gas 44
Hi i have a small band of MV owners would like to visit some wartime sites around Suffolk?Norfolk,I'm thinking airfields. I just need some one in that area that could give some advice as to what to see and where to visit. looking at next year over a weekend, we will drive vehicles and B&B whilst there. ANY help would very welcome. Thanks
Adrian Barrell
Well, there is one about every 10 miles or so in Suffolk and Norfolk, a few having museums. There are other things with a WW2 history that are not aviation related to see too, if you know where to look!
Jessie The Jeep
Remember that many of the old airfields are private property, so those with better access are going to be the ones with museums. 100th BG Museum - Thorpe Abbotts 493rd BG Museum - Debach 448th BG Museum - Seething 390th BG Museum - Parham Norfolk & Suffolk Aviation Museum - Near Bungay airfield to name a few
g0ozs
Also consider RAF Foxhall Heath (a WW2 RAF wireless site now the home of the Suffolk Aviation Heritage Society) and Landguard Fort / Felixstowe Museum (a WW1 and 2 coast defence battery) - there is also a radar museum at Bawdsey, site of the first operational Chain Home set and later an RAF Bloodhound missile site Iain
Tugger
Further to the above replies , here are some links to some airbases that have museums attached Suffolk http://www.bcwm.org.uk/ Bentwaters, Now a cold war museum but a great museum with some static jet exhibits and a fantastic bunker control room museum http://www.493bgdebach.co.uk/ Debach airfield http://www.mhas.org.uk/ Martlesham http://www.parhamairfieldmuseum.co.uk/ Parham https://www.bawdseyradar.org.uk/ and as mentioned before Bawdsey radar. South Norfolk http://www.aviationmuseum.net/ RAF Flixton (Bungay) http://www.453museum.com/ Old Buckenham (museum recently opened in 2016) That is I'm sure by no means an exhaustive list and no doubt others here can add sites without museums that have some sort of permissive access. fire ball red
Hi gas 44, you might like to check out www.95thbg-horham.com , I am a committee member at this museum. Next year we will be holding a special anniversary over the weekend of 16th and 17th June 2018, to celebrate the arrival of the 95th Bomb Group to Horham in 1943. Hoping for some guests from the States, possible road run to places of interest, 40s dance on Saturday etc, the date is firm but events are to be finalized. The following weekend will be the popular Americana Day with a dance on the Saturday night and Cars etc on Sunday. Open days start on last Sunday of the month from April to October, but always happy to open up out side these times. All so there is a nice museum at Hardwick, various crash Memorials dotted about the area. Happy to help where I can. Quentin.
