  1. When we did the Comet for Munster, we got on to Hohne. There were a lot of HS30's, and M48 turrets on M47 hulls. That confused a few!
  2. Not only can you own a tracked vehicle but you can shoot it's guns too.....
  3. Nobody is suggesting trying to legislate accidents away. This thread is about eyesight tests. Unfortunately, it is a fact that eyesight deterioration is an insidious thing and people will continue to drive, often without realising they have lost some visual accuity. It's also unfortunate that despite your claims, these people often continue to drive knowing they can't see sh*t. Self declaration is not working.
  4. An HGV requires a medical at initial, again at aged 45, then at 5 year intervals till 65, then every year. This is the validity period of the licence and reissue requires a medical. Eyesight tests have always been part of the medical and they are a proper test, not just a 'can you read that number plate'.
  5. I'm all for freedom from legislation for personal activity when you've only got yourself to hurt. Unfortunately bad driving, and I include lack of skills, concentration and ability to see in this, kill thousands a year. Frankly, if Johnny Scrote wipes himself out in his hot hatch by driving like a tw*t, I couldn't care less but he usually takes others with him. It could be my daughter.
  6. No, that's why I said ''I understood''. I have never seen any document claiming Road Traffic act does or does not apply at show sites. I would be interested in seeing what you have on the subject, if it's not to much of a thread shift!
  7. VOSA test stations have a load simulator which presses down on the bed above the axle being tested. This can be set to give the required load. If you present a vehicle that this cannot be used on, you have to load the vehicle to a prescribed weight.
  8. That will be classroom based theory. I mean for car drivers!
  9. Quite. The current situation where the onus is on you to declare yourself unfit is somewhat open to abuse!
  10. About time! They should introduce refresher driver training every 5 years too.
  11. And remember, before the war, BSW head sizes were bigger than their equivelant BSF sizes which is why a spanner is sometimes marked 3/8 BSW-7/16 BSF. This explains why a modern 3/8 dia BSW bolt needs a 5/16 BSW spanner.
  12. Hi Mike, welcome! Getting quite a few from the colonies now....:-D
  13. It's the fatigue index that's the problem rather than hours per se. High energy manouevers use that up far quicker than gentle flying.
  14. Tony, re the trivia question, it used to be 1.1.1940 and was changed to 1.1.1960 in the 1980's. A 20 year update seemed fair though I suspect another similar update is unlikely! Why 1940 previously? Who knows, though I do remember lots of 1939 GMC CCKW's in the early 1980's..... A little bit of knowledge regarding GM's designation system would uncover the nonsense there!
  15. Understood. I bet it would be interesting though! I have never felt the urge to try it....
  16. They were having fun with you or perhaps it had gone into folklore! It was designed to have such a function and is described in detail in all the wartime manuals. A full description of the gearbox and all its functions is a part of most relevant Service Instruction Books of the time. The advice to avoid the neutral steer function only relates to when driving on roads. In other words, not to attempt a neutral turn whilst rolling forwards.
  17. That's very similar in principal to the Wilson steering units as used in Covenanter, Crusader and Cavalier, though being British, it's a very complicated system controlled by air pressure. Stick forward = high range through an epicyclic First stage back = neutral Second stage back = low range through an epicyclic Third stage back = brake on and locked track All accomplished to much hissing of air!
  18. Yeah, Jack likes his leather too.
  19. Didn't think about that.......:red:
  20. Bodge getting on a Sherman = danger for the driver. Bodge driving a Sherman = who knows? Looking forwards to meeting your uncle. :saluting:
  21. So how are you going to find out how to drive it? If you're not talking to me that is?
