  1. Not sure if this pictures been on before but it comes from this great old lorry site ! http://www.users.totalise.co.uk/~thetyke/id32.htm

Evening Andy, That is the Chris Miller ANTAR ued extensively during the building of the Dinorwic pump storage power station in Wales. It is now in the ownership of Fred & John Lawton in Derby who have a collection of about 50 different Thorneycrofts. They still have at least 2 other MK3 ANTAR's which came from DMD Construction in Cardiff. Dave Weedon of York bought the third one off Fred & John. I have a load of photos of the loading and transport of all 3 back to Derby in the mid 90s, 3 low loaders all carrying yellow and black ANTAR's in convoy back up the M50,M5,M6. Once back at the Lawtons storage facility we managed to get all three running so they could be shoehorned into the shed. Must dig out the pictures and post !

  2. We had a fisher panda generator which was installed on a coach(long story cut short)

It took its fuel from the main on board diesel tank , has a 12v starter battery separate to the vehicle electrics , had a roof mounted radiator/fan combo for cooling ,needed a 12v lift pump for the fuel .

Contact fisher panda ,they are really helpful, and friendly the chap in stores (john i think) is a wealth of knowledge as is tech support .

Give them the serial number and they will do the rest

    Jamie

    Thanks for that Jamie,

Iwill give them a call next week when things get back to normal.

  3. Thanks for all the replies, I have not telephoned the manufacturer yet but will next week. I did find enclosed inside a circuit diagram which states the customer as RACAL. It has a date on the drawing of 2003.

I have today installed a small fuel pump inside and had it running, it runs perfectly well feeding 28.2v back into the military starter pack which I used to start it (can be seen in one of the pictures). Not sure if this will harm the pack batteries.

Starting is quite clever, the starter motor is 12v but recieves 24v if the batteries it is connected to are charged,so it really turns over quickly. If the batteries are flat there should still be enough voltage for the starter to operate. The remaining electrics are all 12v working of a 24/12v dropper.

  4. That's correct, there are no RHD DROPS, they are all LHD.

Regarding David Crouch. Looking at the add again he has stated that they go from £5,000 upwards and some he is breaking. I don't think this add is a ploy by putting a good picture up to get people interested. David Crouch has a very good reputation. He wouldn't sell a vehicle to someone if it wasn't any good. He has the clout to buy a lot cheaper from Withams as he buys plenty from them, but he is known for selling vehicles with very little mark up (unlike Withams). All the people I've spoken to who have bought a vehicle from him have nothing but good words to say about him and are very happy with the vehicles they have bought. I bet you can probably get a good DROPS cheaper from him than you could from Withams, even though the vehicles came from Withams in the first place.

I must agree with LoggyDriver, I have dealt with David for probably 25 years now and never had a bad deal, I have both bought and sold with him. He is also a collector and restorer owning some very nice and rare vehicles.

    John.

  5. Hello,

Can anyone help me out. I read a thread on here about some Sherman's buried in Holland as defensive positions, but i can't find it now. Can someone point me in the right direction,

    Thanks

The last time I checked Holland was east of Stockport.

  6. Does anybody know what this generator is off ? It has a 28.5v output at 75A, is of British / German manufacture (Panda, Fischer), it has an output socket which is the US type intervehicle start socket, it has a single cylinder electric start Yanmar Diesel engine,it requires an external fuel supply and fuel pump, and it looks like this.

  7. I think the reason we couldent put FV430's on the back of DROPS had more to do with the width than anything else. (we carried CVRT often) Although the weight was a factor. Having said that how much did that stolly weigh? got to be about the same as a 430 series.

The more I think about this i'm sure it was the width of a FV430 and it overhanged so the tracks werent fully on the flatrack, so therefore it couldent be secured safely and we couldent haul them.

It was a definete no to us ever hauling them on DROPS even under STGO CAT 2 authority.

    430 IS APROX 14 TONS

    Stalwart APROX 8 TONS

  8. I can see why people are thinking its a chally, at the end of the chieftan days they developed a slab armour kit called still brew. They barely put it on as it was for war use only. basically it increased the weight still further and the K60 powerepack was under even more strain

I am certain a K60 pack would be under a lot of strain in any Chieftain think you meant L60 !

  9. Hi All,

Just as a matter of interest, regarding 432s. A big batch of them are **EA**. We have been trying to link the hull nos to vrns, mine is 10EA15 with hull number 815. DavePs is 17EA69 with a hull num of 1569, we managed to see 17EA68 and it has a hull num of 1568. Also 08EA41 hull num is 041. Notice any pattern, well we thought so until you go to 05FA68 and it num is F303 ?! And Dave's fv434 01ED15 is 042, but they appear to follow that the block of **ED** allocated to fv434s 01ED15 was the 42nd built.

    Are you all still awake??????

    Regards

    Dougy

I have found the same problems when trying to list all the known CETs, the sequence between chassis number and military registration suddenly goes out !

All are in the FD series. But found 2 with KJ on them.

  10. Great pictures Rippo ,thanks for posting ! Very clean machine ! :-D

Yes, I do remember, Lyme Park Steam Rally, probably about 1984/5. Not long after "we" had completed the restoration of the Explorer. We decided to have a little run round on the field behind where the vehicles were displayed not knowing that there was a hidden ditch / bog, we finished up with all 3 wheels on one side in the bog, rather than shunting to get it out we decided to self recover from the front using the winch hence your photo showing the winch cable deployed. We coupled the winch rope to a ploughing engine which was further up the field side on. We anchored around one of his drive wheels close to the ground. From knowhere suddenly a BBC film crew arrived and set up to film the whole episode, The Explorer came out without any effort but we were never able to track down the film footage.

Q67 GDB eventually finished up at Duxford but I understand that it may have now been sold on into private hands, does anybody now if this is fact ?

The "we" was the group of 6 Champ owners from Stockport who were friends who decided to club together to buy the Explorer from a recovery operator in Eskdale in Cumbria and then restored it to the condition you can see in the photo's posted. Later in it's life I bought out the other members of the group and owned it on my own for a while, the start of the vast list of heavy Military Vehicles I have owned over the years.

  12. Thanks John,

Thats not so bad then... I have that plate so should be ok.

Interested in the Ministry plate you have there.

Your Gross train weight is shown as being 38 tonne and a design weight of 40... the same weights as the 20 tonner although your chassis number has it as a 35 Ton RE Tractor, the very last of contract 1 # WV10312. The 67th vehicle of 67!

I also see that they have you down as 22.5 tyre size, is this a cock up on their part or have you changed rims etc?

Want to run mine at the specified 61 tonne gross STGO cat 2 which will obviously mean a higher rate of duty and also higher axle and train weights.... Where will I be able to find out that info or will VOSA already have it for those vehicles.....?

Any info you can give me regarding this will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again for posting the pictures.

The plate cert only shows what it can operate at under C&U (I think) you will need a special types plate from the manufacturer ? now that poses a problem !

With regards to the tyres, my Crusader was presented for its first test with 11.00x20 tyres fitted, their computed could not handle that as in 1997 all new trucks were on tubless tyres, so they put it down as 11-22.5 their judgement not mine.

It is just about to have a change to some very nice Continental 12.00x20s I have bought.

  13. I think I have found it.....

Its shown as a new arrival on Dave Weedons web site.

I have managed to contact him and the offer of hooking it up to the constructor once both restored is on the table..... :)

Best I pull my finger out!

Yes that is certainly the same trailer, now you need a ballast box... not a 5th wheel. Dave Weedon is actually a friend of mine as well. Suspect the tractor and trailer may be re-united at Great Dorset ? up to you which year ????

    John.
