  1. Ok, as you all prob know i have had an issue with the alternator not charging. the light on and the batteries dying after prolonged use.

I checked the power and there is 2x 12V power pins live in the the lead that goes to the alternator. so i assume its the alternator!

I sourced another that i though was the same! its not! great!

    Mine was a mk2, this a mk3

the donar FFR i took it from had the lead mounted on the top facing section of the unit, min is on the bottom. I looked at the item and realised you can move the mounts. which i did! but the Lead pins are shorted in the mk3 and will not mate!

Can i change parts around on these units? or is it best to find a correct MK alternator?

Most people seem to think its the distributor box with issues, as the alternators dont really fail....

Can any one help my fault finding skills or "lack" of

    Paul

  2. Ok, landrover has been running fine.. done many miles!

From time to time the alternator light has come on.. but wiggle the big lead at the bottom it goes out! says to me a loose or broken connector.

Last night got called out to pick up my new girly from a party and the landrover went well, but upon getting home i stupidly turned the lights from on! on convoy tail! and did not notice!

So this morning upon trying to start the batteries were near dead and not able to fire the engine! and not able to get the new lovely lady to work! oops!

RAC come out, and jumped the landy.. upon testing the battery charge seemed the alternator was not charging?? odd i though as i have used it for 2-3 weeks and its been fine?

he tested the connector coming to the alternator and it had 2 seperate 12v lives ? is this norm?

Im just not convinced i need a new one! and his way of testing the batteries was not really convincing to me! i would use a volt meter! he used some odd thing that clipped around the wire and measured something with out making contact??!

If i do need one, where is best to get one? its the 90A FFR one 24V

help would be grand.... any ideaS?

  3. Ok i have a LWB FFR 1981.

I would like to make it EOD RE in northern ireland.

    What would be correct?

    Red wings?

cable cutter at front? any pics anyone?

also what unit markings on doors and rear?

    Union jack on back?

and anything else that wouldbe correct

Blue light etc on the rear ariel mount?

Can some one provide correct info as i would like it to be 100% right.. would an FFR even be used by EOD?

any help would be great as well as what fonts and unit markings are original!

  4. Usual day for me!!!

Where do i start, got up went to work! all grand.

Come home to find armed responce unit as well as lots of Police at my house. Upon entering i discover my room has been searched and my Deactivated weapons all checked as well my inert ammo! What the hell has caused this i wonder!

My landlady christy is cool, she knows what i do and indeed what i collect and own! but her interfering mother does not it appear! who had a key to let the dogs out! but instead thought she would come to the 3rd floor and have a nosey in my room! finding 3x L1a1's as well as Sterling SMG and browning hi power and a baton gun! Usually kept in the loft but i was oiling and cleaning them previous night before!

She alerts the Police! not her daughter! the Police! who rush around and strip my room and my deac's! I arrive and show all the paper work and all is good.... until! one female officer from Northern Ireland noticed a book i have next to my copy of "humber Fv1600 series" called "Ulster defence assosiation" she then brands me Loyalist and thinks im suspect!Cant even buy a book for reference pictures of the troubles! and runs a Full back ground check on me! because of a book!

All turns out fine, as i have paper work and indeed hold no religious beliefs or previous records!

What a day! how nervous do you feel when the police search your house! even though i have nothing to be nervous of!

    Blimey!

  5. Ok, i have no manuals and quite new to the landrover FFR engine!

The landy runs very rich from what i can see, black smoke on revs and hint of fuel in the air...

also will only idol with choke, how easy is it to adjust the carb.. as this is my instant port of call?

There is a small gust of blue smoke on start, but it is 25 years old, if i start using alot of oil ill rebuild what i have to..

but for now, i would like to sort the carb.. any one have any diagrams etc?

Also, with the axles what grade lube do they contain? and any general ideas!

If anyone in the Brighton area could come give me a small service idea would be grand! if not a few pointers would be nice!

    Paul
