The RAF gains the first officially verified Airspeed record for a jet plane when Group Captain H J Wilson flies A Gloster Meteor IV at 606 mph. The event Happened at Herne Bay. The Aircraft was completely standard, powered by two 3,500 lb thrust Rolls Royce Derwent V turbojets.

 

The course of 3 kilometers to be covered four times starting opposite the Miramar Hotel on the East Cliffs along to the Reculver Towers. Group captain H. J. Wilson's four runs were 604, 608, 602, & 611m.p.h. respectively.
