antarmike
Following the totally unexpected attack by Doolittle's B25's against Mainland Japan, They decide to do the same trick. A tiny seaplane, a Uokosuka E14Y1, with folded wings, is carried in a small hanger attached to the decks of a Jap submarine. On September 9, 1942, Nobuo Fujita, a Chief Warrant Officer and pilot in the Japanese Imperial Navy, and his crew man, Petty Officer Shoji Okuda, surfaced in the Japanese submarine I-25 off the coast of Oregon near Brookings. Fujita flew southeast over the Oregon coast dropping incendiary bombs on Mount Emily, 10 miles northeast of Brookings. The hope was to start uncontrollable forest fires. The attack was unsuccesful. The Submarine was attacked but Fujita made another bombing run several weeks later, again with no success.
antarmike
Although Japan latter used the Jetstream to propell sophisticated Balloons carrying incenduaries to America , later in the war, these two attacks by Fujito are the only two raids by Aircraft, on the American mainland, in history.
