Jessie The Jeep Posted February 14, 2007 Share Posted February 14, 2007 "Spirit Of '76" is my own Eastman A-2 and features a fictional B-17 name first used during my B-17's test flight stage. The figure is showing some signs of ageing, but the jacket has been worn virtually every day for the past seven years. The figure was adapted from a B-17 named "Carolina Moon". 38 mission symbols have been added in different colours representing missions flown. http://www.sacarr.co.uk/a2art/jackets/spirit.jpg[/img] ----- "Hang The Expense" was a 100th Bomb Group B-17G and is painted on an Eastman AN-J-4 Jacket . The figure was copied exactly as it appeared on the aircraft, but that alone did not fill out the back panel. The aircraft's tail was added as a background to compliment what would have otherwise been a very tall thin image. "Woody's War" is a fictional artwork of Woody Woodpecker holding a .50 Cal Browning Machine Gun surrounded by Flak bursts. The picture of the original artwork was too small to make out any detail so a picture of Snow White was found on the web and modified to resemble the original art. http://www.sacarr.co.uk/a2art/jackets/swhite.jpg[/img] ----- The "Thumper" artwork was from a B-29. The original featured the name inside a bomb which resembled a torpedo. The customer wanted a more conventional bomb which is shown here. The name was then moved to the shoulders. http://www.sacarr.co.uk/a2art/jackets/thump.jpg[/img] ----- "Flak Bait" was the most famous B-26 Marauder, operating with the 322nd Bomb Group. The aircraft flew 202 missions in Europe. The owner wanted the bomb changed to replicate a black & white picture he had showing the "200 Missions", and not just "200" as in another picture he had. The writing style looks like it was from that aircraft . I don't know if any other aircraft used the name, but it is highly likely. What paints are you using? I've used enamels and also more recently leather dye. The dye is flexible and resists cracking, the enamels tend to have a more dense pigment, but crack fairly quickly, depending on how soft the leather is. Bodge Deep Posted February 15, 2007 Share Posted February 15, 2007 Yes Steve I got the noseart from the 100BG site http://www.100thbg.com/spotlight/styling/pages/piclily.htm I chose this one as Lily is my daughters name & the plane was lost over Bremen on 8th Oct (my birthday)... seemed appropriate at the time :dunno: I used Acrylics which seem to be holding out okay with very little or no cracking. I stripped the leather with thinners to get the varnish off, hand painted it then sealed with a matt acrylic varnish. Its not a proper pattern jacket (as you can no doubt tell)... but if I'da paid serious wedge for it I wouldn't have dared to... as it was it cost a tenner from a car boot sale & the paints I already had:roll: I stencilled each bomb roughly to look as though they were added one at a time. But I copped out on the girl as i can't do figures so just made her a sillhouette against a moon... :whistle: The leather dye sounds good I might try that.
