  2. hi alan nothing as yet, although i got an answerphone message today from the sellers shipping agent in the states with regard to the uk agents email so i'll get in touch tomorrow and see what comes about, i'll let you know how i get on cheers eddy
  3. thanks norman looks like i'll be taking the trailer option then cheers eddy
  4. no mate, got back on the plane before they could catch me
  5. hi fella's the time to get the carrier from southampton is fast approaching and i'm thinking of how to transport it back to manchester. the carrier is rated at 3 ton 5cwt (3000kg) unladen and mine also has parts missing so i would estimate another 400kg to be deducted from that, if i use my friends plant trailer which is rated at 3.5t and tow it with my van or a vw touareg is this legal. cheers eddy
  6. thanks alistair just got back from my stag do in tenerife, let me know when you've got more info on the steering box, all i need now is the rad and engine and i'm on the road :cool2: thanks again eddy
  7. there's a leopard, conqueror and a cent as gate guardians at castlemartin but no churchills, although there are two range targets ssw of the camp that look like churchills, have a look and see what you think on googlearth http://www.panoramio.com/photo/25997713 http://www.panoramio.com/photo/25997691 http://www.panoramio.com/photo/25997630 eddy
  8. bit of a fuzzy memory on this but didn't they move the churchill further into the camp, like i said it's just a vague recollection, i'll have a look on google earth eddy
  9. thanks alan it all sounds a bit archaic and a little hit and miss but to be honest i quite like the idea of doing it the old school way, maybe we've got too used to everything in triplicate and forgotten what it is to simply trust in someone else, however having said that, a little heads up from the seller would have been nice. i'll sleep a little easier tonight knowing what i do now cheers eddy ps. now i know how it's done this won't be the last :cool2:
  10. hi fella's right then, i have a small problem, i spoke to the seller and he told me the carrier was being loaded at new york today and would be at southampton on the 12th june, now therein lies the problem firstly i told the seller to ship it to liverpool and secondly i'll be in corfu getting married when it arrives and won't be back until 14th june so i'm stuffed does anyone have any ideas or experience with shipping these things as i'm not sure what's going on i haven't agreed any dates, the guy just shipped it and when i asked why southampton and not liverpool he told me it was $2k cheaper ? also i haven't seen any paper work for the import side and haven't paid for the shipping , this wasn't what i was expecting i thought i'd sign some paperwork pay for the shipping and that would be that so basically i've no idea what's going on. can someone shed some light on it for me and do i need any paperwork prepared beforehand to pick it up and if so is it worth getting an agent. help !!! eddy
  11. keep asking round for us steve, with your contacts i was hoping you'd have got me 2 by now so that i had a spare as for being over optimistic on the restoration time frame i've always found it helps to set ridiculous targets for myself, that way even though i never reach them i'm never normally too far behind, so if that 1 month stretches to 3 months i'm still cooking on gas. eddy
  12. hi luke welcome to the forum, try this site http://www.milweb.net/home.php when you've done the dealers go to the classifieds section eddy
  13. hi fella's i thought i might catch out a few ranters with the bit about no nails and caulk, i'll have to be more subtle next time. let's not worry about the engine for now it's the steering i want to sort out as that's the one bit i think i'll struggle on and i'd like to have all the big bits together and ready to go on when it arrives in the uk, my goal is to get it running and driving within a month so i can get a bit of fun out of it and then do what i'd consider as a rolling restoration, so any leads on steering assemblies ? any carriers on the ranges that i might get the range officer to part with :cool2: have a think for me, i'm sure between all the people that read and post on this forum that there are parts for just about every vehicle ever built, someone will have it. cheers eddy
  14. guys thanks for the advice but i'm no adrian when it comes to restoration, never mind metric or imperial fasteners i was thinking a tube of no nails and a bit of decorators caulk to hide the rough edges.
  15. top tip don't discard the old vinegar, simply place it back in the bottle and put on the inlaws food when they visit, this also works for other unwanted guests and if you really don't like them tell them about your trick but only after they've eaten
  16. hi andy i'll give you a shout when it arrives, come over and have a mooch, with regard to blasting i spoke to bob grundy on saturday and he reccomended a bloke called jack who works at his yard, (if you read this bob thanks for your time and advise, much appreciated and i hope you got the tiling done) i think he'll prime it for me as well, i can't remember the price but i thought it was very reasonable
  17. thanks alistair just to make you jealous i sat in a restored t16 today and i liked it, bit more room than a bren. this engine conundrum is gonna vex me, deisel v petrol i might chuck a deisel in and tell everyone it's a flathead what do you think. eddy
  18. hi john thanks for the offer of transportation, i had a mental picture of my little carrier all on its own on the back of your het rig now that would be a definition of overkill
  19. that's it fella's, now you know as much about the condition of the carrier as me, i'm looking forward to getting my hands on it, already sorted out the blasting and priming and spoke to a guy today that told me i could have dabs on a good g/box when he remembers were he put it,as far as i can make out the steering shaft, bevel box and wheel are gonna be the tricky bits to find but to be honest i'm quite enjoying searching around for parts and meeting some great blokes along the way.
  20. any leads on parts you can give me would be welcome and your thoughts on a dilema i'm facing with regard to authenticity versus practicality, ie :- do i put a flathead v8 petrol engine in or go for a ford deisel as a few wise old hands have suggested ? 2 more pics to follow
  21. hi fella's using my almost legendary mastery of technology i figured out a way to change the format of my carrier pictures so they would upload onto the forum :- i got the other half to do it hi more pics on other posts, 12 in total
  22. make sure you lock the hatch down securely when in the open position, i had a mate commanding a saxon on a brake test with the hatch unsecured, when the driver braked the hatch pushed his head onto the armour and ripped his face off, never saw him again, poor b#stard, still it could have worse it could have been me.
  23. i also use another name, my old army nickname was eddy and for 14 years all the lads i worked with called me that, it took a while when i came out to get used to being called my real name again which is rick but now i'm back to eddy again for all those who i meet through the forum, i met a guy today while on the hunt for carrier parts and i had to think for a while when he asked me my name i told him eddy after a breif pause, he must of thought i wasn't the sharpest tool in the box. eddy
  24. thanks steve much appreciated, once again the oracle has shared his wisdom with the unworthy
