Grandpa's time in 96 Mobile Workshops IEME - Vehicles to ID

My grandpa was a WO2 and served in 96 Mobile Workshops Company IEME from sometime after 1944 to June 1947. I have requested his service record, but know this much from his discharge papers.

I have around 300~400 small black and white images of his time in what is now Pakistan but then known as the North West Frontier of India. They are in good condition but are all curved from storage...scanning them will take some time.

He photographed what was important; mostly people, landscapes and the local life. Its a fascinating glimpse at times into what life was like there. Many photos are annotated on the reverse with place names but few contain an ID as to who was in the photo.

I could do with some help with any ID of the vehicles.

First is my grandfather in front of a Universal Carrier. That one is easy.

This one is entitled "Hangu to Thal escort". But what vehicles?

This one titled " 6. D.C.O Lancers Humber A/C accident Bannu Rd Nov. 1946". Any idea who the 6 D.C.O Lancers are/were? Grandpa is standing 2nd from right.

Hope this piques the interest! More to follow.

Hi @SimonBrown

Thanks for the pictures, will be pleased to see more.

I'm rubbish at vehicle identification, but I can tell you 6 DCO Lancers were 6th Duke of Cumberland's Own Lancers (Watsons Horse), who still exist in Pakistan today as 6th Lancers.

Second photo is a Dodge Weapon's Carrier of some flavour.

Best Regards,

Adrian

"Hangu to Thal escort" Looks like a  Armoured Carrier, Wheeled, Indian Pattern (ACV-IP), known also as Indian Pattern Carrier .

More info: http://www.mapleleafup.net/forums/showthread.php?t=202

Behind the Indian AC is a Canadian Military Pattern (CMP)  truck. Many thousands of CMPs were assembled across the Commonwealth, many of them had locally manufactured bodywork fitted and some were used as the basis for Armoured Cars as in India.

Looks like a WC52 Dodge Weapons Carrier - USA origin and these were made in very large numbers -  the next size up from a Jeep.
