right then fella's i'm down here in southampton in my van not the vw toerag. the trailer is rated at 2.75t gross not the 3.5t that i wanted so i was a little worried that i might be pushing it a bit with regard to the max load but by that time i was comitted so i thought sod it. (it'll be reet) i stopped off to look at the carrier (not picking it up until tomorrow) and thankfully the seller had removed the tracks and rolled them up inside, so the carrier can free wheel but better than that i can put the tracks in the van which will bring the trailer weight down by a ton which puts my mind at ease and means i'll definately be legal. as for the carrier it looked great and the seller had chucked some freebies in as well. all in all a good day. thanks for all your advice i'll get some pics up on saturday. eddy

thanks john i'm picking up a plant trailer up from fletchers trailers in ashton this afternoon and i'm setting off for southampton in the morning, the trailer is 700kg and i reckon the carrier is 2500kg so i should be within the weight limit, i'll just have to suck it and see. incidentally the trailer guy has 2 diamond t's in his yard, both are very tatty but look to be structurally sound so i asked if they were for sale, he came back to me the next day and said he was looking for £8.5k each, he wouldn't budge so it looks like they'll sit there til he dies and then get scrapped, what a waste !!! cheers eddy

looks like a good mod to me, when i was in bosnia they were thinking of doing something similar to saxons but nothing ever came of it, shame really as you can never have to much armour between you and the bullets. eddy

next time i do something like this i'll ask the forum members to help out before i try and do it alone but i'm a great believer in learning from mistakes (trouble is i never do) but it usually comes good in the end. eddy by the way i've got something else even bigger brewing that'll make the carrier look like a toy :cool2:

well spotted adrian, i wonder how many of us would have thought nothing of it and motored on with thin oil, the thought of seizing that engine of yours makes me feel bad but it would probably give you a heart attack. the importance of good maintenance and inspections cannot be under estimated. eddy

hi fella's back from corfu now, no mv's seen over there but i did come back with a mk 1 wife (late production model requiring only minor cosmetic restoration) still not made my mind up whether to tow or put it on a flatbed, if i could get hold of a flatbed that would be the best solution but i don't know where to start looking is it possible to hire one, i have the my c+e so license not a problem. anyone got any idea's. cheers eddy

thanks jack to be honest i'm a little disappointed that the seller shipped the container before i could chuck anything else in it, but to be fair i should have explained my intentions earlier, being laid back and easy going is not the ideal way to go about international shipping, next time i'll get something written down at the beginning but you learn from your mistakes, when it's all done and dusted i'll start a thread on shipping and the lessons i've learned so the next guy can maybe avoid a few pitfalls. this won't be my last import so if you could pass your freight forwarders detai's on i'd appreciate it. cheers eddy

thanks for the reply robin cheap = money in my pocket, where it belongs i know what you're saying about weights but i believe the carrier in it's present condition ie stripped will be within the vw touaregs gtw. as for armchair trailering, i've towed everything from a motorbike to a t-55 and then some. there's another reason to go to southampton it's a great opportunity to visit the iow tank museum and find out where some of the range wrecks ended up. might be my only chance for a while. eddy
