  1. welcome mate, whats your location? Jim
  2. Hi, Incase anyone mighht be interested here is my completed experiment of making a set-up to tow my ferret, single handed in the event of a breakdown near to home. Of course, all the hard work ensures it will never have to be used :-D. Tested it in the field and it seems to follow the tractor fine. Although I would never tow it any distance and even then at a low speed what are the expert's opinions on doing this, obviously with the gearbox and the transfer box BOTH being in neutral? Thanks
  3. Thanks men to all helpers . Been v busy today and only now got onto computer!! I shall get some pics tomorrow evening and post them. Just one thing, the lead from the headset has a 7 pin plug which goes into a socket containing the press the speak thing, then another 5 foot or so length of lead terminating in another 7 pin plug which goes correctly into a socket of the gold coloured ANR comm box. Anyone in the north/west yorkshire area into these things??? Cheers, Jim.
  4. Terry, thanks for your reply. Interesting that you just use the ANR stand alone as ear defenders. I'm going to get a couple of the dome mirrors, thanks, Jim.
  5. Hi Andy, Thanks for your reply. No, not yet unsure how to set them up, how do they work?, I've put the helmet on and they seem pretty good just as ear defenders, (before their plugged in). I notice that on the side of the muffs their is a slider, which goes from 'open' to 'closed'. I wonder which is which, suppose I need to have a play! Thanks again, jim.
  6. Hi Dave, Thanks, that good advice, I have a pair of AVF helmets with headsets, really big ones so will have to try them out sometime. The mirror tip sounds a good idea, which I will follow up on. thanks again Jim
  7. Hi, I'm new to the joys of a roadworthy ferret and wondered what others do about the issue of the NOISE inside the thing when its on full song? I've just used ear defenders, fairly small ones so far and they don't really get on up of the noise. I have a full clansman ANR system which I haven't rigged up yet. Would this trump ear defender's or is its only advantage the intercom one? Cheers jim
  8. Hi, This came with a load of specific Daimler Ferret parts. It has two small metal rollers and two removable wheels. Any thoughts pls? Jim
  9. Hi Howard, Great to have another ferriter on board. Would be good to know where abouts you are? Didn't know they made mk1's as late as 63'! Jim
  10. Nope, no difference, both are ultra low sulphur now, it used to be the case that red had a higher sulphur content. Any tractor engine in good condition shouldn't smoke, if its worn or the timings out etc, its going to smoke whatever its running on!
  11. Thanks Ferretfixer, I'm working on how to get it down to you . Cheers Jim
  12. Google 'stripping a Browning 30. cal' and you will get a few results including useful youtube videos. I seems fairly doable, but only as long as you can fully pull the bolt back and retain it in that position. With mine the bolt is stuck and therefore I need it looking at by someone who knows these weapons. Cheers Jim
  13. No worries Chris, I'm not going there . Still stuck though, its deffo jammed. Might have a look on the forum you mentioned . Cheers Jim
  14. Thanks ferretfixer, I will have a try and report back. Cheers Jim
  15. Hi, I have a browning 30 cal, deactivated 1989. I cannot pull the bolt back. When I have lifted the top lid up I can see the bolt moves about 1mm before stopping dead. I assume it ought to cock and dry fire but the trigger is also stuck. I don't think the bolt is seized because it does freely move about 1mm. Tried everything and I'm still stumped, have anybody got any ideas as to the problem?? Thanks in advance, Jim
  16. Thanks all, wanted to trace him for his ferret spares. Great forum members as usual . Cheers Jim
  17. Hi, I would like to buy this please, PM sent. Jim
  18. Hi, Know its a long shot but here goes! A while back a guy advertised on milweb his ferret and spares for sale. Remember he was based in Nottingham but unfortunately lost with phone number. Anyone know him? Regards Jim
  19. Thanks Richard, your words are encouraging me to at least believe I'm on the right path! Do the 4 small set screws need to be off? I've got a bit of movement, enough to see the 2 shims sandwiched between a pair of bronze rings. Should I praise were the large o ring is? Cheers Jim
  20. I have now removed the suspension spring and the manual says to 'pull the inner tracta joint out of the bevel box housing', only thing is its not for budging!! I'm at a loss and wondering if I'm missing something. To be clear, I've got the inner tracta housing flange and the sliding sleeve exposed, I;ve also removed the 4 small screws around the bevel box housing. If anyone has experience of getting to a damaged inner tracta (joint) I would be most grateful to learn . Thanks Jim
  21. Hi All, I have a lack of drive to a rear wheel. Props ok so decided to pull the wheel station off and identified the inner tracta shaft happily rotates by hand whilst transfer box in gear. I assume this means either inner tracta joint broken or blow bevel gears? the oil is fine, a bit black but smooth and no obvious particles of metel! The suspension spring and the upper suspension strut are thwarting any further removal and I was wondering how to proceed...cautious because of the big spring! Any tips gratefully received. Also, I've noticed the coupling sleeve appears to be held in place by what looks like a pair of rivits, anyone know how best to remove these in order to slide the sleeve off? Thanks Jim
  22. Thanks all, The ferret I have has a padded butt holder on the left, underneath the ignition and a padded barrel holder roughly adjacent to the drivers seat base, fastened onto the left prop cover. Reckon it must be for a slim barrelled weapon, maybe an SLR? Cheers Jim
  23. Hi, So, is that what should hang from the hooks behind the gunner in a ferret? What gun did the driver have? Cheers Jim
  24. Hi, When I start up the ferret, put the forward/reverse lever in the middle I obviously don't get any drive. Attempt to move the lever either forwards or back and it clunks into mech. Does this not prove that when its in the middle, ie neutral its not connected to the gearbox and thus when towing only the transfer box is going round, which I thought was ok since its still being lubed by splash as has been mentioned before, or am I missing something? Thanks to all for their input. Jim
  25. Hello, Hoping that some one might to able to help with this. For piece of mind (in the event of a localish breakdown), I would like to fabricate an A-frame towing drawbar for the ferret, similar to the one's used by jeeps. It has been mentioned before that towing may damage the gearbox or transfer box. If the transfer box is in neutral, would that result in the rotating wheels, (whilst been towed) not turning the gearbox at all? If so, then its only the bearings/gears in the TB which are at risk. Looking at the manuals the TB does not appear to have an input shaft driven oil pump so I assume everything in the TB is lubed by splash, or am I wrong? If everything is in neutral is the fluid flywheel safe being towed? Would only be towed by a farm tractor so not fast. Thanks Jim
