Nick Johns
no clutch brake , just good old crash gearbox, ..GMC's have a nice gearbox to use compared to some others of the period, just practise take gear changes slow to start with Edited October 30, 2019 by Nick Johns

Pete Ashby
Good advice from Nick as he says the GM box is one of the better types of the period only surpassed by the Bedford box on the QL range to my mind. First to second is a long change you may not need to start off in first depending on road conditions of course, after that it's fairly snappy once you get used to the unusual gate pattern, forth to over drive fifth being a comparatively fast change up. Coming down the box takes some practice the trick here on inclines is to come out of fifth before the engine starts to labour unduly or you'll find that you quickly run out of puff in fourth and will have to shed road speed to get into third then you will have to sit there foot hard down until you get to a flat section or the top of the hill changing up on an incline is not really an option if you need second for a steep incline then that's it until you reach the top sit back and take int he view or read a chapter of your favorite book . Changing down on the flat is standard double de clutch stuff best done with the power train under load by which I mean if the truck is coasting let the road speed fall off until it's right for the next lower gear then just ease the power back on for a second then a quick double de clutch change down to get this right requires some degree of forward thinking in terms of judging distances from junctions turns etc and is a matter of practice, the problem occurs when some idiot in a modern car cuts you up or stops with his swanky power brakes right in front of you we all grate the box and our teeth in these circumstances . I'm telling you to suck eggs here, but obviously never be tempted to dead stick (transmission in neutral) on down hill grades it can be a first class ticket to the morgue. Take Nicks advice, take things slowly until you get used to your new truck, how it drives and how to handle it and above all enjoy the experience.
