TechnicianJack
Hello, Just a question about a Land Rover FFR I saw that appeared to have an air conditioning unit on its roof. Looks a bit like a roof box for a car. I saw it at the national hamfest last year, and I was wondering whether that is something the military added, or whether it's an after market kit? I assume if it's military, it is designed more for cooling the radios than the operators! Anyone know? I've looked around on the internet, but haven't been able to find anything so far! Jack. Starfire
I don't know anything about a Land Rover kit, but I know that putting an AC in the Saracen is on my wish list. I'm planning to adapt a unit from a sleeper cab truck, probably mounted on the offisde wing and plumbed into the vent inlet.
Dougy FV432
They did fit air-con to landrovers in service. Have a look at this site of some specialist series 3s... http://www.cvrt.co.uk/racal/84KB11.html Dougy
Brewstop
30 Signals Regiment had AC mounted on their older SATCOM vehicles. On Op Essential Harvest / Op Bessimer in Macedonia 2001, when 16 Air Assault Brigade deployed to collect weapons from warring factions, the Brigade only had Wolf TUM and TUL but the 30 Sigs Land Rover was a 110 with Air Con. g0ozs
Jack I know of at least one satcom vehicle with aircon being reconstructed by an amateur in Lincolnshire - if the one you saw had a pedestal and sectional dish beside it, it would likely have been his Regards Iain
TechnicianJack
Thanks for all the information. I'm pretty sure the AC unit was the same type as the Series 3 had on the specialist vehicles website link. As for whether it was a satcom vehicle, I don't know. It was parked in the carpark, not set up as a display. I have seen a couple of pictures on the internet of those vehicles with the dish connectors on the hard top, but I can't remember if it had those. (I should have taken a photo of it!) Does anyone have information about the satcom stuff, or is it still in use by the military? Thanks, Jack.
Satcom501
Hi Jack It was fitted by racal as part of the VSC501 satcom kit. The land is mine. 73 de Gerald G7HNM

g0ozs
Jack Gerald's is the one I mentioned earlier in this thread - when I last saw it at W&P 2010 he had the dish stand and petals and was collecting the rest of the bits Gerald Good to see you posting here ! Satcom501
Hi Iain Will you be down at w & p this year? I will be there but not with Mike, going down with a load of friends all with land rovers. I will be over at the Muckleburgh Collection 31st may 1st June for the military show & at Colchester for the military tattoo in July. Jack I have some of the radio kit for inside the landy (always looking for the kit), at the moment I'm repainting the old girl back to her Gulf 1 looks for this year's shows. I'm looking for some lightweight desert canvas to make vent flap covers. The 1st. weekend of April I hope to be on air from RAF Barkston Heath for RAFARS AOTA (airfields on the air) weekend doing all the paperwork at the moment. Call will be GB0BA 73 de Gerald
TechnicianJack
That sounds interesting! Does any of the satellite equipment have any use, (such as amateur radio) or does it only work with military satellites that you're not allowed to access? Jack. g0ozs
Gerald Sorry for slow reply - I should be at W&P this year - probably a flying visit as the new location is 1/2 hour further south and I have moved 1/2 hour further North! Colchester or Muckleburgh are also possibilities Regards Iain 73 de G0OZS
