  1. Dear All I have been shopping again to ensure we have a 4x4 capability should the winter turn nasty and ended up with a Landrover 90 GS, formerly 35KL88. I have the MERLIN report and it was with 1, 2 and 3 RGR at various times from 1994 to 1998 - hence the stickers fitted by previous keeper - and "JSCS NSBS MAT PK(V) LONGMOOR" from 1998 until release via Withams in 2010 - was that long term storage ? The vehicle has wing box fittings but is only drilled for cables on the RH wing - there was a side stalk on the RH side too but no sign of any power or signal cables remaining (if they were ever there?). It was released as a soft top and is now a hard top - which I will probably keep for warmth and security over winter. I intend to fit "clip in" mounts for a Clansman UK/PRC/320 and UK/PRC/352 - I probably will do a separate non-original battery pack to run the DCCU and TUUAM rather than fit radio power cables as there seem to be none. A set of Dexion and mounting hardware for a 90 hard top is on the way from e-Bay - does anyone have to hand good photos of how the vertical supports at each side fit inside the vehicle ? I will do some better pics tomorrow if it's sunny - for now here is the vendor's e-bay photo. Iain
  2. Now added a Landrover Defender 90 GS from 1994 to the collection Iain
  3. Thanks for that - lots of history and operational data but not much about the printers ! Iain
  4. Rick At the risk of diverting the topic - what is the story behind the carriers ending up there - were they intended for agricultural use ? Regards Iain
  5. Best Wishes to everyone for a happy Christmas and a healthy, happy and successful New Year in 2015
  6. A follow up on the optimum length: The 2m rod is 1/4 wave at 8 metres - a little over 30 MHz - the TUUAM is designed to make the 2m rod electrically shorter (so achieving efficient radiation) by means of a series motor driven variable capacitor (a too short antenna needs series inductance at the base like the 349 or 351 whips, a too long antenna needs capacitance as in this case). The TUUAM is actually an exceptional ATU as it can manage a range of frequencies of more than 2:1 without use of variable inductors (at least according to the circuit in EMER L212) where the natural length of the element is nearly an optimum 1/4 wave at the low end and an end fed 1/2 wave at 70MHz which is quite hard to feed. To achieve this it has two additional motor driven tuned stages between the radio and the final series capacitor. Regards Iain
  7. The chaps at Woolpit Garage have been busy and the donor doors (with later style good mirrors) and windscreen are fitted and the cab welding complete. The oil leak was the compressor oil drain pipe which is now properly attached. General View of the cab & new windscreen Right Front Wheel Arch Right Front Left Front Left Front Wheel Arch Left Behind Door We still need to address the rotted floor where the old radio battery box leaked acid - there is very little left of the longditudinal metal and wood floor there I'm planning to leave a square hatch there so a vertical mast taller than the rear body can be mounted there with the excess length below the floor - see the radio link SUMB photo at the top of the thread. I also need to get the cab floor and engine cover refitted and install a decent heater - I bought a compact heater unit from e-Bay and I'm going to connect it direct to the windscreen vents where the U-shaped rubber pipe is. The other work needed to get it on the road is to 1) Fix the leaking wheel brakes and adjust the parking brake 2) connect the proper fuel tank and get rid of the small gravity fed one used by the previous owner 3) Reconnect the high/low ratio lever to the transfer box 4) New lights and complete rewiring 5) New Tyres They are now looking at the brakes (which seem to have drained their fluid through the right rear wheel cylinder since I first saw the truck in March). The rear cylinders part no. L621171 are available NOS from France on ebay.fr (but the seller won't ship to UK) - looking at the casting number on photos from e-Bay and my previous SUMB I think an equivalent Bendix part is 33396 used in the M35 Reo - I've ordered a set of 1 3/8 inch (35mm) seals. I also got a pair of of spare Reo M35 2.5 ton truck rear cylinders for very little money from the US as a backup. These are the same bore and stroke and according to a Bendix equivalents table on line although I am not convinced that the mounting holes are in the same place yet - we will see when the wheels come off although based on my previous SUMB it will just be perished seals - at £12 each it is worth the risk. We are going back to the garage on Tuesday to see how bad the brake problems are once the wheels are off. I'm still undecided whether to get new hoops made and fit it out as a soft top or to get a box body - the RB44 ones at Witham are going for around £650 and I don't think there is much to choose cost wise - it really comes down to correctness vs comfort and security ! I hope to go and look at a RB44 body over the holiday (thanks Si) and measure up to see whether it will fit (I think they are a bit too wide) Best wishes to all readers for Christmas and the New Year Iain
  8. Hi Si I am thinking of buying one of the RB44 bodies from Withams for my SUMB - if you have one around I would be interested to visit and have a proper look and measure up as I think you are a lot closer than Withams ! I'm particularly interested in the width overall. Best Wishes for Xmas and 2015 Regards Iain
  9. Coal Storage ? I have seen a similar brick structure used to contain a pile of coal elsewhere.
  10. Welcome here - I have the little cousin of the Berliet - a SUMB Regards Iain
  11. Jack The VHF base for the TUUAM has to be the version with the extra cylindrical section (which contains a small UNUN transformer) and the VHF antenna is always 2 metres for Clansman as far as I know. The side stalks can be used for HF with a single wire connection from the bolt on the antenna base proper to the ATU inside (and no cylindrical section), or for VHF with the cylindrical section under the base and a coax. There certainly were 4-radio VHF fits in rebroadcast vehicles with the IBRU that would have needed it This topic was covered at length in: http://hmvf.co.uk/forumvb/showthread.php?21088-Antenna-base-query http://hmvf.co.uk/forumvb/showthread.php?36191-Antenna-mounts-for-HF-radios&highlight=vhf+antenna Also note that the RT321 TURF25W ATU has tuning tables for "Rod 3 x 1m" and "Rod 4 x 1m" so these are legitimate for HF - as far as I know there are 3 NSNs for "Bottom", "Middle" and "Top" rods and the 3m version is 1 of each whereas the 4m has two middle rods. Regards Iain 73 de G0OZS Hope this Helps Iain 73 de G0OZS
  12. Jack It's looking quite smart in the photo already - congratulations on your purchase Iain 73 de G0OZS
  13. Clive VMARS were successful in retrieving the Clansman and Clark/RACAL mast EMERs through the FOI route so it does work for obsolete equipment. The release was subject to a "research and private study" restriction which has been implemented by making it a membership only resource I'm not sure if a private FOI request would be as successful so I will try everything else first Regards Iain
  14. Clive Many thanks. I can see a FOI request coming to extract these Regards Iain
  15. Richard I doubt Eagle House was even built when the printer was being made. What's left of the hardware business is Trend Communications Ltd which went to Telemetrix plc at the break-up or the original business rather than Phoenix and is now a subsidiary of Ideal Communications - they only do test equipment and I believe they represent the legacy of a different part of the original Trend business. Regards Iain
  16. Richard I have thought of that because I have been there and I actually know people who work there but they are an IT service company now (part of the Phoenix group - I think Trend Network Services exists only as a legal entity now) - I don't believe there is any link to the manufacturing heritage. Regards Iain
  17. Following a recent trip to Withams I have ended up with a Trend Printer 610 (or rather several) and would be interested in any documentation to avoid trial-and-error discovery of the serial communication settings. I think the 600 series shared the same basic printer and V.24 serial hardware so manuals for 610 printer or 619 keyboard/printer units will probably have what I need. As an aside the Withams listing was wrong - they were described as model 615 but on peeling the "do not cover" label are confirmed as model 610. I have attached some photos so you know what I'm talking about ! Regards Iain
  18. Alex The French counterpart of EMERs are MATs - the ones you probably need are "Guide Technique" - drivers manual and "Reparation <name of vehicle>" the repair manual. Certainly for the SUMB MAT3437 the repair manual comes in two volumes "figures" (diagrams) and "texte" (procedures for each dismantling, adjustment and reassembly). There are also "installation" MATs for various accessories such as radio stations in each vehicle Regards Iain
  19. Jack A slightly cheaper and purpose built alternative - Arthur Barraclough still had some of the NCRS trailers from 30 Sigs (I believe he bought the unsold stock from RAMCO) - see: http://www.milweb.net/classifieds/large_image.php?ad=74684&cat=7 These were a purpose built cabin and trailer for radio use but (from experience having had one) are front heavy and you will need to ballast the landrover forward of the rear axle to ensure steering and front brakes work as expected - I understand the original owners put steel plate on the floor of landrovers used to tow them for that reason. The other gotcha (from painful experience again!) is that they have a cable operated parking brake which sticks on - always jack it up and release the brake or you will end up with the wheels and drums off as I did ! Best Regards Iain 73 de G0OZS
  20. Very smart Bedford QL going through Rattlesden about 3.30pm - probably a good choice of vehicle given the flood down at the bottom of the village today !
  21. @ FESM_NDT: Thanks. Based on my last SUMB where the cylinders were OK but the seals are perished I'm hoping it will be just seals anyway. The ebay.fr listing is attractive because they are NOS - at that price I am really surprised that he won't post here. @ Private MW: I know RR Services well from when I had a SUMB before - they hold less stock since they moved but they had one dismantled to the rolling chassis stage when I was there last on my way to the W&P revival. Iain
  22. Mike Re the SUMB the brake fluid seems to have escaped since I originally looked at it in March The air system is OK (pressure holds in tanks and pressing pedal operates air cylinder after several days parked) but very little braking effect and reservoir level has reached bottom (I remember checking and it was about 1/2 back in March). There are signs of fluid around right rear wheel so probably new seals in the wheel cylinder needed I can find NOS rear wheel cylinders in France on ebay.fr but no postage to UK is offered iain
  23. Had a bit of garage time today - one more problem to add to the list: brake reservoir is now empty (was ok in March when I originally looked at the vehicle) and looks like left rear wheel cylinder is leaking. I probably need a Bendix L621171 - they are on E-Bay in France but not shipping to the UK Does anyone have one on the shelf for sale before I call RR Services ?
  24. A very nice vehicle and I am impressed by the radio system - it would be interesting to get some more photos of them to try and work out what was installed and how it all fitted together - I recognise some of them but have never seen the boxes near floor level before Regards Iain
