1. its a bit like first aid whos ever being prosecuted for trying to save a life
2. Yep and how the hell is HMRC fuel dipping van and officer going to get where farmer is digging out to dip deisel and why would they be bothered. same as councils demanding this and that public liability insurance yes if your contracted to them they demand it. if you have a road legal tractor with insurance you have public liability covered and you want to help clear a road nobody is going to pull you over and lock you up. I cannot think of a case where anybody has faced prosecution for helping clear a road for using red desiel or damaging a road surface as a favour to the public only when working for commercial gain.
3. Basically once snow has turned into packed ice forget it steel or rubber aint going to grip if the guys who are willing to spend 2 hours pushing and shoving and towing with tractors to get a truck out had spent 15 min with a bucket on clearing road when it was soft snow you would have had no problems. I know this will rub people up the wrong way but i think if every body did their little bit when we have a bit of bad weather instead of standing back and saying the councils arnt doing their job life would be a lot easier. Taking it back to basics hows about if every body was responsible for any footpaths boardering thier property and any part of the road they parked their car on the road on estates say how much easier would it be one and all leaving councils to concentrate on the main routes

Snow..

That reminds me of my first ever vehicle mini van. Put an 1100 engine in it fibre glass front and a set of Kliber 12" mud and snow tyres off a Hillman imp on the front. had to sledge hammer front footwells to get full lock. Dont remember driving it it snow but would travel great across ploughed fields etc never got stuck going out to mend tractors and crawlers Lasted about 6 months then floor and seats fell out wish i had looked after it and still owned it
7. No as crow flys we are 10 miles north on North bank Blacktoft 40 odd miles by road But have opened a satalite base at Sandtoft near Trolley bus musem we seemed to spend a lot of time round your way just lately Tescos home delivery vans have nearly kept a truck going full time during the bad bad weather geting stuck on ice and hills in housing estates etc
8. Quick picture showing road conditions aroun here from 10 days ago this is the M180 MW. Put picture on to show a good way to hang on to a tandem wheeled axle if you want to move a vehicle sideways. I hinted on previous post it takes very little to move a vehicle sideways on ice or packed snow we use a 13mm chain with shortening claw on one end passed through a hole on wheel rim and back out of another. It can also be used on front axles of very old vehicles and new trucks with disc brakes. Beats laying on your back to find something to hang to
9. These pictures taken in England during building crane has 50 ton rating also 50ton constant line pull main winch wonder if they will ever enter service in UK
10. Spot on Richard. The euipment was a swedish design that was built here under licence for the British Army for use on the Crusader. Strangely even though it was a superb piece of equipment it was never adopted for use in the Swedish army. The kit is more than a match for any chassis it is mounted on. The kit on the Scania above actually served its time on a Scammell Crusader in the British Army before being cast. I bought it and mounted it on a Volvo F10 chassis and it did many hundreds of Heavy winching and towing jobs going down as far as the South of France. After 8 years i put it up for sale and it was bought by a guy from Sweden who drove it over to near Stockholm and remounted on The Ex military SBAT scania he sends me pictures of jobs it has done and reports it works as well now as it did when built back in the 70s Sorry i dont have reg no of vehicle
11. Many thanks for the offer but i have a couple of 24V esphacher night heaters thats why i was asking which had 24V electrics That and the fact we get a lot of truuck jump starts,
12. I know the weather has been unusual but i am convinced we need a four wheel drive service vehicle. I am going for a landrover so couple of questions for the experts. Can i get a PTO take off for all the EX mod vehicles i only want the flange drive so i can put a hydralic pump on not a shaft to rear end. Which ones have 24volt systems so i can fit night heater
13. Heres a picture of an ex swedish army SBAT scania thats been modifiyed and currently earning a living doing recovery in a civillian role. But it owes a lot of its success to the British army any body want to take a guess why
14. Brilliant vidieo that one. I actually feel sorry for the guy apart from the obvious mistake of not setting the brakes it was a perfect recovery. Maybe it was a case of familiarty but it shows take nothing for granted in recovery double check every thing it will pay off in the end and never no matter how much you are being pressurised rush the job. A subtle piont about the vidieo it shows perfectly what i tried to explain about the difference in the way ridgids and artics behave when been winched over. Note how the slack in the fifth wheel causes the unit to lag behind when being stood up then suddenly flops over and is the first to hit the floor. The pictures of the landrover show it had had a battering i heard it got stuck on a beach and washed out to sea and was washed up back on the beach a week later in the state shown??. Dont know how true this is. Interestingly the kit that is recovering the landrover is mounted on a newer chassis but is the 70 year old holmes 45 as mounted on DT969 says something for the design concept when it can still make a livinging to day?
15. Just found these pictures thought i would put them on to show how effective scotch blocks are if you are on good ground or tarmac I tried to find these pics many posts ago when i was trying to explain how to max out on holding power try it out on a pioneer it will make a big differance if you put scotch blocks on rear axle as i described

Snow..

Just seen -16 tea time to night on a back road at Barrow upon Humber also on news not far away last night it dropped to -17.5 at West Butterwick. Strangly it didnt feel that cold while i was winching a van out of a field and on to a slide bed. But one of my ratchet straps which had been in cab froze to deck of truck before i had chance to fit it Company has been to at least a dozen vehicles to day with frozen cooling systems and two trucks with waxed diesel
17. Hi looks like Vulcan gear on back of there good gear. Often wonder why milatry dont try twin winch to rear equipment certainly more versatile and options than straight lifting or winching. Any body else used their winches Reason i ask is has anyone noticed how easy it is to move a vehicle sideways on ice
18. Anybody had to use their winches in this recent bad spell ????.
19. I would suggest its because its fitted between line of vision and wiper swept area of windscreen
20. Along with testing the seat security and belts on vehicles with air systems they check the stop works and then pump the the brakes untill warning buzzer/light comes on then check gauges re start vehicle and note air build up on gauges while there they also check visability through screen telling you to get rid of sat navs sun strips etc Or at least they do at Beverly Thorpe Arch Doncaster and Leeds The taply test is done as you say round the cicuit and the hand brake is tested on the ramp if rollers cant be used. I have had tested Leyland Martians Big Bens Foden F70 like this But beware you will not get an MOT certificate after it all you get is a certificate of road worthiness because very few large milatry vehicles can be plated and tested. Please try your selves but it is an utter minefield when it comes to plating and testing and it makes me wonder how people can say they can run over width vehicles legally
