Ferry Pricing!

yes they are cheap but by the time you add up extra fuel and tolls plus the driving time it's not that different to the deals available now and again to Caen and Cherbourg from portsmouth. LD are not too bad to Le havre. Only about an hours drive the other side + tolls to St Lo.

PS if you dont mind going by "Trawler" (just my opinion of trans manche ferries. ex mediterranean booze cruisers) Newhaven to Dieppe is quite reasonable. But there is still the drive on the other side.

FERRIES

If you are driving from Europe, we recommend that you travel with Norfolk Line Ferries, with whom we have an excellent relationship. If you quote "Beltring/War and Peace" when you book with them (call (0870) 870 1020 for the UK office) you will be entitled to the unbeatable rate of £12/metre with up to 5 people in the vehicle, each way. You can book using this password all year round as well, whether popping over for a weekend, or coming to stay for several weeks...

Norfolk line is a good service too. A wee bit further to drive than Calais if heading to Normandy but their fare (at least for the last couple of years) were markedly cheaper than P&O/SeaFrance etc. from Dover. SpeedFerries are cheaper but those catamarans have limits on what they can carry as they always dock stern first so you basically load in a "U" - any vehicle with a large turning circle gives them problems and costs them time thus money. Aslo the facilities to relax on board a ship are better than the catamarans so if you've had a long trip to Dunkirk or are facing a long trip to Normandy I'd prefer the ship despite the extra travel time. We've tried both!!!!

Transmanche have got rid of the trawlers and replaced them with 2 brand new ships. They are also doing a Newhaven to Le Havre service. Check out the LD Lines website.
