  1. The more I think about it the more I smell a rat:-(
  2. Link to some useful info on using UJs at excessive angles as per a previous discussion. http://www.tpub.com/content/construction/14273/css/14273_179.htm Note how at 30 degrees and 1000rpm the heavy propshaft has to be accelerated to about 1150rpm and then slowed to about 850rpm twice every revolution, which saps power and causes heavy wear of the UJs.
  3. Interesting site about a subject I knew nothing about, the storage of steam locos to cope with the aftermath of a nuclear strike. http://www.willys-mb.co.uk/strategic-reserve.htm
  4. Mike, just had a long chat with an old (86) pal of mine who worked at Crossley between 1948 and 1957. He was a bodybuilder and mainly employed on double decker bodies, but also worked on a number of Matadors that came in as running chassis cowls (as opposed to chassis cabs) for the cab and rear bodies to be constructed. He doesn't remember the numbers involved but referred to them as 'a fair old number'
  5. Don't see the problem, he was wearing a hard hat, high vis vest, steel toe boots and a safety harness:)
  6. The winch drum is driven by a vertical shaft In both cases. The vertical shaft is driven by a horizontal shaft in both cases. The length of cable is irrelevant, and in any case the ploughing engine would be unlikely to use a wire rope designed for a SWL of (18tons)?, so could fit far more on the drum. I would agree with the amount of mythology surrounding Watford products:)
  7. Derived as in 'based on'. As you can see the Scammell (Wild) winch bears no resemblance whatsoever to one on a ploughing engine:shocked: http://flickr.com/photos/89686959@N00/2890172127/
  8. The same article suggests that the basic design was derived from a Czech ploughing winch as fitted under the boilers of steam ploughing engines.
  9. Found the photo I as thinking of - 'Breakdown' p 52. It seems to have the normal gun tractor bodywork but with a set forward front axle.
  10. Got a brand spanking new one if needed.
  11. Couldn't agree with you more Richard, your comments on the Martian echo mine: http://hmvf.co.uk/forumvb/showpost.php?p=99276&postcount=38 Still seems strange that Scammell went to the trouble and cost of building at least 2 prototypes with a B80 knowing them to be unsuitable, unless they acted on ministry instructions. Obviously AEC put their foot down otherwise we may have had B80 powered Militants:shake:
  12. You have talked yourself out of 1080lb on the back bogie, so there is more reserve than you thought.
  13. Just remembered there was also an experimental 6x6 gun tractor with the set forward axle; there is a picture somewhere with overall rear tracks fitted and towing a tank. Also JLR 80, a 6x6 with a Rolls B80 and yet another used for wading trials. 5 and counting:) It would be interesting to know why the B80/81 was not chosen for Explorer in the interests of standardization.
  14. Looks like it started off as an SV1S but it has been fitted with a different jib for engine removal.
  15. http://www.battleships-cruisers.co.uk/patrol_craft.htm scroll 2/3 down the page - HMS Kingfisher Also 1/4 down the page - P260 HMS Kingfisher, a smaller boat.
  16. Do they fit on the back without hitting the gear cases or are small spacers necessary? There is at least one running about with them just on the front which is asking for trouble if used on the road.
  17. You could be right: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Rms_queen_mary_2008.jpg It's certainly not Normandie or Imperator, the other ships with three exhaust pipes.:-D
  18. Goodyear 14.00x20 NDCC 18 ply were £660+vat back in the late '80s . I managed to get 10 new ones from Militants that were being broken up and had new spares for £100 each.
  19. David Crouch, who owns Crouch Recovery and deals in ex-military vehicles.
  20. Most Scammells go to Kibworth at some stage Tony, you should know. Even my old 5th wheel tractor spent some time there prior to going back to work in the Market Deeping area - has anyone seen it recently?
