  1. Welcome to the HMVF, your English is far better than my French ! Like the Land Rovers !
  2. I have a '41 G506 Chevrolet 1.5t cargo and it does around 15mpg sometimes a little more it's better if the rear tilt canvas is left off. I would have no worries about doing the trip you are considering as long as the truck is WELL maintained and you carry plenty of spares as you would in any old vehicle doing those sort of mileages. Main thing is preparation and planning, I drove my Ford GPW from UK to the Somme and then on to Normandy and took as many spares as possible, I needed none but better safe than sorry. Breakdown cover is a must as it could get very expensive should the worst happen. In my mind the Chevy is a good bet as its smaller, easier to park, cheaper for the ferry and drives very nicely without the noise of an open cab. That said these trucks were made squaddie proof so are tough and dependable so the ultimate choice is yours. You're welcome to come and have a drive in my truck if you want to compare it with other types to see which suits you best. I am taking it on the MVT 70th Normandy event next year so they really are capable of doing the job as long as you respect their age and limitations ( speed, mpg etc ). Good luck
  3. Hi Tony, Just watched the film, very moving. Thank you for helping these families gain some closure to an event so obviously dear to them. Hopefully one day their graves will be identified and properly marked. Best Wishes, David
  4. Welcome to the HMVF, I used to own a Green Goddess when the last ones were sold off, in a moment of madness and belt tightening I sold it, regretted it ever since  Not sure if I still have any books etc kicking around but if I find anything you're welcome to them.
  5. Welcome to the HMVF Mark, I've just bought a 1946 Cadillac 62 series sedan that was a staff car at Mildenhall (it still has the US hood number under the hood) then stored in a barn for years, just got it running today for the first time since 2007 ! Runs like a sewing machine with 44,000miles on the clock. Look forward to taking it to a show or two this year. Original paint and interior too !:-D
  6. Is it available to view yet and if so where/how ? Sounds interesting ! :wow:
  7. Hi there, I worked on the Lance missile system during my time in the Royal Artillery so was interested in a book I found the other week at Newark Militaria. The books title is British Nuclear Artillery by Tankograd No 9018, there is a large section on Corporal missiles with many pictures which may be helpful to you ? If you can't find the book and want me to copy the Corporal section just PM me and I will. Hope that helps ? Dave
  8. My Chevy G506 has them as well, nothing to worry about as the previous answer stated it's common practice on commercials. :-)
  9. Welcome to the HMVF Ryan look forward to seeing more pics as you do the restoration. :-)
  10. I've had many dealings with the DVLA over the years and usually my local office ( Lincoln ) is pretty helpful however whenever I have had to deal direct with Swansea it has been an absolute nightmare  Usually you end up going through the endless " if you want ......, press button 1 , if you .......... " etc. etc. When you eventually get to talk to a "real" person they seem to be reading from a set list and anything out of the ordinary throws them ! This whole situation will get a lot worse once the regional offices are closed as everything will need to go through Swansea, I dread to think what will happen then. My advice is to stick with the regional office if possible as you are dealing face to face with someone and IF you have to deal with Swansea insist on getting the name of the person you are speaking to and insist on dealing with them with any future problems. My '45 Ford GPW jeep is listed as an historic vehicle and has a dating certificate from the now closed Museum of Army Transport at Beverley, it is tax exempt and has a clear and original chassis number, it has also been inspected and appraised by a recognised MVT member, but because when it was imported in 1989 from France the importer stated it was NEW at first registration instead of " previously used overseas " I now have to get a yearly MOT ! While I am in favour of a yearly safety check I know that should I sell the new owner may not be so. I have tried to get it sorted but as usual the process is complicated and designed to put you off bothering. At the moment I have decided to leave things and MOT the jeep but it is madness that Swansea accepted the dating certificate for historic tax status but will not do the same for its date of manufacture. Obviously Ford GPW's were not made after WW2 so it was certainly NOT made in 1989 ! Good luck !
  11. Welcome to the HMVF, lots of Land Rover fans here
  12. If the top hose is hot and bottom hose is cold, it seems like there could be either an air lock and/or the water is not circulating. One thing to try is remove the thermostat and starting the engine afterwards you should see the water moving in the top of the rad when you rev the engine. Is the water pump actually turning I once looked at an engine that ran but got hot virtually straight away, turned out the fan belt was so loose it was slipping as the actual water pump was seized solid ! Very unlikely I know but it did happen, the fan belt finally failed. :red: To get rid of air locks try slackening the hose clips and bleeding the air out of each one then retightening the clips. The rad could be blocked so try back flushing it by running a hose through it the opposite way to normal flow, keep the hose running until the water is running clear, again this is easier done without the thermostat in place. Using an air line blow out the rad matrix from the inside out ie. opposite to normal air flow. The impellers in water pumps can gradually break up and so will then not shift the volume of water they should. All in all it is a question of working your way through things the clue is probably the hoses being different temperatures this does point to a circulation problem so thermostat, air locks, pump are all worth checking. Good luck.
  13. There are several size and types of tank available on ebay etc which would fit the bill, these are vented and safety approved so you should have no problem. I ran one on my Bedford MW and it worked fine. With a little thought you can hide it out of sight so it is not visible to the rivet counters. :-)
  14. Hi Kenny, you are in the right place to find something hidden away somewhere good luck and welcome to the HMVF :-)
  15. Welcome to the HMVF you're in good company here ! :-)
