  1. I'm not an expert but that looks like the one I got off E-Bay, turns out it was an Indian Made Solex Copy. I understand they where made under licence. I got it on there, waiting till I get the Carter that it came with refurbished. To be honest it works perfectly. Blip of the throttle before you start and it goes every time. Engine not run for 3 months till yesterday and it went on the second crank. No markings either that I could find.
  2. Thanks lads, I guess having never rebuilt a box before I'm just a little paranoid I messed it up. That said going thought the process has been quite satisfying. Oil levels are right so figure it's OK, I will drop the oil just to check, can always put it back In. I will let you know Much appreciated Nick
  3. I just completed repairing and refitting my Gearbox, Gave it all a good clean up and naturally changed out the oil in the process. Took out for a short run this afty, looking underneath after to see if it was still there :cool2:, Put hands on the transfer case and Gearbox, They were warm/hot. Not enough to burn but I wondered if that was normal. I'm sure some heat must come from the engine and exhaust. Never having even thought about it before, I'm here for a little reassurance or B. stop driving and check it out. thanks chaps Nick
  4. Now that is a heck of a thing...what is it ? Looks like a mobile Officers Mess or sumat ?
  5. With all the nonsense arising from "OOOH there might be a tanker drivers strike" I wondered if the Jerrycan on the back of me jeep would be legal if full ? All manner of sources seem to say 10 litres max (actually a quick search reveals 10,20 and 30 all quoted as the legal max) but no law has been cited. Whats the collective HMVF take on this matter ? Edit this from the BBC (formerly the premier news provider on the planet) http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/17548007 Kind of answered me own question by doing a bit of online shuftying. Found this rather well written guide from of all people The Royal Yachting association http://www.rya.org.uk/sitecollectiondocuments/legal/Web%20Documents/Legal%20Leaflets/Clubs/Premises/CARRIAGE%20AND%20STORAGE%20OF%20PETROL.pdf
  6. Due in no small part to the encouragement and tips offered by you chaps. Along with 6 1/2 hours of sweating and what I believe my neighbours are now calling "Jeep tourettes" (there where a few things needed sorting on the way) I managed to de-transmission Le Jeep. Did take me an age to figure out what the "Clutch Thrust Bearing Return spring" was.... then I found it hiding in there. I used some artery clamps from work, to lock on to it and ping it off, Think they will work well for the refit too. Big thank you chaps, I know we engage in a virtural world but without a few tips from here I would of been stuffed. Uploaded with ImageShack.us All I got to do now if figure out how to get the bleedin thing back on :-D Edit.. Oh and Pete the tip about the Iron bar, Golden ! I was fizzin a bit about where the heck I would get a soddin Iron bar from and what kind of idea was that etc etc (all part of the stress mate) Then I remembered the Broken Half shaft, Was one of the first things I did when I got her. Kept hold of it for no good reason really. But stuff me I used it today, just as you suggested. Thanks mate. Nick
  7. That's a great link, thanks Nick. Day off tomorrow so I think I know whats on the agenda. Keep you all updated cheers Nick
  8. Sounds easy when you put it like that, thanks. Daft question, does the gearbox and transfer case come off together ?
  9. I was wondering why there was a bit of a hum in 1st Gear so thought I would pop the inspection cover to have a shufty. Found this ! Uploaded with ImageShack.us Basically all the teeth Bar 1 ! are the same on First/reverse gear. Not good, but I least now I know what the noise was. I have the manual etc, but is there an online guide or piccies anyone could point me to for Removing the transmission. Ive found a few about rebuilding but not much about the takey offey bit. Im sure I can manage its just that Ive never done it before and naturally a bit nervous. that or any pointers from our resident Jeepery experts ?
  10. Fillin up on the last Services A34 north bound sat next to one of the there big tracked Artillery shooty things, took me an Hour up the M40 to remember AS90 ! Should of remembered having lived in a tent for a month not 100 metres from a battery of them Knockin 10 bells out of Saddams finest. a frightening 9 ! Years ago now
  11. Thanks for the advice chaps, as imple search revealed this thread http://hmvf.co.uk/forumvb/showthread.php?5204-Cracked-block Which has some good advice too. Think I'll have to get an expert to have a shufty at it. No intention of welding, but wonder if the bodged up repair didn't do more damage, whenever it was done.
  12. Shortly after I got my jeep last year I discovered the block had a crack in it. It had been rather well glassed over. this weekend I took time out to strip the remaining resin off and discovered a fairly large bodged up weld job. It all underneath the distributor. Not stitched that I can see, but some of the weld is now cracked too :embarrassed:. Bodged up a repair with a bit of JB weld and it's stopping the water leaking for now. Question is what are my options ? If its a case of a replacement block any ideas where I would look for one ?
  13. Great to see some familiar territory, all nostalgic as an exciled Teeside lad.
  14. Never an issue really. SLR mags fit fine in the 58 pouch, especially if the pouches where worn in. I seem to remember using a bit of chopped up Sleeping mat in the bottom at one point. Ahh them was the days :-D
  15. A jiggler ? Did an eBay search and came up with The Jenna Jameson Jiggler 7 inch action figure ? Not what you mean I'm sure ? My question then, what's a jiggler ?
  16. Saw the stage show, with a horsey type girlfriend, went along dragging my heels. Have to admit I thought it was remarkable and engaging. Think she did 3 hankies :0). I'd like to see the film though.
  17. Interesting, from a number of angles, Aircraft type .50's and mount. ? Airforce Uniform ?, Looks like a range, uniforms in the background include Brit/Commonwealth, I wonder if this isnt Gunnery training ? or it may just be a Hopped up defence option, cool anyway you look at it.
  18. That must be a liberated Jerrycan as the yank ones are flippin terrible for pouring, need the spout as I found out to my petrol soaked shoes cost LOL, I should of listened to the bloke who I bought the Jeep off
  19. Think I got me threads crossed Oopsie, that or its a prototype of an UnderBeach Assault Vehicle ! :red:
  20. I reckon either War Bonds or a tour to encourage workers to stop bunkin off work, Just the wording on the poster behind the Jeep about Time wasted, super clear pics, WL does it again
  21. Dont think the first one is a Sherman, looks like the Rear end of an LVT track to me . Smashing pics again WL thanks for sharing. The Last LVT(A)4 looks like a prototype, with an M8 turret dropped onto it. Dont think the production ones had the brackets or whatever the vertical lines are on the turret for hanging spare track links on, fitted.
  22. Not wanting to stray off topic but this youtube clip shows (right at the end) the Ark in action. Before that theres some great footage of inflatable decoys and some of the other funnies in action Something went wrong...
  23. Mate, I surely wouldnt take offence at being contradicted :-). Its all speculation on my behalf (and the bloke that built the model). Always good to have a different take on a mystery. Looking at the model again, you may just have a point, a sort of up and over bridge, maybe theres another bit that tags on the back, maybe carried by the next LVT ? I'll keep on a digging. Edit, had a closer scan of my Concord Pulblications US Amtracs and Amphibians at War 1941-45, which says "One of the inovations at Tinian was the use of "Doodlebugs", These were amtracs modified with a timber ramp. They where intended to beach against high sea walls, allowing subsequent waves of amtracs to crawl over them and over the walls. Twelve where built and they proved successful". Degsy you seem to be right, Just cant figure how you would get a Vehicle up the back end. Unless .... you reversed the LVT up against the wall and lowered the Front ramp ? then it would make perfect sense ! Another great WW2 mystery solved folks LOL Even more editing : How bout this from an account of the battle of Tinian: "Seabee ingenuity provided the way with portable vehicle ramps called “Doodlebugs,” which could be emplaced by LVTs, allowing more access for tanks, halftracks, 75 mm howitzers, trucks and jeeps." See the wording "ramps" suggests to me that they where "deployed or dropped", which looking at the photos, the sort of support rail is not very substantial and is curved all the way down at the front, Im going with the thing is plonked against a wall, the LVT reverses out from underneath it and leaves the ramp in place as it flops off the front. Oh heck its too late to keep thinking this hard LOL. Over to you Degsy :nut:
  24. Degsy, your probably not far off, The Ark had ramps at the front and back (if you didnt know). Just parked itself in place be that against a seawall or in a ditch. Looking at the Doodlebug here, Im thinking it drove up to the obstacle dropped the Girders with planks on top on/over it and backed off, leaving a ramp/bridge in place, as the carpet payed out in front. Again looking at the pictures, that looks like a case of chopping a rope or two . Seems with the Ark and its brothers we where streets ahead in developing specialist vehicles back in the day. Have tried an epic Tinterweb search and have yet to come up with precious little reference to the Doodlebug that w'lancs has so kindly shared with us. Edit of course 5 seconds later I found this In the write up the chap does say he's sort of speculated as to how it was exactly, but this looks like a pretty good effort to me !
  25. You might be thinking of the Churchill Ark ? Designed to do just that. These doodlebugs appear (reading the captions). To be a Ramp ? Placed to get over low obstacles, like maybe the low log sea walls encountered in the Pacific. All speculation on my part mind you;)
