Five years in the Life Guards and the last 24 yrs as a Mechanical Engineer on all sorts of gear from rolling mills to robots. I am presently working for a small company refurbishing power presses from 5 to 1000 tons.
Been lurking on here for a long time but not a frequent poster. I have always been interested in any thing with tracks on.
I can vaguely remember training in 83 that no left handed firing was allowed because of the lack of opposite handed s6 resperators As the filter got in the way. Later in my time arround 87, 88 I remember an opposite sided resperator being issued to a pal of mine on a sniping course as he was a left handed shot and I can't remember this being frowned upon.
I run a SWB 2.0l Vauxhaul Frontera its done 170,000 miles I paid £280 for it. I blew the engine but parts are easy to find. Very capable off road and not let me down yet. Easy to look after, spares plentiful and cheap to run tax and insurance wise.
Check the track tensioner ram is not fully out (max adjustment) if there is any wear in the track left it will rattle
also check for loose, damaged, or missing track pin bushes on the inside of the tracks.
I did an exersise in 1985 /6with CVRTs loading in Southhampton and unloading in Scotland onto mexi floats. I think that was the last times LSTS were used tactically. I do remember one with its bowdoors open actually on the beach. I was also tremedously sea sick whilst circleing in the Irish sea the night before landing
I remember the RAF totally destroying a Scorpion in the early 80s during the parachute practices for 5airbourne brigade and a Scimitar being very badly damaged. Thats when TALO was developed.
Seriously;- we were always taught to appraoch from the front and not mount until given permission. Also not to jump off but to climb down the same way as we mounted.
Hi,
I'm new to the forum and have just read this from start to finnish. What an exellent restoration. It does you great credit. A brilliant specticle in sympathetic enginering.
Well done:-D:-D
Hi all
Alf Parkin from Stourbridge. Been suffering with my health recently and found the site whilst bedbound. Ex soldier, crewman on CVRs. I am interested in vehicles of all types. Getting back on my feet and looking to get involved in some restoration work.
Cheers Alfie
