  1. Great thanks for the link to the piccy, it would make lots of sense only on closer inspection, mines got a Zenith ! carb fitted ?? says Model W - o on it...sorry for butting in slick,
  2. I got them from this chap http://www.vintagewarehouse65.co.uk/ very helpful 39 quid the pair. (Found via Ebay by the way) They are "Ring Automotive" 5 3/4 140MM Dip and Main units, just the ticket
  3. I have a similar problem, sound almost the same, friend brought his Hotchkiss over Friday and it was purring like a Kitten. Mine sounds like a Lion with Emphasema. Was going to check the timing before moving on, but will have a look at the "accelerator diaphragm" first.....err where is that exactly ? :-D
  4. An update, 1. Moved house 2. Now got big Garage and a workshop :-D 3. Started work on the Jeep again.....I say jeep, MVT have verified her as being born on 21st September 1955, so Elle et une M201 I think, certainly a mix of bits under the bonnet so to speak. anyway Ive set about a fixing stuff to try and get through an MOT then onto registration. A picture paints a thousand worms as they say. First Job Headlights, off the shelf 5 3/4 inch units, fit just right and with some magnificent wire work...they work Dip and main beam. Im going to tidy up the cabling now I know its a goer Next onto the Brakes, I need to remind myself of stuff I think its a sign of age :nut: Started off looking at the wonky Brake Pedal which lead to a whole string of problems surfacing and a decision to replace the lot. Brake lines are all on, Just got a master cylinder to do....building up the courage for that one. Replacement pipes are male-female, where as the old one had this brass double female adaptor inplace. No wonder the Brake lights were a bit iffy ! methinks a bit of chopping and amalgamating tape are due ! A little Inspiration turns up on my driveway, I was put in touch with a local chap who is a friend of friend etc, Who very kindly came over chewed the fat and gave me oodles of very helpful advice and showed me his splendid ride, I am inspired ! :-D
  5. Just been reading this thread with a wry smile on my face. Reference PT kit, I did a bit of a late career swap when I was in and found myself on a course with a bunch of kids (one of who's dad was in my previous squadron). They where a bit naughty so our course was ordered to parade for the weekly Wednesday PT session in issue PT kit ! :-D. So they very smartly turned up in theirs' and I had to dig through some boxes and find "mine". Formed up in 3 ranks all uniform and lovely apart from the slightly more mature herbert hiding at the back.....in Red (more pink now, and still with me P company number in faded cracked white on it) V neck t shirt, Shorts Enourmous, green socks folded down 3 times, and white blancoed Army road slappers. (Took me forever to find the white paste for them). Well they did say issue !. PTI was most sporting once he'd stopped howling and as I could run the ass of the little war dodgers he stood me down on the premis that I got him a beer in the mess that night. Reading about KF shirts Chinese fighting suits and all has had me chuckling for the last hour. ! For the record, I love Cheese Possessed, and compo sausages, and I swear on my hamsters life that I saw the RAF Compo Recipe Book for the 10 man boxes, the Liason det had it on their FFR and made use if I remember. Ooh its all coming out now. Nothing will ever compare to the field Kitchen the Crabs set up at West Freugh on now let me think Purple Warrior ? around 1988 ish, Unbelivable food those blue job slop jockeys where turning out, especially the cakes !
  6. Thanks Panelvan, I solved the issue by getting a pair of Headlight units off e-bay. Fit nicely in the Headlight cups (is that the right word ?) and I now have working dip and main and they point in roughly the right direction, and I can chaneg the bulbs if they ever go. Im at work now but will get a link to the chap I got them off. thanks again Nick
  7. Now Im a self proffessed "expert" on all things Jeep :-D Id say that looks like a Bantam ? or the Ford prototype looking at the Headlights, shields infront of them and the shape of the bonnet ? (only coz I just read me new book on jeeps !)
  8. Man, thats a real shame, thank heavens the crew all managed to get out. Cant imagine the work that goes into getting and then keeping these old warbirds operational especially a bomber.
  9. New (ish) to the site, and luckily had a slack day at work yesterday to lol about and read "the" forums. Luckily Ive just got me jeep and fulfilled a lifetimes ambition....well mostly. I sat in a GPA when I was a lad too and have been amphibious daft ever since. Lottery win would = a DUKW or a GPA or anything floaty drivey to be honest. Mark your Schkill and vision with this wagen are jaw droppin. It looks superb and how anyone could detract would baffle me, they would clearly need to take a dip in a lake with out a schwimwagen ! I know its bin a while since you completed but I hope you are still justifiably proud of her. Beltring this year ? I will hunt you down and shake your hand. To my shame I am envious but temper that with heaps of respect for doing it, really doing it and floating it and sharing your efforts with muppets like me. Right whens the kit out ???? That said I reckon a GPA rep could be on the cards, I reckon I handle that (yeah right) Nick
  10. Solved ! Thanks Centurion, I had to dig deep and remember the precious little I knew about electrickery. Your tip was the answer i.e. get a 12v 2 x 10w flasher unit, cost all of £1.50(EBAY) I guess I could of got higher watt bulbs as the ones fitted are 10w. I was dissproportianatly chuffed when the winkers where a winking. Now next problem......no bugger told me the Left hand wheels had left hand threads on them ! How much straining did I do...then remembered Mr Vasey from engineering class in 1979.. Give em a tweak the other way. At which point I discovered I had spent an hour and a can of WD40 tightening the damn things. Anyway New tyres all now on and back to being chuffed.] (Tyres came from John Grey, Greys autos as directed by Steve so big thanks for that)
  11. Jeep parts are all out . Looking at it, is there a suitable stand in, ie off the shelf 12v unit. Im looking at it and guessing its a 5 3/4 inch. Actually think Im answering my own question here. Will shoot off to autoparts with unit in hand and see what they have to offer. will update for reference
  12. Ooh nice one, and a 20 Armd Brigade marking too ! Hope it all goes well mate Nick
  13. Nice one mate, didnt realise they did a 12v version. Of course its a bank holiday isnt it, so no ordering til Tuesday :cheesy: thanks very much.] Nick
  14. Hi all, my jeep came with Odd headlights, They are 12v Sealed beam units but dont appear to have Main and Dipped filaments. Certainly the wires seem to be absent. Is there an off the shelf replacement I can get ? I found some in the states on the interweb but would rather get em from the UK. (Are main and dipped a legal requirement on an old vehicle in the first place ??) cheers all Nick
  15. Good luck with it mate, your only a couple of weeks behind me. That said Ive got a house move coming up so no doubt that will impact...good news is new place has a double garage and a workshop !!! YAY :cheesy:. I know what you mean about old, my jeep is older than all the cars Ive had put together !
  16. Just bin through all this with my Jeep, which is a bit of a mix this is an excellent reference that I used to reveal numbers on mine. Had to to do a bit of paint scraping to find all my numbers though http://www.m201.com/chassis/chassis.htm
  17. Thanks, The grill seems to be quite new compared to other bits of the body work. Airfilter topped up with oil and engine purring away....well purring might be a bit optomisitc, I think Im going to have to go to work on tappets, Tyres are inbound any day now from that chap you put me onto. I think this is the best thing I have ever done (ish)
  18. Thanks again Steve, pictures as requested. Apologies first one is a touch blurred
  19. Must admit I was surprised at how tight it is in the drivers seat, Yanks must of been smaller back then. I happened on this while browsing yesterday. http://www.1942gpw.com/c-45-G503_WWII_Jeep_Driver_seat_modification.aspx seems a bit involved but might be what your after Nick
  20. Nice one Centurion...however its a 12V system. I tried some resistors in parallel but it made no difference. Tried an off the shelf Flasher unit from Halfords, which clunks once but no more flashing. Bit flumexed to be honest, worse thing is 25 years ago I was up to speed on all this sort of thing, seem to have forgotten. I think I will try another flasher unit first. Good news is I got the Horn fixed, just put some ptfe tape round the steering wheel nut thread, now I can toot away to my hearts content !. Nother question, the Hotchkiss air filter, Im assuming but is it meant to have oil in the bottom and if so is it just engine oil, only there was none in there. There is a fill line, which seems to indicate that air would have to get sucked through the oil first ??? is that right ? Oh one more, forgive my ignorance, my headlights, they work but should they have have a dip and a main beam ? There is a foot switch but that just turn the lights off. I took the lights apart today but couldnt see two elements in there and its a 12v sealed beam unit. Ive got more, no really I have and I will get a piccy of the chassis etc in the a.m. thanks so much chaps, you have been really helpful and kind Nick
  21. Hi all, I already started my posting frenzy in the American vehicle section. Im Nick Live in Berkshire, sat in a Jeep aged 8 which was a healthy 3+ decades ago, wanted one ever since. Meanwhile spent 22 years in the Army, now work as a Paramedic for South Central Ambulance service in Reading. So I got my Jeep couple of weeks ago and now having a ball putting her right for MOT and Registration, Joined the MVT and bought a new socket set LOL. Bizzarly my money seems to be dissapearing at an unexplained rate. whats that all about., Anyway glad to be here and already had some marvellous help and pointers from Forum members Nick
  22. Ok few piccies of various bits and pieces. Engine bay plate mounted infront of the radiator. With 04038 as Chassis number. I wonder what the "KM" in a circle means ? 04038 on the Front Right Chassis rail just behind the bumper. French Army acceptance Chassis number ? 1491 stamped on the left side engine bay chassis member. Which is the French factory chassis Number ? 025055 above the rear spring mount, The French Army registration number ? Le coquepite (I made that bit up :cheesy: ) Showing no Willys notch in the facing, bolted on steering bracket. Floor starter (out of shot but to the right of the accelerator pedal, Angled support frame etc. Gun mount, de mounted, Plate on the bottom put on the right way round now protecting the exhaust and giving access to drain plugs. Wipers fixed. Lights all working. Hopefully sending off the papers to the MVT in the morning, to start the registration process All I need now are tyres and shes good to go for MOT. Oh wait up. The bloody horn. It works but if I put the nut back on the steering wheel it closes the circuit and stays on ! Is there meant to be some sort of insulation in there ?. Ahh just thought, the indicators. Bit miffed to find the 6V relay in there, so got an off the shelf one from Halfords. No worky. Works with 6V one but way too fast, i.e. twice as fast as it should, any thoughts. Thanks for all the input so far guys, you have been a big help. Nick
  23. Blimey this is complicated. Fun though. Uncovered a myriad of serial numbers with reference to the M201 site. Hotchkiss chassis number on left chassis rail 1491 French army chassis number on Right Front Rail behind Bumper 04038 French Army registraion number 025055 on rear right chassis above rear of rearmost spring mount. MALT plate of 026305 as previously described. So, Elle et une Jeep Francais mes braves ! possibly with a load of Willys bits to boot. Will get to work on pictures of features shortly thanks all
  24. Thats the chap I found on e-bay thanks for the recomend. Seems like a good deal
