I managed to source a 1940 dated set of spoon, fork AND knife!!
Was very pleased with that.
Missing a WD toothbrush and comb (no bald jokes please).
Where there WD marked and dated toothbrush and comb?
I can remember on our first family camping holiday (1971), my late father being QM(tech) kitted us all out with the 1945 dated KFS sets, sleeping bags, blankets, poncho`s, towels and we lived off compo rations most of the fortnight ! Happy Days Happy Days

Hello Ash, not sure if they do WW2 battle dress my size mate. All the pie's are starting to take it's toll on the old waistline mate. Well that was the first words Snapper said when I meet him back last month
Tell me about it Tony........for us who support the "fuller figure" it may be a case of paying up for repro gear "cough cough"

On the mess tin front. go modern, they look the same but are SAFE to EAT OUT OF.
Asnley, re the black web fittings, for the most part you are correct,....there was some webbing fitted with what was called sheradized steel, which was sometimes coated/painted black.
For webbing info have a look at British Web Equipment of two world wars, by Martin Brayley.
All the best,
Andy
Always handy to know...may be at Beltring could you bring down an example if you have one to compare.

what personal effects are you looking for Ashley ?presumably you mean washing and shaving kit etc ,if this is so try sabre sales in Southsea they have razors, shaving brushes soap tins wash rolls, mess tins ,water bottles etc although it is dependant on what period things you are looking for as some may not be wartime dated and soap dishes although usually 44/45 dated were apparently rarely issued until after the war .One other strange point to note is that although war time dated forks and spoons are relatively cheap and easy to find war time knives seem to be vitually non existent and therefore pricey
Nigel
ps how do I know this ? I collected 2 full sets for use in Normandy this year
Hi NIGEL,
i have most items but the knife and fork are very elusive as is the jumper that was carried in the pack. I have a housrwife (but tatty) and most of the washroll contents,so the search goes on.

Hello Jack, have you got anything set-up in the way of photography yet? I'm 100% sure the Plain Military guys would be more than happy to fill this part if you need us. If you are happy with this could someone tell me where we can get some WW2 British or American uniforms from please? never dressed up as a WW2 combat photographer before.
All the best.
Tony
Go on Tony........get out the battledress and hobnails :-D

Yes, your right.
The quick pull kinda fastener puches are sometimes dated 1944 but weren't used at the front before the end of the war.
If they were then very sparsely.
Also i belive (i could be wrong)that all war time bits if webbing had Brass buckles as apposed to the post war black metal types.
Some of this stuff can be cheap on e-bay and at Beltring if you are prepared to hunt around, one of the diffulculties is trying to find the personal contents of the small pack which i am trying to complete at present.

Hi Jules,
these ithink are regimental markings i.e 2 nd seaforth highlander regt. weapon number 942,
3rd yorks and lanc`s weapon no 448
(other regiments are available with these abreviations)
i do have a booklet on bayonet markings somewhere !!!!!

Hi,
i use a vauxhall frontera to tow mine on a trailer, i use one from the Brian James range which i brought second hand but they are not cheap hobbies but are a godsend over long (and short)distances.
I have always worked on the jeep being about a 1000 kilos and the trailer is 500 kilos so it should be ........... 1500 KG
permisable towing rate =
which would be the max weight for some 4x4 `s on the market, which exceeds the 85% rule.
you must check the data plate (or check on line)for the relevant info.
Best of luck

OH ye of little faith, the ones i have normally seen are silver in colour with the trade mark painted in red, this being subdued must be an origonal "combat" version.................................possibly a barn find.

.. when you remember the "pig swill man" coming to your school to collect the leftovers from school dinner....
Judging by some of the meals we had he must of delivered them to our school !

I am certain the British army used at least one Panther (named Cuckoo) during the hostilities, or directly after.
As a side note the British also captured a partially completed Maus (E100= 100 ton monster tank) but as far as i know the only complete example is in Russia (or what was ! )

Hi all,
for years faking was prevalent in the German militaria market (to include helmets on a vast scale  ) but over the last 15 or so years has caused many a headache in the allied area of militaria.
But as stated many still buy these items with no knowledge on the subject and these days research, visual and handling of known genuine items (difficult i know) is a definite must and with certain types of militaria a keen sense of smell !.....you cant fake 60 year old smell.
One way to detect early re-pro painted helmets was to sniff the paint for freshness) got me plenty of funny looks :cool2: but often saved me pennies for genuine items.
