  1. It is a conversion of an AMX13 with the turret of an M24 Chaffe tank- the french built a batch in the late 1950s. Odd though the Antar is British and the background looks similar the RMCS Shrivenham

Quite coincidental this post, I am moving an AMX 13 on Saturday, I used to own an ANTAR MK3 and I used to own a Rubery owen 10 ton trailer which had been uprated to 15 ton capacity !

  2. The 10 ton Light recovery Rubery Own is a very unusual sight behind an Antar. You would expect it to be behind a Martian or A Militant.

It also must be completely overloaded , Standard AMX is 15 Tonnes, The DCA version was 17.2 Tonnes, I Guess this one is somewhere in the middle but that trailer is a 10 ton Capacity Trailer, capable of taking max 12 Tonnes.

Some of these trailers were uprated to 15 tonne capacity with the addition of some strengthening gussets and additional plating so they could carry 432s.

  3. Nice M578, never seen one of those beasties in the flesh. Is there many of these about??

    Tony

No I don't think so, took it to Beltring last year and it was the first time one had been shown there. The REME museum at Bordon have one in the reserve collection, but it has not run for some while. There are a few in Denmark, one which is in private hands.

  4. Hi Fugly.

If You still have no luck send me a PM or write here. as I use to work for Alvis and still have some

contacts there at BAE. I may be able to get you a email different to the one on the site.

I think there is a bit of confusion here, Alvis F V Society is nothing actually to do with ALVIS the company.

  5. Well Johnny.... Ill be damed..... yes, this is the exact same transporter we have and it looks real original. I will try and contact the owner to get more details. Thanks a million. The trailer for sale is in the South island of new Zealand, I live in the North, but no problems..... will keep you informed.

    Cheers and happy easter Kevin

Hi Kevin are you related to the famous house movers Watkins ?

  6. Hi all,

I've just brought a Meadows 630 PJ engine. It was a stand-by engine for a generator in a printing works and was brought by them at auction in the 70's. It has a few differences from a nomal 630 PC engine that i can see, these being:

diffent oil filters, cab gas adapters, fluid flywheel and governor settings - as it is set to start and run at 1800.

All of the above are painted in egg shell blue/green, as brought from auction. This engine was brand new, as there is no rebuild plate. It has done 213 hours, on starting it runs and revs without the nomal Meadows cough.

My question is this what did the MoD use a 6 cylinder petrol engine with fluid fly wheel in, and are there any other internal differences compared with a 630 PC engine ?

The fluid flywheel bit is a little confusing as this will have "slip" when coupled to a generator. 1800 rpm would suggest a 60 cycle output (USA). I have never seen a big generator that was not direct drive at 1500/1800 rpm.

ARE YOU SURE THAT IS WAS NOT FOR A COMPRESSOR OR A PUMP ?

  7. What is it like to drive on the road with a diesel engine fitted? Everyone keeps telling me they are just too slow and not much fun on a long run. Really like the recovery version but was put off by all the Quicker to walk stories:cry: One guy even said his explorer was a greyhound compared to his 680 diesel leyland.

I had a recovery version with a Perkins 540 v8 in it (2800 rpm) and a spicer overdrive gearbox. Flat out it would do 35mph but getting it flat out took about 5 minutes on a level road ! I once suspend towed an Explorer from Leyland, Lancashire to Stockport (fortunatly on a Sunday) on every incline we were down to about 5mph. We were really lucky not to be pulled up.

  8. Here are a few more - I've posted some video footage on You Tube as well. The plate is 52BM13. I've a back copy issue 23 of Wheels &Tracks magazine with a 9 page feature on the Martian. It seems to say the LWB version is a rare beast.

LWB and long nose by the looks of it ! what engine is fitted ?

  9. it has been refitted with 22.5 supersize radials...so unless i go back to the old wheels which i dont have I am stuck with these. I know they are a modern tyre but it means they are a commercial tyre and they cost big time...likely it will cost me 600 quid a tyre for new ones.. need to get some cheaper than that if i can...

OK they are 22.5 rims but what width / aspect ratio tyres are on them ?

  10. Does the CET share any parts with any other AFV or is it one on its own?

No all the parts are completely unique. The engine is classified as a Rolls Royce C6T but it is the same core as an Eagle out of a Scammell Crusader or RAF S26 Tractor except that it develops 330 bhp instead of 305 bhp. The turbo is side mounted and I think a little bigger than a Crusader rear mounted one. The pump seems to be opened up a bit hence the plume of black smoke when you open the throttle quickly.

    John.

  11. This is Fazakerley Engineering Liverpool. Tha Antar Rework Programme. The skinny Ginger in the back ground is me. It was taken by, I think, some 16 tank users on a visit 1975-7 with a officer called Tibble.

When I had an Antar (12DM60) it had a plate in the cab saying FEC SPECIAL REBUILD 1980.

  12. Full wrecker with the original petrol engine but have my eyes on a diesel engine for her...maybe in the future...she wont do many miles and in about 3 months I will have finished buying toys for ever....(and if you believe that then...well don't)

She will get a tidy up respray and all bits sorted, need a new set of tyres for her and so am on the lookout for them...maybe a set of michelins or something similar...and I have to have the whole thing checked for function and operation...

Other things I know it needs are a master cylinder for a rear wheel, anyone got one or know where I can get one AND the PTO shaft for the front winch...

What size and tyres do you want I may have a set for you.

  13. Hello everyone!

I have had some progress over the past few months.

I had successfully fitted a coach heater blower motor, I put air through 2 pipes down to the 2 mags thus putting a steady flow of cold air to each magneto.

I took it out this Sunday just gone and it ran wonderfully. I covered about 20 miles without a beat so I was very, very happy!

I am now looking for a spare engine, it's the meteorite petrol engine. Does anybody own a manual for this or know where I can get one?

I want to say a massive thank you to everyone here who has been helping me and giving me their ideas, THANK YOU SO MUCH !

And finally... Does anybody know where there are currently any antar's for sale anywhere?

    Thanks again !

    Evening Kev,

It is John Riley who you met at Saddleworth Wartime weekend. If you get in touch with Melvyn at Heywood, Manchester (I gave you his number when we were at Malvern) he has all my Antar manuals on loan at the moment. You too are welcome to have loan of them for copying ect, just let me know what you borrow. Mel is retired so is about most of the time, you should go and visit him he has 2 Antars a Centurion and a Dyson trailer. If you have lost his number give me a call.

    John.

  14. John - why do you run your trailer on single tyres? It doesn't look as if the twins stick out wider than the trailer on the Overloon museum example.....:undecided:

    Regards,

    Tony

Just to add the actual dimensions. The trailer bed is 10' wide exactly. With the twin wheels fitted overall width is 11'6", therefore the tyres are exposed by 9" each side. As I have never carried anything heavier that the CET at 18 tonnes this is well within the rating of the single tyres.

With the twin wheels on although the trailer is outside C&U Regulations I'm sure the uncovered tyres would be frowned upon by the Police or VOSA so my plan is to use some very heavy old conveyor belting (3/4" thick) to make a cover for the tyres where they are exposed. This way if the tyres come close to anything when manovering the arches will flex a little.

  15. Youre truck had only 538 miles :wow:

That is from the factory to the storage depot, from depot to the re-seller and then to you

Just out of curiosity, hoe long did it take to put 538 miles on the clock ??

So the date/year of manufacturing untill you bought it, how many years??

    MichelK

Manufacture in Elmira Heights, New York in 1976. I bought it in Derby, England 20 September2002. 26 years !!! Most of them had only storage mileage when sold.
