  2. Floyd's looking great, mate. You must be well pleased.
  3. Best start looking for a low loader now then!:rofl:
  4. Great videos Andy. Thanks for sharing 'em :-D
  5. Thanks Liam. I'll be having a look at it in the next week or so, so if I hit a snag I might well PM you. Much appreciated. Daz
  6. Thanks very much Liam and Peter. Very helpful advice. :-D
  7. Saw what I think was a Constructor heading east on the A30 at Indian Queens (yes, it's a real place :yay:!) west of Bodmin last night- anyone on here? It was blue. Would like to know if it's anyone local to me.
  8. The Explorer looks great Big Chris. Nice one!:-D
  9. Electrics are my worst subject so can someone help me please? The Explorer had no electrics as such when I bought it. We cobbled together some wires to enable us to start it up,(push button starter switch with no ignition and two battery leads running to starter and earth) but it would be useful if I could add to this to get it to charge its own batteries. It has an AEC diesel with alternator, negative earth system and runs two 12v batteries. I think that all I need to do is run an earth from the alternator to the chassis and a positive wire back to one of the positive battery terminals. Is this enough or should I include any fuses or control boxes etc. Any advice would be appreciated as the Meadows petrol wiring manual is like reading chinese for me and I don't want it all to go up in smoke :nono: Thanks Daz
  10.:rofl: And you still have to wonder why they rust so well!
  11. My advice after having several 2.25 diesels is to go the overdrive route. As Mike says, you don't have to use it. I used a 109 series 3 with a heavy box section roofrack to do many thousands of miles and the overdrive does give a small reduction in damage to your hearing and sanity. The only times when I found it lacking (due to wind resistance) was in strong headwinds and when overtaking artics, due to the buffeting of deflected wind coming off them, needing a chage back to direct drive. Make sure you get a good one as they're becoming difficult to find. Might I suggest freewheel hubs as a concession to help reduce the amount of mechanical stuff an already gutless engine has to pull.... Ashcrofts do a good high ratio conversion for the series land rover, but I think the 2.25 diesel would struggle. You just have to accept it for what it is! If originality is not important, the 2.5 diesel from 90's and 110s is a straightforward conversion, but many of these are now pretty tired too.
  12. At least you'll be well practiced with a paintbrush now for Daisy's DBG overcoat! :-D
  13. This will open up a can of worms I'm sure, but I think I'm right in saying that you can tow a living wagon on yor car licence as long as it only has personal effects in it and not a load
  14. Sounds like you've got plenty to keep you busy Rob. No easy way round that is there? :nono: At least some things remain constant! :-D
  15. Sorry mate have to give W&P a miss and only do GDSF this year. Hope you and |floyd have a trouble free trip though (sure you will). Must be a great feeling to get him back on the road and enjoy driving him around. |Fixing stuff has it's good points, but is never as good as having a drive is it? :-D:-D:-D:drive::drive::drive:
  16. Blimey! That's an interesting variation on a theme!
  17. I think this is a great thread. All the comments are interesting, but I find the points of CW, Loggydriver and Antarmike particularly so. I think the varied replies here go a long way to illustrate the initial point. We are all attracted to our own area of the MV/Re-enactment/Restoration movement and for most of us the different areas will sometimes overlap. Personally, I am happy to have prevented another historic vehicle going to the scrapper or decaying in a hedge. I hope to take it to shows eventually, but it will not be as it was when in service, soI probably won't bother dressing up in correct military garb to accompany the lorry. I have a fairly relaxed view about things, but think that if people want to re-enact a period or particular part of the services, that's fine by me. They obviously enjoy doing that as much as I enjoy playing with the Explorer and although I don't fully understand WHY someone would want to spend the weekend laying in a ditch in authentic dress, I don't feel I should think they are 'odd' in any way. I can understand CW and Loggydriver's concerns about people become attched to a uniform they have never worn and are never likely to, as I think the whole ethos of the movement should be about enjoyment and fun with like-minded folk, not about trying to make others think you are something you are not. As for the concerns about re-enacting as German forces, well it's all a part of our history and I think it would be odd to just sweep it under the carpet, although I absolutely understand the feelings of those who have been affected by the actions of those other forces in the past. I'd love to hear some more views on this.
  18. Great videos Croc. Thanks for posting.
  19. Hi Thor- I'll be camping for the weekend at Dorset, so I hope I'll see you there too. Unfortunately my Thor won't be ready this year/decade (I can feel a bit of a ribbing from Mr Fowler coming on...) but it will be nice to see an Explorer in just one piece. Perhaps have time for a beer? Re the TL12 manual- this is a longshot, but try Parry Davis who keeps all the manuals for the Scammell Register. parrydavis@aol.com. Cheers mate. BTW your Thor looks fantastic after the paintjob and panelwork. Nice one! :-D
  20. Thanks Gritineye. the blue Pioneer looks like a particularly useful bit of kit. :-D
