  1. had a thick attack and got my locations wrong on the sunken tanks, it's 2 centaurs not cromwells and 8 valentines off moray firth not solway firth, see the links below centaurs http://www.divemagazine.co.uk/news/article.asp?uan=5064 valentines http://www.divemagazine.co.uk/news/article.asp?uan=707 anyone got a wetsuit eddy
  2. hi jim it would be great if you could get some pics on the forum, maybe a heads up on any locations as well. all the best eddy
  3. hi alistair denmark has a few achilles, mostly on oksbollergen i think, there's some stuff still on the german ranges, but that's all i've found so far, try this site www.hartziel.de you don't need to travel so far as there's 2 cromwells off brecklesham bay and 5 or 6 valentines in the solway firth, you can dive them if you're qualified. i started looking at tanks in poland before i realised there's more than enough on our own doorstep only trouble is there all shot up, some not as bad as others, but beggars can't be choosers, i'm planning a trip to sennybridge ranges give me a nod if you'd like to come along. all the best eddy
  4. hi john thanks for the reply, looks like i'll have to bribe the recy mech's next time they go out to move the targets :cool2: it's funny looking back now but i thought it would be a relatively simple affair to find a disused target and recover and restore it but then i've always been an optimist. it's just not acceptable to leave these ww2 vehicles to rot and let's face it somebody some day will move them off the range,( if they're no longer required ). it's only a matter of when and who. as always it'll be a case of not what you know but who you know and i'd like to be in a position that gives me a crack at it. it's not just owning an mv i want, it's about saving something that i believe to be a historic vehicle, one that our fathers and grand fathers fought and died in. that's got to be worth all the ball ache, whether i succeed or not it won't be through lack of trying. eddy
  5. hi fellas sounds like a lot of fun/hard work, i wonder if those days of relatively easy access will ever return or will the remaining targets be left to rot, there's still plenty of salvageable stuff out there i've got my eye on a couple but no way of getting them. any of the old sweats got any ideas on how to go about it ? eddy
  6. thanks adrian, i'll keep looking the only source of info i've found so far is the site i've included on the link, not much if any detail on the sights and there uses but it does list them all and gives a small write up on some. http://www.wwiiequipment.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=119:british-sighting-telescopes&catid=49:other-data&Itemid=61 cheers eddy
  7. i love looking at range wrecks thanks eddy
  8. thanks for the info adrian i wondered what the L and M were for :-). you don't happen to know of any books on sighting telescopes ? cheers eddy
  9. thanks for sharing the stories paul, this kind of thing is what i think most of us like to hear. it's the small details that make it all the more interesting. cheers eddy
  10. hi steve just another sunny day in cumbria :-) you were right when you said the achilles was pretty much trashed and not so surprising when you consider how long it's been on that hill.i did actually try to move the idler but like you said it was solid but if that's the only idler around then you'd have to mend and make do i suppose, i know i'd have it if they let me but then i'd have anything if it was free, (it's the skip rat within me), i'm the type of guy that leaves a tip with more gear than i came in with all the best eddy
  11. anyone need running gear for the marcus glenn sexton ? this is from the achilles shown on the first page
  12. it would have been nice to be there in the eighties and nineties as access seems to have been more relaxed than these days, i spoke to the commandant for the training areas around catterick about getting access in november last year and to say he was not keen would have been an understatement, maybe i caught him on a bad day, anyway he left me in no doubt as to the outcome of any future requests, but i'll keep plugging away these vehicles are part of our armoured heritage, our fathers and grandfathers fought in these very same vehicles and i believe it's our duty to preserve them. eddy
  13. welcome dinger full 22 years ! you wouldn't get that for murder. what regt are you in. all the best eddy
  14. here's one for sale in poland, an awful lot of vehicle for £2900. http://translate.googleusercontent.com/translate_c?hl=en&sl=pl&u=http://www.otomoto.pl/index.php%3Fsect%3Dshow%26id%3DT1435464&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dallegro%26hl%3Den&rurl=translate.google.com&usg=ALkJrhiWppZck6jT6edh88IRPvYYboNGwQ. eddy
  15. forgot to mention if you shine a torch on the red lense at the eye peice end it makes the graticules red for low visibility shooting, it also looks pretty cool, well i think so. i need to get out more eddy
  16. davie the sherman firefly sight is worth around £120 so it's worth keeping it in good shape, that one and the comet are my favourite sights eddy
  17. hi davie you've got the sight for the sherman firefly there and very nice it is too,but not right for the a/t gun. lee the sight you need is the no. 41, i have this sight and it's yours if you want it just let me know, however i think it'll be a while before you're ready to start fitting ancillaries and polishing the brass eddy
  18. hey grumpy it sounds like you've got enough rope for all of us
  19. if you give a man enough rope, he'll hang himself :-)
  20. hi fella's just a couple more 578 pics, this one served with 49 fd ra an m109 regt in lippstadt, they're a great vehicle to drive but not so great for the commander all the way up top unless he's had his motion sickness tablets :-).All us mechanics were secretly jealous of the recy mechs having the sexiest wagon in the workshops. sorry about the crappy quality(pics of pics) eddy
  21. excellent work and great flying skills, that guy must have ice running through his viens eddy
  22. iwm north feels like more of an anti war museum, they have a t34 and a sorry looking t55 and that's about it for vehicles, i was very disappionted on my first visit. it all feels a bit politically correct the sort of place that was thought up by a committee of artistic types who have no love of the military. having said that it's not all bad the cinema projection and sound effects on the museum walls is a powerful reminder of the cost of war.trouble is i didn't go to be reminded of mans cruelty to his fellow man i went to see green stuff with big guns on top . eddy
  23. thanks again for your efforts, it's what i believe this forum is all about. i owe you both a pint cheers eddy
  24. hi fella's you know it's funny but i've never seen a flak 18 in my life, then within the space of 2 weeks i met a fella with one sitting in his field and several more bogies and bits nearby,i bought a complete shell from poland and i end up with the sight off one from ebay, must be fate. now if i can just get the rest of it and maybe an 8 ton half track to pull it i'll be quids in. cheers eddy
  25. nice gun, here is the sighting telescope, bit pricey but probably quite rare. http://www.collectorssource.com/item.asp?recid=5504 they also have a complete gun for sale for £3700 w/sight eddy
