  1. During the 1939-45 desert war the germans sent most of thier vehicles in the continental grey (also a lot of their troop wore uniform items of the same colour). When permissable vehicles were resprayed but many just accumulated dust and sand for the camo effect.

This was also true for captured vehicles.

  2. Hi all -

Have purchased a number of reproduction items from a well known source.

I would like to "weather" their appearance so they don't look all new and shiny -

  3. You will note from the film that very few ( if any ) of the German troops are wearing steel helmets but are wearing the `scratcher caps` or a few are wearing the Picklehaulb.

This is because the first German helmets were not issued to troops until 1916, they were supposed to be issued for this battle but not enough helmets were available at the time.

  4. I had a chuckle on hearing about the village of Sh1tterton in Dorset, quite often when residents give their address on the phone people hang up thinking its a prank call.

  8. Davy, any idea why, in the last of those archive pics which is obviously a parade of some sort, the trailer is carrying a railway goods wagon?

Must be something to do with the military railways as run by the Royal Engineers (replicated cap badge on radiator)

I think the placard on the side of the truck say`s Royal Engineers Transport...?

  10. Hi all,

there is a lot of controversy regarding these badges including these made by Seilier (sp) & comp. of Geldern...M1/129 and this maker is one of the most copied by the Chinese.

They are apparently commemoration badges the originals were made be for 1933 (but with out dates) and reissued (sold) to aid party funds in approx 1935 so a person could show allegiance from the beginning of the party.

As you can see not a brilliantly made badge by any means, but these along with other artifacts of German Third Reich history can become a fascinating and complex area to research, wehrmacht-awards.com for further research.

  11. Don't know much about southern breeds, looks to me like at least two different types there. Some of 'em look abit like Dorset Downs, don't know about mules, weren't they a post war cross?

There is at least two differnt types here the black faced ones (unless it is camo paint or natural shadows) appear to be Dorset Down sheep .....

    sheep....HMV`s what next ???

Its for my Father who will be joining us in Normandy this year (he is not a veteran, just wants to come along) He has placed an order with SoF but they are out of stock, dont suppose anyone has these lying around waiting to be bought? Or is there another company he could try?

    Thanks in advance

    Rosie Cubed!
