles to most places. Can't see any means of transporting three vehicles at once unless on an over length low loader, STGO again will require a movement order and cost a fortune. Isn't the Pioneer (8ft 5" I think) awfully close to this maximum width limit? What is the figure exactly? Bit concerned about the Ward now at 8ft 4" I think.

  17. You might just find they want to borrow it! Next bit of crowd control they need doing.
  18. In the second picture that head looks remarkably clean! Is that before or after? Doesn't even look like it's had oil round the valve springs. Can't you swing a handy boom across from an adjacent vessels mast to assist in lifting heavy item's out of your hatch? Whilst the owners are away of course :whistle:

  20. This very nice restoration at Cark definately used roundheaded screws, not cheese or pan head.
  21. I suppose the simple one of a valve stuck open would be too much to ask for? The fact that you were asking for a piston and liner in another post leads me to suspect it's a lot more serious!
  22. I wasn't looking forward to plumbing the Air brakes up on the Ward but I feel a whole lot better now I've seen that!!! What a difference a few years makes to vehicle technology. Makes you wonder how they coped in the field in service. Surely a simpler system would have been better?
  23. That radiator position must at least keep the drivers knees warm, if nothing else!
  24. Is it me or is she looking better now than before the accident? Is the insurance not covering the full cost? or you having extra work done whilst it's in there? Must be one of the best looking stolly's I've seen. Most seem a bit untidy now. Mind you I've probably been looking at the rougher and cheaper ones for sale.
  25. I was amazed at the number of explorers also. Add in a severalPioneers, a couple of constructors and a few others and it was like a Scammell owners gathering. Anyone have an idea how many Explorers are known to survive? I imagine a fair percentage of them must have been at the Steam fair.
