  1. Two theory's, 1. A portable armoured Field latrine shield :-D 2. A sort of sand or snow channel for putting under wheels when ya get stuck ?
  2. And some video of it swimming (no one was more than surprised than me :-| ) [video=youtube_share;exwfuU097bo]
  3. A video I put up on YouTube after I built my first ever scratch built model. LVT(A)1. Amtank. I'm improving the running gear for the Buffalo Im trying to finish :-D [video=youtube_share;pgqb8ZA1eFE]
  4. Yeah fully signed up member here, Wasn't Dick Emery Aircrew in the RAF ?
  5. Chaps, as a former member of the Royal Corps of Signals I've been approached by an old Squadron mate who is now a WO2 SSM at 21 Signal Regiment at Colerne Near Bath. He asked me if I knew how they could furnish a function In July with some WW2 vehicles especially any that might pertain to the Royal Corps. Any ideas ! Or anyone local to that area who could help ? They can probably fund some mileage and you will be royally hosted ! :-D Nick
  6. Oh Yes the start of a life long Amphibious Obsession for me.
  7. Sorry to resurrect this thread but quite by chance I came across the SeaBees museum page on Facebook. There is a an account of how the Doodlebug was conceived and deployed. It was to provide a ramp up a 14 foot vertical face on one of the beaches. Apparently the LVT2 would beach drive to the escarpment. Deploy the ramp/bridge and back away leaving the ramp in place. Took me a while to remember where this had been discussed but I had to share.
  8. I didn't even know we had a model section ti today :-). Anyway Im currently working on a couple of projects to add to my space absorbing collection of 1:16 RC AFV's This is Hopefully, a fully functioning and swimming LVT 4 Buffalo. So far so good the suspension has been a real pain as I wanted it to function. Ramp Works and is waterproof (ish). I did an LVT (A)1 which swam pretty well and the next one in the frame is the LVT-1 which is a hard one as I had to draft up a best guess scale plan from loads of pics and a 1/76 resin one.
  9. Reading this thread, it's clear that to a certain generation of us, Airfix models their construction and imaginative and varied demise was a right of passage to manhood. My dear old Dad used to tell the story better...but stood at the back window puffing on his pipe and proudly admiring his Handywork with the lawn mower.......At which point, a flaming fireball that was a C130 Hercules, it's miniature crew wrestling the controls, impacts dead centre of the grass and explodes in a Turps and bog roll fuelled catastrophe ! I'd love to of seen his face, but me and my mate Simon where hanging out of the loft window with an ancient still camera trying to capture the moment. Pause, 2. 3............NICHOLAS GET DOWN HERE NOW ! Air rifle based antics too. Dad used to get a model maybe once a month at the Newsagent and if he came up the drive with a brown paper bag...Oh Boy ! I know their where lots but the two I remember where the MRCA Tornado prototype and it's red white and Black Scheme. Also a bit out of theme the enormous Airfix. E-boat. So yes owning my Jeep is really an upscale continuation of a life long modelling obsession Huzzah for Airfix and long may they go on ! oh and I think an Honourable mention to Matchbox, Their kits where to be found on a stand in most local newsagents I like the multi coloured plastic and the Pictures on the back of the box and the little diorama scene the tanks came with.
  10. Bit late in on this one, having read all the informed guesses......first thought was can you imagine the noise !! The crew would have all been deaf ! And the Bren gunner would of had his undercrackers wedgied up into the intake. Brilliantly eccentric concept.
  11. My Hodge Podge was an early 6v but the previous muppet upped it to 12V. Mostly :cool2:. Don't forget Bulbs, like he did. Though not sure it's as big a problem 24 to 12 ?
  12. Hoping to go too Im only a 5 minute cruise from Maple Durham too.
  13. Bugger I was sure I'd put the Gearbox back in the right way. Are you saying I should think about refitting it backwards ? :cool2:
  14. LOL, ok I will go into the garage and encourage all French Bolts to Identify themselves and surrender immediately.:nut:.
  15. Hi Bodged me Sony Walkman into the Harness of our Spartan in Bosnia. Used a regular Clansman connector cut back the Mic pair and did the same with a cable from the Jack plug. Seem to rember knowing the right wires to match but it's been detailed already. Worked a treat we cruised around withe The Blues brothers sound track belting out. Think we could switch it out using one of the selector boxes. Have you managed it yet ?
  16. Not wishing to be self righteous.....but Was Staff Evans privy to having his Name Unit and e-mail published on a public forum ? If so, then I shall hush up and fade Into the background, If not maybe a little moderating is due ?
  17. So am I pushing the boundaries of acceptable behaviour by occasionally wearing an Old Para Smock when out walking the dog ? It has wings on it and stripes and a DZ flash....anyone offended ? Dear Lord, Re-enactors, I appreciate seeing a well presented living History set up as much as the next chap but for the love of common sense. What right does that give you to very publicly cast judgement on some blokey wearing some old kit be it at a show or a strip club. Its dressing ups and is truly TRULY harmless. I take it there are those amongst, that would frown at my Jeep being slightly inauthentic and held together by a mish mash of old,French and modern bolts ?
  18. Jeepdraw did it as an article.. http://jeepdraw.com/John_Barton3-GEARBOX2.html http://jeepdraw.com/John_Barton3-GEARBOX3.html http://jeepdraw.com/John_Barton3-GEARBOX.html Very useful
  19. I had an epic couple of days with this not long ago. First attempt and a lot of trepidation ! That said now I'd be a lot happier doing it second time round. Tips I picked up (missed the block of wood one though, that would of been useful). If you got one a long metal rod through the back of the front leaf springs to support the engine once it is lowered. I happened to have a knackered half shaft that worked a treat. I was lucky to borrow a winch and secure it to the garage roof and used it to take the weight of the box and transfer case, though next time I would have two straps crossed under the box. it is a lump though, I took off the cross support just because working on my own it was quite bulky. The consensus seems to be two jacks but get a mate to help and the. You have the whole thing on two jacks with no place to go. I ended up lowering it bit by bit onto asheet of wood on the floor so I could give me self a hernia  And drag it out. It sounds easy in the manual but be aware it's heavy and awkward and there really is no substitute for experience. Rebuilding the box was actually quite simple, lots of tips and John Bartons blow by blow guide is excellent. The boys at Dallas Autos said they'd do it for me but to save costs why not DIY and they could offer advice/parts etc. Really chuffed I did it myself now...and it still appears to be working !
  20. Well the lists quite extensive as the previous owner was not too diligent with the old maintenance or lubrication schedule. Recent big issue was the gearbox having eaten itself !. Had to strip the lot out, rebuild it, which was as big a project as I've ever attempted. Having said that, once I undertook to have a go myself, it turned out to be quiet an easy task, reckon I could strip and assemble a gearbox in an hour now :-D. (I say easy, it was quite a daunting task at first). Again lots of great advice and encouragement from the chaps on the forums here and some true inspiration from Jessie the Jeep/Steves' thread about his rebuild and John Bartons sublime photo series on how to do it right.
  21. Well its been a bit of a slog, but I got the gearbox fixed and fitted. Im probably going to strip her bare over the winter but as the paint got a bit greasy and scuffed during mechanical exersions I thought Id give her a quick blow over. Just to see out the summer you understand. Fitting her out as a British truck. (huzzah !) From the Phantom GHQ Liason detatchment attatched to 50th Division. Theres a story there but its a bit self indulgent. Finally FINALLY got to spin around the block a few times in the sunshine. The Field Pack Radio, dosnt contain a "radio" as such, well not yet but that will be another project (Unless anyones got one hanging about ?) Uploaded with ImageShack.us Im quite a chuffed little first time Jeep owner. Massive thanks to all who have answered my questions and offered support ! Nick
  22. Good tip Deadline, I actually fitted the rear bearing, the one between gearbox and transfer case the wrong way round. Subsequently knackered the cover trying to get it out. Didn't even realise until I'd spent a day wrestling the whole lot into place and went to put the back cover on the transfer case. So I'm pretty sure it's all the right way round. (now). Thanks for all the advice chaps, I'm convinced all is well now, just had a crisis of confidence but followed advice as given to a happy ending thanks Nick
  23. The Vehicle section of that Pamphlet is pretty much the same way we used to do it, interesting stuff. Thanks Mash.
  24. Well, back in the 80's we just used to go to the woods on camp and chop down a few "cam poles". No hard and fast rules but about 1.5 to 2 inches thick at the bottom, and about 10 foot long. These where inserted under the draped Cam Net to form an irregular shape and lift the net off the vehicle. (Land Rover, hence the length). I've no idea if that's how it was done in WW2 but I imagine it was something similar.
