1. Never mentioned this before there is also evidence it has been Rolled onto its drivers side scour marks on O/S leg foot plate on crane seat bent and i mentioned damage to engine cross member which was cracked had had a chain wrapped around it. Although it had no damage on cab consistent with been rolled.
2. Great that s what i was after. Appreciate your help to date have trawled through thousands of pictures on web looking for in service pics found numbers 30 KE 78 at a show somewhere and 30 KE 82.
3. Seem like the above comments might have dampened you bonfire. I guess the land rover would be street legal and conform to brake regs. Instead of pressing against steering wheel hows about slide seat forward and pressing against seat base. I think it would classed as a trailer and fill all the regs. I would think it dead easy to fab up a small two way ram with a strong spring inside and a air valve that allows red line to keep spring pulled back and yellow line to exaust it
4. All depend how you want call the vehicle you are towing EG if its a broken down vehicle then it need not have any brakes after all that could be why it is classed as broken down. If not its judged to be a trailer and as such if it weighs more than 750kg it has to have brakes the above is a way of getting round ECC regs that forbid connection to any part of system unless specifically provided for that purpose by the manfacturer
5. Yes dead simple to fab up and would cover all requirements legally. Couple of tips keep pipe to air ram small dia so you dont have brakes lagging behind and sticking on. Ram was about 1 1/4internal dia dont be tempted to go bigger as you could soon distort or break something
6. Many years ago we looked after three Commer TS3 cattle trucks for a local farmer. He had us fit an extra leaf on each nearside front spring said they steered better something to do with the camber on the roads?
7. http://www.awdirect.com/brake-buddy/heavy-duty-towing/ This is identical to the one we had. Will put my thoughts under recovery towing forum tomorrow
8. That looks a very clean unmolested piece of kit. Very good start for a restoration
9. I will have a look for you its yours if still here but i believe it went with the Volvo f12 it came with when we sold it on. Will do you a drawing to show if thats the case.
10. just been swatting up on Ashchurch seems one hell of a set up there. Any body on here been or worked there
11. Got a cast note for Foden today but only had quick peek before swopping for a reg number. Heres What i gleaned Army no 32KE80 date in service 1986 cast 01/2011 Cast from Ashchurch Would love to know more of its History or see any photos in service. I know Ashchurch is were vehicles from Canada arrive but do vehicles from other overseas postings also arrive here.
12. Reinforces what i have said truck drivers done their job got in to trouble called out some one to help them. Somebody comes thinks it through job sorted. Some body on a macho trip or lack of understanding. which category would you put it in. Honestly if recovery driver had said no too risky or leave it while while summer no body would have thought a lot worse of him. After all he at that time is the one the paying the piper. The only thing hurt would have been his pride when some body sneaked in after him and did the job But it is an in built thing in some people not to give up and is a GOOD trait in people who do recovery to have it. But mixed with lack of the basic understanding its DANGEROUS. Sorry but cannot give any defence for the guy driving the recovery truck other than he was unlucky in that it happens day in day out all over the world and does not get caught on video his episode did
13. Lets face it towing and recovery is either a job you like or a pain in the bum but i think even the most seasoned recovery addict would get worn down working in these conditions day after day to keep in topic there are lots of military vehicles in video
14. Don,t worry about buzzer Reg,s say two means of identifying low air pressure so warning light and gauge is ok. Was changed after many years of being enforced when some body realized deaf people can drive
15. Just had a look at that video dont come no simpler or clearer Re registering the aec if you dont mind a Q plate all you need is the engine number chassis number Mot certificate with chassis number on it and insurance and means of payment. Tell the staff at Beverly tax office its your first time and they will help you fill form in. If you want age related plate you will need all above+letter confirming build date from a respected body eg AEC society etc if you get stuck i may know someone. Dont ask me why but it has to be a letter even if you have an original manufacturers plate riveted to the chassis with YOM build date or gerbotag stamped on Beverly wont accept it. The Mot wont be a problem as you will well know the lads at Council Yard Anne Mead test station are pretty helpful as long as everything works as it should. That is if you are using it for Private use and not wanting it plating and testing.
16. Think this will explain what you need to know regards the Reo wrecker Never used or operated one or indeed watched the above video but have been told by a contact thats how he sorted his out
17. Think you have summed it up spot on Big ray its all common sense. At no time in my posts have i ever discouraged any body from helping any body out of a tight spot. Only to spend as much time thinking it through as doing the job. Of course something,s happen and one does things by reaction and gets away with it. But this guy was being paid by the hour. All over the world at all times similar cockups will occur but we dont hear about them. Just trying to slam home how easy a little good will can create big problems. A little thought can save a lot of grief Saving grace is on this job no life was lost
18. you deserve to grin i think you have done a fine job
19. Looks like somebody put a little more thought into job getting it back out
20. How intriguing. Could it be a home brewed collector device to encourage more oil flow to the camshaft centre bearing. I really cant think. Like you say its a fair bet if it has a part no it will be Meccano not Bedford
21. also post war vehicles were not by any means built to the standards we expect . when i took the recovery gear of a leyland martian i found many examples of miss drilled holes in chassis even down to a broken 1/2" drill bit still wedged in the hole were a bolt was supposed to go covered over by the rear roller that diverted the winch rope to the front of the vehicle. my view of how far you go is if its not affecting its structural integrity and its your vehicles its your call paper over or make right
22. On the video you can see the soft strap used to link the winch rope to the shackle on the digger. This to me is a good example of how extreme the Mod are when quoting SWL. The soft strap is the one originally used to lift the underlift boom which i believe was rated at 8 ton max. When i fitted the hydraulics to the underlift i obviously had no use for it so removed it. it was inside a heavy material sleeve which i cut of. This revealed the actual polyester lifting strap which had wrote on it SWL 10 tons but when stitched inside the sleeve it was being used doubled eg 20 ton SWL. the stitch fabric around the sling shows 7 lines so it has a factor of safety * 7 so minimum breaking strain when used to lift 8 tons was 140 tons so it proves the Mod never erred on the side of being make do. Like i said on another post why use 1 wire/pipe when you can make 15 do the same job
23. I am arranging proof loading for all equipment in the coming days will let you know how what it comes out at. I know i was not taxing it to any great extent but i did expect engine note to change when coming under load but no nothing. By the way thanks for advice in past i would not have been at this stage with out it
24. Thanks i agree certainly did not sound to be working hard although never thought to jump up and look at pressure gauge i fitted. On the video it sounds like a cheap old electric winch as fitted to a slide bed. Well chuffed with the equipment. Looking forward to giving it some proper stick if i can get any jobs for it. I think the machine i was hung on to is a Priestman Mustang 140 and at a guess weighs around 14 tons so its a fair old pull broadside with tracks locked
25. Took some pictures today for an advert also short piece of video. Thought i would put it on YouTube cant believe how slow it was to upload will this be my line speed that is slow or is it always like this first time i have uploaded anything for 4 years and was on dialup then still can not remember it taking that long 58 min for 38 sec Was trying to hold camera and work wireless remote same time hence quality of shot. By the way that is slow speed eg hauling in not the faster speed for taking in slack. Still got a lower speed by working levers manually
