Jessie The Jeep Posted February 14, 2007 Posted February 14, 2007 "Spirit Of '76" is my own Eastman A-2 and features a fictional B-17 name first used during my B-17's test flight stage. The figure is showing some signs of ageing, but the jacket has been worn virtually every day for the past seven years. The figure was adapted from a B-17 named "Carolina Moon". 38 mission symbols have been added in different colours representing missions flown. http://www.sacarr.co.uk/a2art/jackets/spirit.jpg[/img] ----- "Hang The Expense" was a 100th Bomb Group B-17G and is painted on an Eastman AN-J-4 Jacket . The figure was copied exactly as it appeared on the aircraft, but that alone did not fill out the back panel. The aircraft's tail was added as a background to compliment what would have otherwise been a very tall thin image. This jacket was part exchanged when I got too fat! http://www.sacarr.co.uk/a2art/jackets/hte.jpg[/img] ----- My new Aero Leather B-3 jacket has another version of the "Hang The Expense" name. This time I have taken the text as on the original B-17, added the 48 star flag as a backdrop and then the a B-17 in "HTE" markings to complete the design. http://www.sacarr.co.uk/a2art/jackets/hte3.jpg[/img] ----- This is Lynne's A-2. "Woody's War" is a fictional artwork of Woody Woodpecker holding a .50 Cal Browning Machine Gun surrounded by Flak bursts. Although fictional, the Woody character made his first appearance in 1940, and so qualifies as a period character. http://www.sacarr.co.uk/a2art/jackets/woody.jpg[/img] More shortly..... Quote
Jessie The Jeep Posted February 14, 2007 Posted February 14, 2007 Another girlies jacket. "Snow White" was a B-24 Liberator. The picture of the original artwork was too small to make out any detail so a picture of Snow White was found on the web and modified to resemble the original art. http://www.sacarr.co.uk/a2art/jackets/swhite.jpg[/img] ----- The "Thumper" artwork was from a B-29. The original featured the name inside a bomb which resembled a torpedo. The customer wanted a more conventional bomb which is shown here. The name was then moved to the shoulders. http://www.sacarr.co.uk/a2art/jackets/thump.jpg[/img] ----- "Flak Bait" was the most famous B-26 Marauder, operating with the 322nd Bomb Group. The aircraft flew 202 missions in Europe. The owner wanted the bomb changed to replicate a black & white picture he had showing the "200 Missions", and not just "200" as in another picture he had. The original aircraft is now at the Smithsonian Institute. http://www.sacarr.co.uk/a2art/jackets/fbait.jpg[/img] Quote
Jessie The Jeep Posted February 14, 2007 Posted February 14, 2007 "Hi Ho Silver" is a copy of a wartime A-2 flying jacket. The B-17 the jacket art is copied from was in the 91st Bomb Group based at Bassingborne. http://www.sacarr.co.uk/a2art/jackets/hihosilver.jpg[/img] ----- This jacket has the famous Leaping Tiger emblem of the American Volunteer Group, the "Flying Tigers". This was copied from an original wartime jacket. http://www.sacarr.co.uk/a2art/jackets/tiger2.jpg[/img] ----- "Woolaroc" is a jacket based on a 92nd BG B-17 lost during December 1943. One of the missing crewmen is honored on the back of the jacket. http://www.sacarr.co.uk/a2art/jackets/woolaroc.jpg[/img] ----- Other examples can be found HERE Steve Quote
Bodge Deep Posted February 14, 2007 Posted February 14, 2007 excellent stuff Steve http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l147/Bodge-Deep/jacket1.jpg[/img] My first attempt! Got an A2 type I'm going to try & ruin next! Quote
Enigma Posted February 14, 2007 Posted February 14, 2007 Stunning artwork Jessie!!! Bodge Deep, for a first time its very good, except for some details in the woman hard to improve. Quote
Jessie The Jeep Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 .....My first attempt! Got an A2 type I'm going to try & ruin next! "Picadilly Lily" was another 100th Bomb Group B-17. The writing style looks like it was from that aircraft . I don't know if any other aircraft used the name, but it is highly likely. What paints are you using? I've used enamels and also more recently leather dye. The dye is flexible and resists cracking, the enamels tend to have a more dense pigment, but crack fairly quickly, depending on how soft the leather is. I've also used a combination of both, giving an undercoat of dye and a top coat of enamels. Steve Quote
Bodge Deep Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 Yes Steve I got the noseart from the 100BG site http://www.100thbg.com/spotlight/styling/pages/piclily.htm I chose this one as Lily is my daughters name & the plane was lost over Bremen on 8th Oct (my birthday)... seemed appropriate at the time :dunno: I used Acrylics which seem to be holding out okay with very little or no cracking. I stripped the leather with thinners to get the varnish off, hand painted it then sealed with a matt acrylic varnish. Its not a proper pattern jacket (as you can no doubt tell)... but if I'da paid serious wedge for it I wouldn't have dared to... as it was it cost a tenner from a car boot sale & the paints I already had:roll: I stencilled each bomb roughly to look as though they were added one at a time. But I copped out on the girl as i can't do figures so just made her a sillhouette against a moon... The leather dye sounds good I might try that. Next one dosen't have any figures on so shouldn't be too scary :-D Quote
Jessie The Jeep Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 You should get some scraps of leather and practice with the dye by making squadron and group patches. Here's a few I've done over the years. The stuff I use is by Dylon, and is the Shoe and Accessory Colour. http://www.sacarr.co.uk/a2art/af/100bg.jpg[/img] http://www.sacarr.co.uk/a2art/af/534bs.jpg[/img] http://www.sacarr.co.uk/a2art/af/383fs.jpg[/img] http://www.sacarr.co.uk/a2art/af/500bs.jpg[/img] http://www.sacarr.co.uk/a2art/af/31tcs.jpg[/img] http://www.sacarr.co.uk/a2art/af/422nfs.jpg[/img] Steve Quote
Bodge Deep Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 Well my next question was gonna be... Got a 100BG patch for sale? Oh and a 351st Sqn? & How much I know my limits :-D Quote
Jessie The Jeep Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 I think the 100th museum sells 100th embroidered patches for about £5.00 or there abouts. Contact them here 100th Museum Steve Quote
Bodge Deep Posted February 18, 2007 Posted February 18, 2007 Newest attempt! http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l147/Bodge-Deep/1-1.jpg[/img] In keeping with the baby theme! Not based on real nose art just made up (though there were a couple of 'Milk Run's I beleive). Just liked the name (the Dodge bears this name too). Quote
Jessie The Jeep Posted February 19, 2007 Posted February 19, 2007 I think that's great!! Love the bombs dripping out of the bottle!!! Steve Quote
