Jessie The Jeep Posted January 9, 2012 Share Posted January 9, 2012 Does anyone know of a tank that was on display in South Shields several years ago, and if so, what was it? The location was around Highfield Road / T.A. Centre. A friend asked if I knew anything about it. He thought is was a Comet and thinks it was moved in the early 1990's. Meteor mark 4B Posted January 23, 2012 Share Posted January 23, 2012 Reply from an Old Comrade who lives that way: That comet stood outside of the Fort at Horsley Hill South Shields. ( About 1 mile from home ) The T.A centre was home to the Northumberland Hussars and other units. Have had many a new years eve party in that building in the background. I recall it being put onto a tank transporter, but can't remember it's final resting place. Hard to believe but it was never vandalised. Doug72 Posted April 9, 2020 Share Posted April 9, 2020 I live on the estate in South Shields that was built on the site of the TA camp. I believe the tank that stood in front of the TA building went to the Bovington TAnk Museum in Dorset, as it was the last surviving example.
