  1. I am suprised nobody has made any comments on this video. I think it shows really well i couple of pionts i stressed when giving tips on towing with a pole. I know its not a pole but a draw bar trailer but the principle is exactly the same.. Remember i said what could make things start to get scary Braking when not in a straight line down hill slope slippery surface this clip has the lot. The driver is obviously very experienced and has done this route or similar many times before and is going very slowly i believe he is relying on engine braking to hold him back. About 1/3 in to the clip and as he starts to turn the corner he decides to touch the brake. This is were it starts to go wrong. you will notice the truck slows slightly but the air has not yet started to brake the trailer this is were the trailer starts to push the rear of the truck around. Luckily this also has the effect of making the back of the trailer hit the roadside and slow the combination down enabling it to come to a complete stop. Believe me i would have been a very frightened man at the piont with that drop there
  2. When i first watched the video the first thing that struck me was the dicipline of everybody getting well out of the way exagerated by the fact the clip was speeded up. I guess the whole crew had perhaps seen the odd broken piece of kit at one time or another
  3. If its any size the price of scrap nowadays would make it worth having a go at
  4. As for sealers use what the manufacturers used when they first built the vehicle (none apart from a light film of oil on copper head gaskets) . As for oil dont be too pedantic put some in. It will run with out it but stop eventually. Remember when these vehicles were built oil technology was not at any stage like it is now. So basically as long it has a sump full of clean modern day engine oil (cost is irrelavant unless you believe advertising blurb) it will do what the average MV enthusiast wants. With a couple of exceptions e.g it will be running 24/7/365 hauling vast loads or you have tuned it up and entered it in the the 1/4 mile at santa pod just put some oil in it
  5. if you get it MOTed on its chassis number the Dvla will usually accept this and reg it as a Qplate you can sort out the age related issue at your leisure. Just because its got a Q plate dont mean it cannot be altered in the future on this sort of vehicle
  6. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gh1TprGoB1Q&feature=related another one i think i would have had my fist up my bum driving this truck
  7. found this an interesting video
  8. No you have the wrong idea i dont mean the shunt button on the Trailer . As you rightly say that makes the trailer brakes in operative. No i am on about the button on the floor of the cab of the drops it works only the brakes on the non driven axle (i think) it was put there so when manouvering in a yard etc at slow speeds it would bring the vehicle to a stop with out using vast reserves of air. Acts a bit like the left hand inching pedal on a forklift. Eg it creates enough resistance to stop the vehicle via the torque converter slipping as long as you arnt reving the nuts of the engine.
  9. Try using the shunt button on the floor when manouvering about thats what its there for
  10. just make sure you carry your camera at all times im am sure you there are are still plenty of treasures to photograph riding about. my first trip there i was in buggiba sat on the sea front rocks when a fire broke out in some houses an ex army green goddess style vehicle arrived to put the fire out but had no water on board so while waiting for a tanker to arrive from ( i think Valletta) one of the crew jumped out and put a wooden chock under a back wheel cos the hand brake would not hold . the rest of the crew started to rip the roof off to save it and some went in side and started bring out personel belongings. every body including tourists helped were they could. If nothing else i will guess the people are some of the nicest most helpful people you will ever come across although i havent been for quite a number of years. Also if you like to go for a quite drink go off the tourist trail and in to one one of the labour bars like our working mans clubs show any form of id beer is for nothing once you can strike up a conversation with a local. or at least it used to be 20 years since i last went. Malta is a place you will love or hate but you have to put only a little effort in towards been friendly and make conversation and you will get great rewards ignore all i have said the guys already been and done it

  13. Sorry if it seems abrubt but if you have nothing other than a car licence no you are stuffed for driving a stalwart on the road legally despite what others might say. having said that you can drive what ever you want on private land
  14. Out of my depth here but it seems when you asked the original question you already made up your mind. As to its usfulness i think you are the only one who can make up up your mind. If you want it to depicte a particular truck age period then i can understand your posting which way are you going? regards tags. i think the way you asked the question has maybe given the rivet counters food for thought. So what you want to know what is perhaps ?? what kit do i buy for this period i am trying to recreate and how do i indentfiy it
  15. if its 1/4 tapered thread to 3/8th unf female the bits to kit it up with an olive fitting for the pipe from the stockist we use will cost you arond £3.50

  18. Been out for a beer and every body in localpub was on about the treat we had earlier today with the close up. It was an arranged flypast on behalf of two ww11 bomber crews who lost their lives in a mid air collision. The memorial is at Balkhome about 1 mile away from where i live. There was also a service in our local church and apparently there was some WW11 vehicles out side although i have no other details. All on my own doorstep and i knew nothing about it until it happened But what a sight.

  23. Like i said electrolysis. Connect to positive side as sacrificial anode while possibly cleaning some thing else. once desired amount of rusting pitting has occurred simply reverse current and it will clean back to good steel dry and wipe off and its ready for painting
