  1. Where is the spark across the plug gap or holding the plug lead connector near an earth point? If it is at the plug, the voltage may not be sufficient to get a spark when under compression. I get about 1/2 in spark from the plug lead connector to earth. Do you get about the same distance on all plug leads?
  2. That's good news then really, because in the past I have had running issues with 2 & 3 or 4 & 5 due to reduced compression from failure of the narrow isthmus of gasket blowing a bit at these two sites.
  3. David the NSN would be the same. The Domestic Management Code was LV6MT8 or later 6MT8 was because it applied to more than one vehicle category. With the demise of Ferret the DMC became 9CVT as that was the only vehicle category now using it.
  4. These two cylinders that don't run they are not 2 & 3 or 4 & 5 by any chance?
  5. Neil I was just wondering whether these copper crush washers would give you more thickness to play with?
  6. I wouldn't worry too much if it doesn't match. I know there is an understandable desire to make the vehicle look as smart as possible, but patch painting was perfectly legitimate in service & to my mind gives a very authentic look. But each to his own
  7. Terry is the number not stamped on the front face? The patter is "FV" plus that number. Although FV does not match the FV pattern used on classic cars. The catch of course is that the key doesn't turn. It just goes in & allows the start switch to then turn. I have only recently fitted a barrel to mine. I had a dress rehearsal & the darn thing slipped in & I can't get it out. So I would be interested to know the answer myself. I was lucky because I did find an FV key that fitted.
  8. Headlight bulbs here: https://www.thexmod.com/item_detail.asp?id=3390 Sender is more difficult, thexmod have sold out: https://www.thexmod.com/item_detail.asp?id=8900 Bannisters may have one. http://www.milweb.net/go/banister/
  9. Jim I think your conclusion must be correct. #2 shows that there is integrity in the two leads. Can you just put a multimeter on ohms & put it in the sender to confirm it is open circuit but it does look that way. Check that the sockets in the sender are clean & not corroded.
  10. Steve a further use for pith that has not been mentioned. I can remember as a small boy buying joke "floating worms", probably from the Elisdon's catalogue, to be dropped into someone's drink. These were just a few inches of pith, they certainly floated but did not make very convincing worms.
  11. Just trying to find a time zone for your item Steve. I have a VAOS index dated 1953. I see Sections X3 and X4 had just been allocated but no VAOS for those Sections had yet been published. Items started to receive NATO codification from 1956. So it looks as if those piths date from mid/late 1950s.
  12. Without a scale difficult to know which of these it might be.
  13. Although X4 is now the DMC for nuclear lamps, I forgot this only happened because the previous X4 became obsolete. The earlier allocation now makes sense X4 - Electrical indicating instruments, qualified by Z1 showing it was those instruments in wireless equipment. So Steve your reading of the VAOS part number was correct & now makes sense
  14. In 1943 Section X was split into: X1 Searchlights, sound location & associated equipment X2 Generating sets, general electric lighting
  15. Jim be careful disconnecting the connector from the thermometer head as it is easy to find yourself undoing the connector internals. Also check that the screened cable rests above the distributor heat shield if the cable is under the heat shield it can get cooked by the exhaust manifolds. Also check the instrument panel end for the two cables to it are marked R1 NEG and R2 TEMP. The current flow through the circuit is about 40ma. The resistance of the thermometer is something like 180 ohms (depending on temperature!) I think.
  16. Jim if it reads maximum it is open circuit somewhere. A likely place is the connector to the thermometer head or the wires inside.
  17. Steve I can't do anything with that number I'm afraid. I have two discs of part numbers & sometimes bits of a part number can be picked out. But they only run on XP & the old PC is packed away in storage for now. But Z1 seems strange for this item, without knowing its intended application I can't think what the most likely VAOS Section would otherwise be.
  18. Steve XA & X6 make no sense. The dominant Section is the first one Z1, subsections Z1/ZA are not uncommon but my VAOS Z1 is not early enough to pick up 0535.
  19. VAOS Section Z1 Wireless sets & associated stores. Can't think that it is VAOS Section X4 as that is nuclear lamps. Perhaps X4 is the quantity?
  20. You could even pay £132 for a copy http://www.bookfinder.com/search/?st=re&ac=pg&qi=PTyGy5N6GUEcKj2m7SoQ8GbQAOI_1460646123_1:300:573:1:0&bq=author%3Dbob%2520morrison%26title%3Dbritish%2520land%2520rovers%2520in%2520the%2520gulf
  21. Steve it's quite satisfying untangling part numbers, nearly as good as deciphering the codes in the printer's imprint in military publications
  22. Steve you have given me the NIIN 127-6737 so that can be reconstructed to give the NSN 5120-99-127-6737 Of course the DMC is F1 This corresponds to: Socket set, socket spanner, metric, 1/2in sq drive Comprising: 11 sockets, sizes 11mm to 21mm A/F
  23. Well this COSA Section F1 is 215 pages & it is all NSNs, no VAOS numbers to cross relate. If you tell me the full complement with exact sizes & whether the box is metal or wood, I might spot a look a like socket set section.
  24. No problem Steve. FA17530 Socket, midget, sets "A" FA17340 not listed but this is Royal Signals publication & it just happens not to be listed in any of their various tool kits.
  25. I couldn't follow any of that but I did look in the museum gallery. I see there is a Husqvarna sewing machine and I thought they only made chainsaws! What is the motivation for the closure, financial or political?
