  1. Hi Martin, Glad to see it has gone to a good home. I've got a copy of an earlier photo of your Scammell with the same bodywork but in different colours. If you pm me your e-mail address I'll forward them to you. If you need any parts to repair the engine let me know. I've got the remains of a Gardner 6LW with a fair number of useful bits. If you ever need a hand working on it my brother is based in Ostwaldtwistle and I'm sure would be happy to come over and help out if he can. He also plays with Landrovers. Cheers Ed
  2. Thank you very much Neils. That should make my life a lot easier! Thanks Ed
  3. Hi all, I'm starting work on my Pioneer gun tractor and will soon need to paint some of the parts. My gun tractor was built in 1938 and I would like to paint it in the colours it would have originally been in. I know that it would have been a gloss green but have no idea shade etc..... and whether it is the same as the post war colours etc..... Can anyone help with what the colour should be and any recommendations for suppliers. Thanks Ed
  4. He sold it a year or two ago and one of the forum members now owns it. It was fitted with a rolls royce engine which I think had a crack in the block. Plan was to change it back to Gardner 6LW I think. Ed
  5. Thanks Niels. Will make up some templates and try them in my two. I know a couple of friendly wood yards so should be able to get them made with correct width planks. Once I've looked into it I'll see about getting a few sets done if anyone else needs some. Thanks Ed
  6. Hi all, Can anyone tell me what size and type planks the pioneer cab floor should have. Also what shape the floor should be. My two pioneers have no cab floor left at all which makes working in them fun! Also I am in need of photos, drawings etc.... of a gun tractor rear floor. Mine has had bits cut out and none of the original floor is in place. Alternatively if there is a gun tractor not too far away that I could look at and take measurements. Cheers Ed
  7. Richard, I haven't done this job on the Scammell but have had to do similar things on the Landrovers. One method to remove really stubborn ones was to wind the load on as high as possible then spray with release/penetrating fluid. Then try giving the drum a few taps with a sledge. If that doesn't work leave it under load for a few days giving it a spray of release fluid every couple of days. Then try tightening again. Ed
  8. Hi all, Does anyone have a list of the equipment that a recovery and a gun tractor should carry? As mine have no kit at all I should probably start keeping an eye out out for all of it! :-D Cheers Ed
  9. Superb to see that the Scammell has finally found a good home and will be used. If you need any parts or information then I am sure that one of the Pioneer owners on here will be able to help. If you have the chassis number I can give you the date & contract it was ordered on also it's original military H number. Cheers Ed
  10. Hi, Welcome to HMVF. I've been trying to put together a database of Unipowers. I'm guessing by your username that you are lucky enough to have one. If you wouldn't mind could you send me a few details about yours? I own the yellow ex BAA & ex RAF Unipower Forester that you can see at the end of the Unipower thread. Cheers Ed
  11. Could you post up a copy of the advert? I'd heard that there had been a for sale advert but never managed to track it down. Thanks Ed
  12. Hi Madrat, I think that is Jerry's one. I'm sure he'll be along at some point to confirm. A number of Pioneer's made it back from Dunkirk including one of the first 4 TRMU20's (Snow White). Would like to find out what happened with my gun tractor as being 1938 I would imagine there is a good chance she made it to France and at some point back again. Ed
  13. The Scammell without bodywork is the 2nd prototype gun tractor. Ordered end of 1935 and the body ordered later. The first gun tractor is the one I would really like, petrol engine 6x6 built in 1928, the first Pioneer in service. The 4x4 pioneer was a prototype for the Royal Navy. It started off with a petrol engine but was re-engined in showmans use with a Gardner diesel. I've got a later photo of it somewhere with fixed front bodywork. It is rumoured to still exist and hopefully it will survive. The wrecked one with the German soldier sitting on it is an early one with the large headlights and sidelights. I thinik the photo is at Dunkirk. Cheers Ed
  14. Perfectly timed question, I've been looking into information for my two Pioneers and can probably answer your queries. The army introduced the 2 number, 2 letter, 2 number system in 1949. Before that the Scammell would have had an H number and would have had a civvy registration number. The photos of Snow White (very early TRMU20) show it in France & North Africa with a civvy registration plate on the front. Very unusual to find but possible. I have a link at work to a site which might be able to help check. The TRMU30's were used extensively in Africa and would still have been used going into Europe. There were never enough to meet demand. Some Scammell Pioneers were made for civilian use during this time but not sure what contracts they would have been on. Would be interested to see any photos and info on the one you are looking at. Cheers Ed
  15. It's an TRMU30 from contract S1887, 15th December 1942, quantity of 178. Chassis numbers 5025-5202, H5306569-5306746 HTH Ed
  16. I have got two Scammell Pioneers and I would like to try and find out their military histories. I am after a few pointers as to where the best place to start is. The details I have of the two are below: The first is a 1944 SV2S Recovery and had the military reg 15RD62, chassis no. 5961 and was rebuilt by REME (B136?) October 1950. The second and hopefully the more interesting one is a 1938 R100 Gun Tractor and had the military reg 12RD69, chassis no. 2505 and was rebuilt by REME (B136?) December 1950. Best regards Ed
  17. Do you know what year this one is? Has a few features that make me think it is a pre-war one. Would really like to have a look at it if it is. Mine is 1938 and there are quite a few detail differences that I need some information on. Thanks Ed
  18. Always open to questions. I'm not as strong on the interaction with the engine as DAF, Volvo etc.... look after most of that but can answer a fair amount. Anything on wear of the injectors, how bio-diesel affects them etc........ Also a little bit on after treatment. My area of expertise is electronic unit injectors (EUI's) and electronic unit pumps (EUP's) from about the last 10-15 years. Plus now doing common rail. Ed
  19. I'm a Lead development engineer for diesel fuel injection (FIE) systems for trucks. I was responsible for all of the FIE on the first Paccar engine in the states in 2010 and have also looked after ongoing development work for the DAF Euro 4 & 5 11 & 13 litre engines. Also involved with Volvo Euro 6 systems and other advanced systems. I must stress though that I am a mechanical engineer not electronic or software. So I don't do anything to do with ECU's!:nut: Ed
  20. Both the Scammell and the Diamond T would have towed a plant trailer. They both have NATO style towing jaws at the back. For a closer look at a Diamond T you can have a look at the restoration thread for Adrian Mason's one: http://hmvf.co.uk/forumvb/showthread.php?9045-Diamond-T-980 Regards Ed
  21. I pay £25 per month for undercover for one of mine but that is very cheap. My Scammell's cost £70 a month with one undercover and one outside. I know someone who stores vehicles in Frimley, I could enquire if there is any more storage available there if you want? Cheers Ed
  22. Good to see that Thor is staying on hmvf. I was down at Ian's last week to pick up a couple of spare parts for my Scammell's and he mentioned that it was sold and off to new home soon. Good luck with the trip home and hope to see it out at a few shows. Regards Ed
  23. Hi Mark, Would be very interested in seeing your gun tractor, where abouts in the country are you? The Scammell in the radiator was originally only fitted to early ones and during world war 2 it was deleted due to the extra work needed to do it. As Mark says a lot were rebuilt after the war and the parts got muddled up. My gun tractor is 1938 and should have Scammell in the radiator but doesn't. It has a rebuild plate from the early 1950's. Cheers Ed
  24. We have 4 Landrovers at the moment, 2a Lightweight, 1983 110, 1960 series 2 and 1961 series 2 prototype. The series 2's are all under restoration/waiting at the moment and the 110 is the workhorse. The 110 often has little things go wrong - electrics etc... However not once has it ever let us down. Including doing a few stunts that it's not designed for. That is what makes me keep going back to them. Little bits will go wrong but the big stuff lasts. That and the fact it is still one of the few things that can tow 3.5 tons legally and go across a muddy field. Also parts are incredibly cheap and easy to get. Ed
  25. Don't worry the tracks are going to a very good home! Will post photos once I have picked them up. Ed
