RecyMech
Hello All, I wonder if you can either help me with a query or at least point me in the right direction. I'm trying to get details of div signs & unit markings of maybe 3 or 4 Mk2 Stalwart users from say, 1970 to 75. Any users will do, not fussy. The reason will become clear in a moment, lower down this message. From my service days (REME) I can vaguely recall some of the unit markings I came into contact with, (QOH & 13/18RH) but nothing concrete enough for the task. Now the reason....I need to get a set of multiple unit marking decals made to include with the first in a series of 1/24th scale kits of post war British military vehicles. Stalwart is the first one (10" long & now approaching release) & later on Saracen, Saladin, Humber Pig & Ferret plus Bedford MK. If you're interested at all in the progress of the Stolly model thus far, & would like to see what I'm rambling on about, have a look at www.kitformservices.com & click on the TQ Section in the left menu....Stolly model is at the top of the linked page. Any recommended reading, sites, books, contacts, info, ideas, etc, would be more than welcome. Ideally I'm after something with either photographs or colour plates of the markings for particular user regiments & the correct placements. Thanks for your time, hope to hear from you if possible. Best regards. Howard Whitehead howard@kitformservices.fsnet.co.uk PS...I also see a good PIG following on here....going to need to crawl over & measure one next year along with a Saracen....any offers? ArtistsRifles
Hi Howard, glad you found us from the Yahoo Stolly group!! :) Unit markings, other than the ones you mention, for a Mk 2 would have been RA, RE, RCT, REME, RTR, RHA, Household Cavalry etc. Area markings would, I think, primarily have been BAOR plus the various training units in the UK. Any one else (Clive/Richard???) care to take a stab at this???? Edited October 21, 2008 by ArtistsRifles
AlienFTM
HMLCs were issued to line cavalry units as well as RTR and Household Cavalry. (Obviously, since the OP mentions 13/18H and QOH.) I'd be surprised if there wasn't establishment for them in mechanised infantry battalion OrBats too.
RecyMech
hi Neal, Alien, Been here for a while actually...just been monging around, reading & seeing what buttons to press. Thanks to both so far for input, I'm pretty ok on 'who' used them & I agree with your list....what I'm hoping is that someone will suggest is a publication that I can buy/rent/borrow/steal that will show me in colour the actual markings, for a given unit at a snapshot point in time. Or maybe there is'nt such a book ?? I recall when with QOH for example, (if memory serves) everything was marked up front & rear with 4 flashes or signs each end. 1) Union Jack, cause we were in BAOR at the time 2) Black rectangle with 7/2 on it in white (7armd brig 2 regiment of seniority) 3) Black rectangle with a white fern leaf, no idea what this was for 4) I think (only think) the red Gerboa dersert rat, a left over from QOH in WW2 Thats the kind of thing I'm after, for a few Stolly user regiments. Cheers....Howard
ArtistsRifles
Clive Elliott is probably your man for that then mate. Have you had a look in the section marked "Clives Corner"?? Clive had some info posted there on Post War British markings.....
RecyMech
Hi Neal Yep, spoke to Clive by e mail, offered me some help with the Pig when that one comes around. Have looked through Clives 'Post War Markings' info, re the current question, but it is more 'general' at present, giving a broad overview of markings. Whereas I need to get down to the 'next level' as it were & find out what the unit markings actually looked like (in colour) in order to make the decals. I see the 1/35th Accurate Armour Mk1 Stolly just has RAC markings & a Union Jack. Maybe they had the same problem ? Scoured the net last night for a couple of hours (again) hoping to drop on some obscure publication on the subject (Fly Fishing by JR Hartley stylee) but nothing yet. There is a series of books coming out which might help "British Army Markings 1903 to 2003"....trouble is it's a 4 parter & part 1 has only just been released. Shall keep scouring in the hope........ Howard.
ArtistsRifles
Have you tried the various Regimental museums Howard?? They often have a library of photo's from the differing era;s including the one we are talking about. Remember that the TA and the Regular Army were treated as seperate entities back then - TA vehicles were still DBG parade ground finish and carried the colourful square markings (unit/division) - i.e. 215 Sqdn RCT (VR) had the RCT blue and yellow square with a white bar over the top on the N/S of the vehicle (front view) and the black square with a tower on it for the London area on the offside back in those days. RecyMech
Hi Neal, Regiment museums are on my list of possible sources for info. Guess I was just hoping in vein that someone would recommend a book that had it all, ready sourced. I keep finding snippets in publications I already have...but most pictures tend to be black & white & only one end of the vehicle. Shall keep searching though. Howard. lowfat
Any luck with this ? My Stollies were in the Queens own Hussars, 13/18 Hussars, 1 Royal Horse Artillery ,Queens Royal Irish Hussars,25 field regiment R A and 2 field regt RA. All B.A.O.R from 1968 to 1991 when they were stuck off. they appear to have no markings.
ArtistsRifles
By 1991 the "One Army" system would have been well and truly in place (see Clive's article on vehicle markings) so all you would have had was the union jack, bridging plate and a number like 6/23 or SE/23 (as examples, no idea what the real ones were!!).
