simondema
Hi all I have the opportunity to buy 3 Austin Champ vehicles, which would be great for restoration or spare parts. I noticed on closer inspection of the vehicles that the engines are the Austin/Rolls Royce design, and not the straight RR design which was fitted to the earlier vehicles. Has anyone got any experience with such engines and are they any more troublesome than the straight RR built ones? Any information would be greatly appreciated. sirhc
I think they are pretty much all the Austin version, the RR ones are quite rare.
Nick Johns
Nearly all Champs will have the Austin manufactured engine painted the usual sky blue colour denoting a rebuilt replacement unit, production engines I think were light grey/blue? pretty reliable, the rare original early Rolls engines were painted black. Is that so? I thought even the original RR engines were painted in Sky Blue. Had no idea the RR ones were painted black. That's something new I learnt! That's something new I learnt! Thanks Yes I think Nick is correct. When you look through the various Humber 1 Ton publications the older it is the greater the chance of the B60 engine & ancillaries being black. Remember that being painted Sky Blue doesn't always mean it has be rebuilt it may merely have been "preserved" in accordance with EMER WORKSHOPS N 111 Chaps 1 & 2. simondema
I just realized that looking at the Champ I am buying here in Sydney, the engine is black. Looking at the photo I thought it was just dirty. It looks like it has one of the original engines. Simon
Nick Johns
Its all a long time ago when I was involved with Champs, best place for all Champ information is the Champ owners club, http://www.austinchamp.com/ Edited April 3, 2012 by Nick Johns
antar
There are in fact 3 Champ military engines 1 Rolls Royce built, originally painted black with cast alluminium rocker cover, with BSF /BSW threads, very rare 2 Rolls Royce built, originally painted blue with cast alluminium rocker cover, with UNF / UNC threads, quite rare 3 Austin built to Rolls Royce design, painted blue with pressed steel rocker cover, with UNF / UNC threads, quite common. The 2 latter rocker covers were interchangeable so to be absolutely sure you have a UNC/UNF Rolls built engine refer to engine serial number, the ACOC website will then advise. simondema
Thanks for the replies I have discovered that one of the Champs I am looking at has an engine which seems to have been fitted to a FFW vehicle, even though it's an Australian Cargo vehicle. How that engine (60085) ever ended up in this vehicle is a bit of a mystery. Regards Simon

Regards Simon I used to have a Champ, and the only engine diference between a Cargo and FFW engine is the Dynamo and it's oil pipes (the oil holes are blanked off on the cargo version). The actual engine is identical.
