Hello all,

After years of playing with landrovers I've finally progressed to a big green 4WD thing!

It's been fun so far, apart from having to buy a bigger set of spanners and wielding them very frequently!

I chose the truck based on my requirements. V8 (obviously :-D), 4X4, needs to be drivable on UK roads (not too big, not too slow) and ended up with this:

It's a Gaz 66 from 1972, Russian army radio truck.

The technology is old but interesting, it has CTIS, the engine electrics are fully shielded and it has a preheater on a petrol engine!

It is going to need a lot of TLC before it is truly usable, but it is tax exempt and at least it's all metric!

Cheers,

Andy

PS, As you can see I can't type! :)

Oh and Fesm_ndt, Landy madness is very common in the "Shire" :)

The 'Shire' quip is a bit humourous as we went down to buy some bits and I explained we had driven from Cambrdge, to Nottinghamshire down to Glouscestershire and were going back the same day.

I pronounced 'shire' (well how its spelt :red: ) or the locals described it more along the lines "you been watching to much of Lord of the Rings you daft Aussie prat". Nice part of UK, have to get back there, soon.

I forgot to say welcome before :-D

Thanks!

I guess the "shire" is mostly populated by small people with hairy feet, Gloucestershire is really "Gloster-sher " !

yep, although it was apparent I is an Aussie, it gave them months of laughs about it and although I was buying kit from them I was the butt of all jokes for a few hours. Nice blokes though.

Andy, so whats the plans on your new toy, any rebuild/s, modifications, should we be expecting a GAZ thread?

Can we get some more piccies, whats it handle like?

Plan is to make it a little more "drivable", probably to include an LPG conversion. It is a 4.2 V8 petrol and has 2 * 105ltr petrol tanks so I'll probably lose one for gas.

It vibrates badly at anything over 40MPH, though it should be capable of 60+, I need to check and balance just about evrything in the drivetrain. It has none of the radio kit in the back, just one set of original drawers left, so there's nothing to restore there! I'll kit it out to sleep in. The last owners started the job, though we'll probably change a lot of what they did anyway.

I've owned it for 3 months, only made one trip in it so far, it can be relied on to break down at every opportunity. Right now it has a flat tyre (and the CTIS compressor doesn't work), inoperative clutch hydraulics and won't start (seems to be a lack of petrol getting through). And I have to move it as the landlord where it is has taken offence...

Guess what I'll be doing this weekend!

I think I know what the petrol issue is, I might be able to get the clutch working temporarily and I'll have to remove the CTIS valve and pump the tyre up with a normal pump :(

Then it'll live in the street for a while, back where it was a few months ago:

Trying not to intimidate the neighbours!
