  1. I would think :pfrt: a more appropriate response......

Though most types of German militaria are most collectable from buttons to vehicles, headgear has a major following and crusher caps are much sought after along with the panzer beret shown earlier in the film clip two very unique items of headgear worn by german forces.

  2. There were some very nice German vehicles in there 8- Rads, a Puma at speed :drive::wow: armoured 1/2 tracks with neblewerfers(wheres that drooling smilie) as stated some of the 8-rads were quite early in the war as the crews are still wearing the Panzer beret, and as for that ss crusher cap...i am off to lie down:bow:

  3. i can't remember now but I think it was during the first world war someone came up with the idea that you can join up together and fight together. At the time it was thought a good idea, mates together etc.... the problem was, and this is why I think it was ww1 was that the entire menfolk from a village could be wiped out in one battle,

    Lest we forget

These were known as Pals battalions i.e the Salford Pals (as basically they all knew one another wether they were neighbours/ workmates/brassband members/sunday leauge footballers etc etc) and as stated entire familys/streets/villages were decimated of menfolk, if i remember one family lost 10 immediately related menfolk during WW1

Soon after during the pre/2 World War period and afterwards local regiments never re-cruited in thier particular counties and as far as i know this is still the norm ?

  5. Ah yes how to have an MV and not have to worry about fuel costs and all other ancillary costs.

As they state in the clip they have been used all over the world and some have long service records.

Quite interesting and no doubt easily forgotten for the more glamorous motorised form.

Out of interest has anybody actually got an ex-military push bike?

    Mike

I am sure that there were a lot of these at Beltring for sale the last few years.

  7. Hi Ashley, the Disposals Unit dealt with all unserviceable materials, for I presume, disposal onto the German market. It was certainly a very busy place when I was there. Canadian troops used the facility along with us, the stuff came in from all over W. Germany............ We even had a group of Yanky troops one day, they obviously could not find the place and drove their bus into our camp (Full sized bus) One of the U.S. troops got off the bus and approached our group, who were on parade, and unusually our C.O. was imparting some information to us..... cant remember the content. The U.S. soldier just walked up to our group and asked the C.O. for directions. The C.O. gave the directions, and then in typical british fashion, took one step back, coming to attention, he then saluted the yank, and said, I just think that someone should salute someone. The yank just turned on his heels and left without saluting....... leaving our C.O. looking rather disgusted.

    Regards Ray.

I can tell you during one term we were over there every weekend.................helmets, clocks, machetes, bayonetts, pliers, hammers, all assortment of tools, BD`s ammo boots webbing by the skip load, and the occasional vehicle the wierdest i saw and never appreciated what they were bedfords with the bodys raised up on stiltsbut it was dangerous as one time i collected packs of biscuit which i traded with our cadet force as survival biscuits...... shame they were condemmed dog biscuits (with out outer wrappers) sick bay was very busy for the next few days and i ended up with the cane

  8. The block i was in was the third one along fronm the main gate which was bombed during the was and was haunted by the ghost Peg leg, but thats another story.

Shame the place is pratically demolished to allow the building of a new fire station, ad also a BMW and Mini garage:mad:

The girls school is still stading as is the MSO camp but what was the disposal camp between WBS and WGS

    is long gone.

If you get on to the BAOR site you can copy across all the known British bases o to Google earth 90% of which are now closed down

  9. Thanks for all the replys , I'm sure my M38a1 will be just fine , it just seems that despite being much cheaper than any other Jeep they don't seem to be anything like as popular as the MB's and Hotchkiss Jeeps ,its not like they are hard to find , agree they don't have the classic Jeep look and getting good repro parts is harder but you can get two for the price of one !!! .

Going to annoy loads of the purist's because even though it was a Dutch Neekaf its going to be getting the American treatment due mainly to the fact everyone else I know has American vehicles , and finding any meaningful history of its Dutch service is nearly impossible so any unit markings would only be a guess.

Mind you hrs of trawling the tinternet have not exactly produced tens of pics of M38a1's in any Mil service.

Hi and welcome to the forum,

wether or not you go American is up to you have chat to see if the Dutch guys on here can help.

  10. Yes, I've been there three times and am booked in again this year. It's a good show, with free entry to the museum, but they are very funny about civvy tents at this show. You will need to cover it for sure at this one. It's also going to be this years AGM for the MVT.

    M

HHmmmm it used to be "green camping" on the show site and civilian camping in the field at the rear of the site (but very nice site and facilities too deffo 4*) but i see this year they are charging a fee of £10:00 for civilian camping could this be for non - green camping facilities ??

  11. When i first brought home Christina i had told her about my collection of German militaria but i think she expected an old box with a few badges in like the residents of the nursing home where she worked.

Only to be shocked by a display of (at that time) 100 bit sof headgear on shelves above the picture rail and frames of badges on the wall also the odd picture and print, but once her eyes nearly fell out of her head as she worked untill 10 pm at night and on comming home the lounge had a bout 10 fully grown men? (all collectors ) watching Cross of Iron wearing a german helmet each and badges, field gear etc for some reason she just said Hiya and went to bed only to question me in the morning

Though it doesn`t bother her the militaria is not on general display and when available is kept in a locked room.

I would advice you to make an stop there, if you have the opportunity

In it's kinds it is the biggest collection of military vehicle's in Europe

Most of the military museums have an lot of AFV and an limited number of other military vehicle's or equipment

At Overloon it is the complete opposite

I have some more picture's of the M26's there, so if some one is looking for an certain view let me know

Perhaps I can help, I have also picture's of the Hall-Scott 440 engine

How ever I do not have picture of the inside of the cabin, they are not accesible :-(

  15. Strange, especially considering the German marking is still there.

    Just quickly....

There appears to be some writing next to the star ?? possibly soldier art or unit emblem, also it would appear that the soldier third from left still has the tri-colour on his helmet which should of (officially) been removed in April 1940 the theatre is hard to detirmine and more study is required.

  16. At the last Beltring whilst helping a friend on a stall got into conversation re a flak 88 bit of equiptment on the stall a most unassuming type of chap who wore a sweatshirt with a motif of the Bruce Crompton collection.

As we talked it transpired to be Bruce himself the owner of the collection. Chatty guy, very pleasant , had time to talk a really nice down to earth guy:thumbsup:

  17. The vehicle came from Shrivenham near Swindon.

Going back a few years now they were going to have an open day at Shrivenham to raise funds for the restoration of this tank (bearing in mind the the area was not normally open to the public) but on arrival myself and quite a few others were refused entry to the camp due to an alert " condition red" the fee of £3:00 had to be paid in advance but of course when i wrote to the organisers of this event they could not return the monies but would of course notify all persons when they would hold the event in the future...nothing heard of course
