  1. They have swapped the Challenger Recovery Vehicles over to Challenger 2 track, so that's probably why there is some surplus around.

Track pads do officially have a shelf life, so they could just be out of date ?

  2. Does anyone out there know the chassis numbers for the RAF constructors? Thankyou for your help.

  3. Hi Adrain

Thanks for your post, I am looking to move the DT and trailer next week again from its temp storage so I might try and get some footage of the smoke screen and you can let me know what you think

    Cheers

    Steve

P.S. thanks to JOHN for the post, I looked for you at Smallwood today but you must have been out walking

We came home last night, thought you were going on Sunday not Monday ?

  4. Hi Grumpy,

Thanks for the info, I take it that this equally applies to Saracens and Saladins.

One Saracen manual actually states that one inflates and removes the wheels, accurately measure each one's circumference and then match the closest measurements. Now I have just been wondering, one side will have the "large" tires and on the other side, the "small" tyres. Surely that could cause hassles as well?

    Regards.

    Monty.

No because there is a differential between the sides, limited slip on a Stalwart, if there was no diff the thing would only want to go in a straight line !

  5. Hi There, Can anyone answer a question for me. I took the 981 for a run today and whilst it runs fairly clean by itself, I had a trailer on the back today moving it to temp accomodation and when going up hill or putting the engine under load, it was blowing black smoke.

is it over fuelling?? and if so, how do you adjust it

    Thanks

    Steve

Not a clue, but you deserve at least 1 reply

    John.

  6. I guess the only thing I can say is how did our friend Antar come by it in the first place?

About time too... I actually thought that question would be the first reply to this thread !

Many years ago a number of people some of whoom are now active members on this forum obtained permission to take parts off this gate guardian to support the restoration of the Churchill AVRE which is at the Tank Museum Bovington. As my Antar at the time resided in the yard of one of these people and I had an estate car towbar and trailer I volenteered to provide transport to Castlemartin on the day. A number of parts were removed from inside the engine bay and inside the fighting compartment, I think some of the engine deck was also removed and replaced with Plywood as well. Whilst inside I noticed that someone had previously attempted the removal of said plate with hammer and chisel(hence corner missing) probably because it is made of brass. Having the correct size of spanner in my box I removed the plate and have looked after it for at least the past 21 years in a drawer in my garage.

Whilst looking for somthing in the drawer last week I came across it and remembered where it came from, and as per my post would be happy to return it if the tank is now in preservation. If the tank no longer exists I will have it mounted and used as an anually presented club trophy for best armoured vehicle or most rallied armoured vehicle from the Manchester Branch of the MVT.

    Anybody any objections ?

  7. I visited Sindorf Trading the week before last to look at the M746's they have. There are now 10 in total as they have purchased the one from Armycars which was advertised on Milweb a few weeks ago.

There are 4 completely restored ones, 5 restorable ones plus one which would be very difficult to restore. They also have 2 M747 Trailers one of which came from Armycars.

    Here are some photos

The Sindorf brothers also have an amazing collection of softskin and armoured vehicles which are in excelent condition.

  8. To answer how I came by them is a bizzare tale that would make Disney proud! Especially when you twig on to the fact that I live in Canada.

Let it be said that I have known about these parts for a number of years and have finally worked out an agreement with the person who had them to help him de-junk his life and put these parts in the public domain where someone who might need them can find them.

The obvious issue is the cost of postage.

  9. hi john

thanks for the offer of transportation, i had a mental picture of my little carrier all on its own on the back of your het rig :D now that would be a definition of overkill

I was thinking more along the lines of one of Robert Walkers Brimec's or stepframes.

  10. I forgot to say, between the Dutch Army, and the present owner, this truck was run in artic form by Baldwins, moving cranes in Scotland.

It differs from the actual Magnaload FTF it represents, in as much as this one has Mack, non epicyclic axles, and Magnaload ran on Kirkstall epicyclic axles.

You forgot to mention it has a Detroit Diesel 2 stroke (non turbo) v12 engine.

  11. hi fella's

using my almost legendary mastery of technology i figured out a way to change the format of my carrier pictures so they would upload onto the forum :- i got the other half to do it :D

more pics on other posts, 12 in total

Should you need any help with transportation once you get it back let me know, I also can recommend a very good local sandblaster in Marple. (Where I had the M578 done)

  12. Hello all,

I am at the stage of painting my ex MOD 110, I sprayed it with..... Beckers PT NATO GREEN IRR 2PK P/U,

I added a bit of the accelerator stuff I got with it, but after about 2 months a lot of the paint is cracking and lifting off.

I was wondering if anyone knew what the cause of this might be?.

I think it could have had something to do with the mix of the paint and the accelerator stuff?, but I have never dealt with paint before in my life so don't really know. I have tried in vain to get the correct mix ratios for this paint from beckers but they wont reply to my emails.

I have managed to get another tin of this stuff, along with a tin of the grey primer, and really dont want to mess it up this time.

    Any help?, Please.

    Thanks,

    Chris.

I could post pics of the affected areas if it would help.

Is the paint surplus and is it within its shelf life, 2 pack deteriorates quicker than other paints.

  13. Thanks for the calification Richard. Actually I thought the thread refered to the JCB (earthmover) plant at Leeke Lane Staffs, but the posting refering to Rochester threw me- there was a JCB facility at or around Rochester but is now an indusrial estate.

    Steve

The JCB "facility" at Rochester Kent was actually a dealer branch belonging to Greenshields JCB, it has now moved to Wrotham, Kent.

  14. Width for the tractor is 2.59m, trailer is 2.89m with inriggers, 3.47m with outriggers so wider than an LGV and not conforming to C&U regs. They run under STGO cat 3 with civilian drivers.

Although the older artic trailers were lower and more stable they suffered from tyre problems and often were followed by a Land Rover to spot overheated or punctured tyres.

Ok I stand corrected. Should I ever be given the choice of driving either outfit fully laden I would still jump into the Scammell.

  15. OK guys lets sort this one out. The Churchill at JCB Rocester (Staffordshire) bellonged to Mark Bamford second son of Joseph Cyril Bamford the founder of JCB. This was part of a collection of a number of other "Tanks" which Mark/JCB owned.

I believe (but cannot confirm) that a quantity of these tanks were cut up on the JCB Estate. When Mark Walker of Walker Machinery in Whitney, Oxfordshire ( a friend of Mark Bamford) found out that some of the tanks had been cut he bought the Churchill from Mark Bamford. It did stand in their yard in Whitney for quite a while what its subsequent fate was I am not sure. Mark Walker is into preservation, owning the Swiss Army Rotinoff which regularly attends Great Dorset Steam Fair so if someone were to give him a call I am sure he will enlighten.

I am quite sure that there are no more tanks at JCB now as I work there.

With regards to the Sheffield Churchill it is just a co-incedence that the JCB Dealer TC Harrison built their brand new depot at Chapeltown Sheffield right alongside where the Churchill sat on the plinth in about 2007. I am a regular visitor to their depot and for the few weeks after the Churchill dissapeared I was often asked when I was going to put it back because they thought I had "nicked" it ! Some of them were more serious than others and I had to do some investigating to prove to them where it had gone. All I can say on that one is money buys tanks !!!

  16. Yes you are right but Foden, I believe, fitted both mechanically driven and Hydraulically driven Darlington type 80's to heavy haulage tractors, essentially the same winch in each installation.

Could be wrong about this one but I think I am right.

Antar Mk3 winch is fundamentally the same as a Martian Recovery winch, same drum and same lay on mechanism. On the Antar it is chain driven from the PTO output mounted on top of the auxilliary/secondary gearbox. There is a de-cluch dog mechanism to free the drum so that the rope can be pulled out manually or with the aid of the small capstan winch. When winching in the handbook suggests using 3rd or 4th gear in the primary gearbox "depending on the load".

On the Martian Recovery the winch has a hydraulic motor connected to a 2 speed gearbox driving the input shaft. It too has the same dog cluch to disengage the drum so that the rope can be pulled out manually or with the capstan winch. When winching in sellecting high in the 2 speed gearbox gave a single line pull of 5 tons with a fast rope speed. When sellecting low this gave a 20 ton single line pull with low rope speed all of course dependent upon how many layers of rope on the drum.

I never actually did any proper winching with the Antar due to lack of a ground anchor, but carried out many winching operations with the Martian. I never had to double up with a snach block. The Martian ground spade was good if there was plenty of room between you and the casualty as it was not full width of the truck, you would drag the Martian back about 10' before there was enough earth built up behind the anchor to get max pull.

  17. What you have to remember is that this outfit is actually only the same width as any normal HGV due to the requirement for it to meet C & U when travelling unladen. The vehicle it replaced was a Scammell Commander and Cranes trailer which was a 10'6" wide tractor and 12' wide trailer. Now that was an imposing vehicle to meet coming the other way down a country lane !!!

The current Oshkosh / King outfit has to open its trailer outriggers to carry MBT's ect greatly increasing the overhang on the trailer which obviously creates stability issues. The cranes trailer had no such issues due to the wheel track bieng about 11' wide. There were no fancy hydraulics on the Crane Trailer to go wrong just plain old walking beams giving the most stabillity possible.

If you ever pass King Trailers in Market Harborough you will see at least 3 of the "new" trailers in for modification or repair.

All the old Commander / Cranes outfits were "sold" to the Jordanian Army with the Challenger 1's and are enjoying their second life in the sunshine after spending over 25 years in UK, Germany, Gulf war 1 and Bosnia in their first life.

    We call it progress ???
