Jack Posted January 22, 2006 Share Posted January 22, 2006 Ok so it is time to put pen to paper and get this baby fired up 8) As some of you know I have posted a fair few pictures of my restoration and I will get them all in here so how...over a period of time 8) but I thought that I would start with what I have done today. I have been in about 58 minds as to what to do with regards to painting my GMC, do I spray it, but would have to learn how to do that first of all :shock: do I ask someone else to spray it 8) do I hand paint it or do I use a roller?! After changing my mind more times than I can remember I have gone for a roller finish, the reasons for this are many; 1. I can do it myself without having to learn a new skill 2. A very low cost method as no specialist equipment is needed 3. I have no equipment at all 4. I want to be out and about on the road as soon as I can and this method means that I can now just get on with it. 5. Rollers are very cheap So I have bought packs of 4" rollers of Ebay which are also known as radiator rollers as they are used to paint radiators. I also bought a new sander from B&Q as I blew that last one up PICTURE 1, I also blew this one up within 45 minutes. This sander cost me £25 and lasted 45 minutes, pathetic I thought and I do wonder why tools like this are sold as they are obviously poorly made but we do tend to accept it in today's society. Anyway, after an ear bashing by Oddball he sent to a place that sells quality tools for the professional (that will be me then) so 1 x Makita Sander ordered from Axminster tools at the cost if £79.99 delivered, it arrived on Friday PICTURE 2. Well I fired that up today and blimey, it does pay to buy quality tools and has made my life so much easier, lesson learnt! Picture 3 After using 60 grit and taking the wing back down to bare metal I then went back over with it with 240 grit. Once that was done I then used one tack rag and wiped the wing over and clean it up. Picture 4 & 5 I am using old water bottles as my paint pot as they are well ribbed and I thought this way you can measure your paint and thinners ratio but not knowing exactly what the ratio is or if indeed I needed to add thinners to the primer but thought that it would roll better being a bit thinner so the ratio was 3 ribs to 1. These spring water bottles are perfect for this job and many others so make sure you keep them in stock in your workshop but make sure that they are completely free of water for obvious reasons. Pictures 6 & 7. A 4" nail bent over in a vice and then fitted to my cordless drill...perfect paint stirrer! Picture 8 Just an image so you get the scale of the roller. I have been looking forward to having a crack with the roller method as I was very interested in seeing the results as so many people have mixed opinions. Pictures 9,10 & 11. This is the wet finish after using a roller. I was pleased with how quick and easy this method seem's to be but the I will have a better idea when the 1st coat has dried and I apply the second but if it is as good as it seems at the moment then I will be over the moon with it as this has been something that has daunted me ever since I bought the jimmy and I will most certainly use this method right over the rest of the truck. Tips and observations. 1. Make sure your roller is clean! 2. Do not use to much paint at once as it will run. 3.Once the roller are well soaked then they have tendency to come detached from the roller inner and fall off. 4. Have plenty of rollers in stock as you will use a good number of them. Costs. Rollers of Ebay £12 for 24 50 60grit again from Ebay £5 100 240grit from Ebay £8 I have only used 4 rollers and 4 of each sanding discs to do the following 2 x wings 3 x mud flaps 1 x battery box cover Over all very pleased with the outcome so far.........but will see what the finish is like when completely dry. Jack Posted March 18, 2006 Author Share Posted March 18, 2006 Ok, so I am a bit behind on my targets but will be bringing the GMC out of the barn and bringing it home today hopefully to get back on track! It hasn't been started since Nov 11 so I am hoping there won't be a problem but it is cold up in that barn. Also it is minus its wings, mud guards and its fuel tank so I am making a temp one out of my chainsaw fuel can and some tube and a milk filter, hopefully be back to give an update on bringing it back home 8) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Jack Posted March 18, 2006 Author Share Posted March 18, 2006 Well, it's home! 8) I am so pleased with this truck as it has been stood since Nov 11th. I connected the battery, wrigged up the fuel flicked the switch, kicked the starter button and after about 15 seconds up the engine went :shock: 8) and it sat there ticking over beautifully. Hand brake of, in to first and then home. Wonderful to hear, smell and drive it again 8) now I can get on with it. Have given it a good wash down and will now start to rub it down again and get painting by next weekend. One happy man. Coming out of hibernation. . Coming down the drive at home. . Hose down. . Jack Posted March 20, 2006 Author Share Posted March 20, 2006 Right, as promised (to myself) now that the GMC is in the drive then it is no sleep till Brooklyn. Will be rubbing it all down again :twisted: :shock: :cry: and get it right this time round. I have lots of little things which doesn't sopund a lot but minors soon turn into majors :cry: as I have a problem with the indicators at the moment but that can wait for now. Yesterday, I rubbed the bonnet down and then painted again with a roller. Really pleased with the finish but it has run on the side of the bonnet so I will rub that down again and get it right 8) A lot of rot underneath the bonnet. . Rubbed down . . Jack Posted March 25, 2006 Author Share Posted March 25, 2006 Right, as always, having to play the hand that you have been dealt, I have started to paint the bits and pieces in the garage as it is still raining outside and I can't do the truck :cry: Having some advice from Oddball this morning he reckoned the best way forward was to suck it and see with regards to thinning the paint. So I have used it straight out of the tin with the roller, it goes on pretty think but the finish is looking good but will know more when it has dried. It is a wonderful paint to paint with and the rolling method seems to working a treat 8) Oddball is dropping by tomorrow so I will see what he has to say about it :shock: Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Jack Posted March 26, 2006 Author Share Posted March 26, 2006 Went and had a look at the finished result of my painting yesterday with my new GREEN paint and have a look at the results below and see what you think. The paint was straight out of the tin and I didn't thin it. I am very pleased with the roller finish and there any runs in the work at all 8) Oddball dropped in for coffee and he gave it the nod, so I am happy with that!! Also start and 'indoor' job today seeing as it is STILL raining :twisted: .
