andy brown
Sorry for the delay in getting back to this obviously thorny subject matter .. Answers to some of your comments and questions :- Firstly I have never been in reciept of why there was burial nor I suspect was my father any the wiser as to the reasons behind his task .I think I should deal with the comments and questions that related to my father if only to protect his memory as best I can ,now there is no reason that I shoul;d enter into this apart from a gesture of good will , I never asked a direct question as the likelyhood of anyone out there still being around in sound mind from the period in question who may have been directly involved in this is highly unlikely but you never know unless you ask ..which I did .. Part 3. (no continuity) - to avoid answering queries in full ??? You know where they are , possibly they are the very self & same tanks ? If they are then there is effective means of establishing proof. The A1073 between Spalding and Crowland sits on top of a very high bank. Because the soil is mainly silt, the banking was made stronger, with X WW2 tanks. I have seen photos of these tanks, in some photos, an old timer showed me many years ago, so that myth, is a true story, and not a myth. Reason , steel reinforcement of a road embankment - supposedly (witnessed by old-timer who apparently has / had photographic evidence). So , what would there be to hide by removal of manufacturers plates ? - tanks under a public highway of course if IF SOURCE. http://forum.keypublishing.com/showthread.php?129369-Not-Spitfires-but-buried-U-Boat-and-whatever-else/page2
Pete Ashby
Thank you Andy for taking the time to come back with answers, your Father certainly saw a lot of action. Has the information you supplied come from his pay book entries or his service record ? if you don't have his service record I would urge you to apply for it, that in conjunction with his pay book entries will give a full picture of his service. With the information you already have you could look for his unit's war diaries again very well worth doing The relevant point in relation to your request for information regarding the post war burying of tanks and your Father's involvement is the last note from your Father's service history namely that he moved to class Z reserve (as indeed all service men did on demob). One of the requirements especially for men with trade or specialist skills was periodic recall of 15 day duration 'training and refresher' exercises. Ex service men were eligible for this up to the age I believe of 45 although there seems some confusion as to the exact age; as an aside I can remember my Father getting his notification of release from class Z and him saying he was going to frame it. I am wondering if your Father was possibly recalled under the class Z scheme and as part of 'refresher' training given his service rank he oversaw and or took part in some form of camp clearance activity that involved burying scrap of some kind ? If you would like links for sources of unit diaries let me know Pete
ruxy
There is always the FOI request , and I suppose if a person could be bothered a follow up on the person making previous FOI , assuming they did not wangle a nom-de-plume I wonder if Mr Lee Rolf ever penetrated the MOD conspiracy ? He seems to be searching for a complete buried WW2 vehicle museum ! With County Council waste disposal responsibilities - this seems to open a environmental avenue of research - records kept , how about ground-water contamination ? https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/sheepcote_valley_vehicles_buried_2
