letting the public actually walk THROUGH their trenches and interact with them. I've not seem many people chatting to people dressed as German soldiers when they are hidden in a trench behind mounds of earth and sand bags. Once again its no surprise they look bored and even less approachable QUOTE]

Acouple of years ago i visited old Sarum near Salisbury where English Heritage were through living history showing the lifr of both sides in the 1st world war, and they had a superb tour of the German trench with a guide and the visit ended in a section of trench where the types of uniform, weapons, ration etc were used.

The day also had displys of Lewis gunners and a mock dogfight by aircraft of both nations brilliant day out.

  3. As stated befor i was taken to court by the local council (who i work for) for leaving my transit camper in a rear side road for 4-5 days at a time only because the old fart who complainedsome times phoned up up to 4 times a day non stop for about a year.

i had to promise not to parkthe van in that spot for 6 months, so parked it in my garden for precisly 6 month to the day befor parking there again.

Luckily i had a friedd who owned a breakers yard and would lend me the odd leagle road vehicle to park there from time to time :-D

  5. Yeah UV light... older patches don't glow under UV light whereas the threads and materials in modern ones do (by no means definitive but a good starting point)

    ;)

Remember that if washed in modern detergent/ powders it may also glow white in UV light.

  6. Oh dear. The bloke with the MP40 walking in front of the PkKpfw4 ...

,but he has a helmet carrying decals on the side, when every German combat soldier and particularly Waffen SS, by this time in the war had long since painted the helmet and while wet rolled it in sand to give it a severe Matt finish (thereby painting out the helmet decals).

    Sorry ... must ... get ... pedant ... hat ... off ... head.

    Dear Alien,

i tend to disagree with the above :nono: due to the esprit Du corps as found in the SS ,even late in the war many troopers kept the insignia on their helmets as a matter of pride, and later in the war as many troops camouflaged their helmets to include cloth covers.

the example shown is an M42 (M43 to the British), liner dated 1944 but with the early pattern runes? German efficiency

  7. Hi all,

managed to attend on the Saturday really enjoyed the show congratulation to the organisers.

Cheers Dave for the cup `o` char and the bickies, but sadi missed out on the cake

The only other military connection of the W/E was finding a spent .50? cal shell half buried in a rabbit hole one morning whilst walking the dog.

When i woke up the wife to tell of my find she didn`t seem to pleased

the shell is marked T G 1943 and i am sure the inert ammo buffs will name the maker.

I did find another item on the beach but have not I.D. it yet will try to this W/E

  10. The fun and friendships totally outweigh the downsides!

    :coffee:

This is the main reason i attend the show. To see people who i may only see once /or maybe twice a year and i must admitt this year i didn`t get to see some of those at all, but there again made new aquaintances which i am sure will be a life long path to follow and enjoy.
