  1. I want to set up a website, but I haven't done anything like this before. Does anyine have an 'idiots guide' to help me or give me a few tips, please?
  2. I have some installation notes on 19 sets in Jeeps. They may take a while to find, and I can Email copies of them to you if you can give me your Email address. It does show aerial mountings. There is also a booklet showing a 62 set in a Jeep, but this seems to be very late, in 1945 as the set was not in common use until early 1945. I don't understand the 'Fuel Can' mentioned. All British vehicles carried a Water can, not fuel. The can should be green or brown and have a white + painted on it, to distinguish it from fuel. If you look at IWM photo B14289 this shows water cans being filled in 1944. Robert Davey
  3. Anyone seen the Royal Artillery version of the Saracen in the current series of 'Scrapheap Challenge' on Channel 4 at the moment? It seems to be just in front of the workshops, and crops up in shot ocassionally.
  4. I am hoping to get to Trucks and Troops with my WOA2 this weekend. Not sure which days, as I have some problems at home (family issues). Please say 'Hello' if you see me so I can get to know the faces of other HMVF people. Robert Davey

    Merlin Engine.

Lovely engine - I wonder if it is one that Ford produced in England?
  6. I have just looked at the IWM website, and there are only a few of the very many photographs they have in the library. I suggest you take a day (at least) to visit the photo library (Book a few days in advance), and look through all the books they have.
  7. Can anyone help with a contact name/address for this Weymouth event, please? I was thinking of combining a weeks holiday with participating with my Ford WOA2 car. Can anyone help with who I should contact? Robert Davey *robert.davey6 @ btinternet.com *Email address edited by Jack - just made some gaps in it so it doesn't get picked up by Spambots......which will send you shed loads of spam.
  8. I bought a Champ engine from L W Vass back in the early 1970s and it was identical to the one in the advert. All I had to do was drain the sump and re-fill with normal oil before trying to start it, and everything was OK.
  9. I have been talking to Chris Marchant of Vintage tyres in Beaulieu this weekend. You may mave read in the magazines that they are considering making another batch of 900 x 13 tyres. However, they only have orders for 89 tyres so far and they need more like 200 before a batch can be produced, so there is a very real possibility that they will not go ahead. If anyone out there is restoring a vehicle that needs 900 x 13 tyres or if yours are getting a bit worn, these will be the ONLY ones available that can legally and safely be driven at speeds over 30mph, and Vintage tyres supply all the other dealers. If you are even a little interested, please contact Vintage tyres on 01590-612261 or 0845-1200711 or Email them on sales@vintagetyres.com I am not involved with the company, I just need a set of tyres for my WOA2. 10. The scrap yard in the photos is Pounds yard at Portsmouth. I think the yard is now cleared, but I haven't been there for some years. The greyhound stadium and fly-over bridge give it away.
  11. Gentlemen From your positive reponses, I will progress with a British Ford V8 register, and will be in touch with those interested when I have something sorted out. As for the MVT comment, I was the Editor of Windscreen for over 7 years, so Yes, I will be contacting them. Robert Davey
  12. Although I have been involved with Military Vehicles for many years, I have never owned a wartime Jeep. Thinking I might rectify this, I took an opertunity to sit in one earlier this year. The problem I have is that I couldn't drive it as the steering wheel pushed into my stomach. I know I am over-weight, but not that fat! These vehicles were built for Americans, so how did they drive them as they are not the most slimest of people. Is there any adjustment on them to allow for the more fuller figure? Can any of you with Jeeps help with my question?
  13. I know of 4 WOA2 Utility cars, several WOT2 trucks, and some WOT1 vehicles. There are also some WOT6 and 8 trucks about. As spares and information is scant on these vehicles, I thought it was time for us to get together to help each other. Anybody think this is a good idea? Are there any other British Ford V8 vehicle owners out there? I am just trying to get people's feelings before going ahead and starting the register. Robert Davey
  14. As an owner of a Ford WOT2 and a WOA2, I was thinking of starting a register of owners of Ford WOTs, WOAs and other Wartime British Ford V8 vehicles, and publish a newsletter. I would only do this via Email, and would not charge provided other owners sent in articles adverts and news for me to publish. Would anyone be interested? I was going to distribute leaflets at Beltring to get interest. I am only interested in doing this by Email, and will not send anything by post. Would anybody be interested?
  15. Your comment about it being black reminds me of a joke. An Officer's wife is talking to another wife. "My husband's gone to Africa to command an African regiment. It has White Officers with Black Privates".
  16. I am fitting the fuel tank gauge back on my vehicle this weekend. I have a new cork gasket, but can anyone recommend anything to make it petrol tight? When the tank is filled, the gauge housing will leak if not perfect, and I am not sure if instant gasket or Hermitite will be petrol proof. Can anyone give me advice, please? Many thanks.

    Happy Birthday

Thank you very much. Robert Davey Reading
  18. Can anyone help? During WW2 Field Telephone Cable was D3, D8 (single or twin) or D10 which was black and twin cable (it still is today) but I don't know what colour or size the D3 or D8 cable is. Anybody out there got any idea? I do have some Yellow field telephone cable on a drum, but I don't know how to identify it. Also, I have a drum that should have D3 cable on it, but what is it? Any help would be appreciated.
  19. I beleive what you want is actually a normal tax disc, as all Army vehicles were registered in Middlesex with civie type plates and tax discs, up to about 1939/40, when the painted-on numbers came into force as the Middlesex office couldn't cope with the infux of vehicles at the start of the war. Try contacting http://www.britishtaxdiscs.co.uk/ and they can make up a disc for you.

    SRTTE

You could be right. The notes keep mentioning PVC cable for field telephones. The man left the Army in early 1946 and joined the Fire Service in July 1946.
  21. I went to a Car Boot sale today and had a lucky find. I got some Signals manuals (just general subjects about lines) but also some paperwork for a linesman in WW2. Question I have is what does "S.R.T.T.E. Ministry of Supply", mean? This was on his release document as to his regiment in the Royal Signals. The man also seems to have served at an experimental place at Warnham in 1941 dealing with field telephone lines, as there is a group photo. Anyone got any ideas?
  22. British wartime 10cwt trailers had 6 wheel nuts, but not split rims.
  23. Ditch the MW and get a WOT2. I never bother changing down as it does 15mph in top gear very happily - the Ford V8 is a lovely engine if it is set up correctly. I double de-clutch going up, and only take it out of 3rd when I come to a stop.
  24. I have been asked if anyone can help with a source of water proof grease for a Fire Engine. The stuff looks white in appearance. Its for a relative of someone my Daughter works with, who now owns a Fire Engine. Can anyone help?
  25. There was a booklet produced by the British Army during WW2 with all the Bridge plate numbers. It is basically the total weight of the vehicle plus maximum load in American tons (2000 lbs to a ton) and always rounded up. If the vehicle towed something like a field gun, then the weight of the total set-up was shown like a fraction - maximum weight on top.
