woa2
Just seen this in todays (Friday 21 Oct 2011) copy of the 'Metro' paper. "RUSSIA: A mobile artillery gun used as a World War 11 memorial has been stolen and replaced with a fake. Officials noticed the German Sturmgeschutz 111 Ausf D, kept near Moscow, had been switched after renovation work." Anyone know any more details?? Ted170
Not directly a theft, but a clever legal move. Here's what a Russian guy said about it on another forum: This affair was widely discussed in “tank circles” here in Russia. This company was obligated by the contract with local officials to restore the monument (not only the StuG bit marble panels etc.) for free, in exchange for the right to do whatever they want with this parts of the vehicle that do not influence monument’s appearance. They made the best use of the contract terms, the monument is looking excellent now – so it is completely wrong to say that something was stolen. Was it good or bad or it is just legal issue – is up to your personal opinion. This is how it looks now:
Tony B
Definitley an eye catching piece of work. What did the original look like?
Ted170
It looked the same, just in need of restoration. If that's a reproduction, these guys did very well! I'll quote the same person, from another forum, to show it Before and Now. Left is "before", right is "after" (hope links will work): Edited October 22, 2011 by Ted170
Tony B
I'd say they have done a first class job of restoration on it.
