    Enigma,

i am checking the pistachio index in the F.T daily but prices have really risen lately due to the high consumption in the Netherlands

  3. . They did not have a GMC or a jeep

Vorsprung Durch Technic...as they say in Southend.

I wouldn`t agree with this really as they had the volkswagen type 82(though only a two wheel drive 1300cc engined) vehicle and also the Opel (Blitz/ maultier) which i belive was the base vehicle for many more roles than the GMC...JUST MY THOUGHTS.

  4. OK one says fuel and onother says logistics, but what if they had both of these in place, would they have succeded in what they were doing ?

The trouble is after the failed attack on Russia where the German forces litrally bled to death on a massive scale they lost the will to fight really and with the inclusion of many forign troops in the forces the few fanatical die hards 1943 onwards would not be enough for final victory.

  5. Hi Clive,

for a vehicle though not large and the trailer is probaly capable of carrying the weight, hard to explain...there is a lot of mass (side of vehicle) at a fairly high point above the center of gravity of the trailer which i think heightened the `snaking` feeling/activity maybe a trailer with wheels on the outside would give you more stability or refrain from overtaking :-D

  6. If you goto the DISG web site there is some super film clips of the vehicles on various rally`s both land and waterborne.

There is rather excellent footage of approx 10 schwimmers on water on the Weser canal if i remember correctly

  7. Hi!

I'm sure there is someone on here with an encyclopedic knowledge that can help me out.

My jeep has currently got the biggest, ugliest white plastic battery that is now knackered. It's so big it sits between the front seats!

I'm trying to find the spec (Ah - Cold Cranking etc.) for a new black one, the right size that will fit in its original location.

Can anyone help - and where would you recommend to go?

    Thanks!

    Gerry

Try a pm to Miss Jeep of the forum as i know her husband has just brought a fairly accurate battery for his jeep from somewhere.

  8. Ever since I was a kid building Airfix models, I always had a tendency to wards the German kit, always thought it was better quality, build and looking, but was it the same in real life in those times, I believe it was and still do I think the machines gave off a sense of quality, a build that was meant to carry out what the designers set out in their objective/scope.

This is the real humdinger.......if the allies did not have the overpowering mass of equipment, would they have overcome the superior stuff that they were facing.

    Opinions please gentleman and ladies

As far as i understand German equipment (vehicles) were very "over engineered" and complex in their design, it is also known (as found at the Falaise gap) they still relied an large resources of horse drawn equipment wagons, artillery pieces etc .

But as history has shown i believe they would have still been defeated due to the lack of..............fuel resources as befell the panzers etc at Normandy.

  9. Weren't they in the old 10 man packs???

We used to get them direct from the cook house some times by fair means and some times by foul means.

We used to in those days climb in to centurions/trucks/land rovers parked in Bhurphore ? barracks and remove all sundry of items including one day lots of (read several go-cart loads) of compo rations which fed the family for several months :shake: and i still have memories of one year when dad returned from East Africa to find the coal shed full with box`s of rations which he buried in the back garden one night due to a M.Q. inspection which was imminent

    Happy days

  10. Interestingly, they pulled Cheese Possessed from about two years-worth of every GP rat pack menu a few years back - looks like Primula (the then supplier) must have stuffed up the packaging or something, as I was led to believe that it went well off in normal storage :(

I can remember when the cheese and other delights to include Jam, Margerine and Orange/Lemonade powder came in 10lb tins:shake: also on one ocaision geting a whole box if tinned Oatmeal blocks :coffee::coffee:

  11. Well as mentioned be for i always had an interest in modern German Military history (1900 -1945) once being a collector of anything and every thing.

A lot of subsections of the hobby have been dropped as prices rose and i sold my cloth badge collection to purchase the jeep, but have still kept the interest alive through helmets(now too expensive and well faked but i have kept them all) and Iron crosses just managing to hang in there with these.

  12. When Im not running the business...

I spend a lot of my time analysing these things. A type of Roman pottery from Gaul called Samian made between 1st century and 3rd century. Most of the stuff I get to look at is in bits, and incredibly small bits at that. I weigh, identify who made them and where they come from. Then compile a report. Mrs W thinks Im barmy-crackers but it beats watching mush on the TV.

  13. One of my fathers many collections of Simpson barracks was (supposedly) that some of the lower ranks being placed in to tin baths on the parade square and then hosed and scrubbed by thier barrack room mates to persuade them to be more hygenic in thier approach to life ?

But there again this could be any barracks

  14. They used to have a museum at Simpson Barracks near Northampton if it is still running /

I believe i am correct that a Sergent in the RPC is the only rank in the British army allowed to wear a "full set " (mustache and beard)

sorry just done a search to find that the barracks no longer exsist
