  1. Hi all,

slightlyoff topic here.... my first job working on a funfair (Jennings of Devizes) for .50p a day including meals ( a can of light ale and a hot dog for lunch....the same for supper !)

If it was raining you could sleep in the truck cab, an old Scammel but when the weather was fine you slept under it.... no need to worry about the oil leaks for you were allowed a shower every sunday evening :-D :-D

  4. Sad news indeed,

met Alain first of all in late 74, whilst detecting i France he was selling relic SS helmets (double decal )with liners for the price of 1 franc   but i did not believe in buying relics in those days :dunno: it was he who introduced me to the owner of scrap yard in Trun.

seems a long time ago now.

  6. British army data book of wheeled transport 1939/45 describes the Jeep as Car light reconnaissance 4x4 5cwt then has in brackets, Jeep Peep and Blitz Buggy. Never heard the last before.

    Hi,

i believe the term `blitz buggy` was used by US troop stationed here (UK) referring to the Blitz which was on at the time (makes sense??)

  7. Hmmm,

some good points here i attend Beltring with the jeep but for me it is mainly a social meeting place for me both on the vehicle front and the militaria front, and know people who attend the show 2-3 times during the week and never set foot in the vehicle fields.

As for British trucks after the war there was one local firm (like others around the country) not to mention bus companies etc that converted military trucks to a `civilian spec`.

My mate owned a bedford MW converted to a twin axle tipper (as seen in the film Hell Drivers) but much rarer as it was, than a military truck, and when he sold it 2 years ago the price he quoted was 2.5 times the price of a military spec vehicle :dunno:

May be we have all become soft in our cosmopolitan modern society and drive U.S. vehicles so not to wear that nasty rough serge against our soft skin

PS there was a news bulletin on Meridian today re a Barn fire in Hampshire, and in one clip was a forlorn Matador which looked as if it to was burning

better get one HF be for the prices rise

  8. Absolutely.

"A Track Armoured Car" Chapter 6 is currently being written, describing Salisbury Plain Training Area during the hot dry summer of 76 when the washdowns were closed down to save water. Our Scorpions etc had inches-thick layers of almost white chalk dust all over, in particular all rearward-facing surfaces which sat in the eddy behind the moving vehicle.

Tonight I must mention the inches thick layer of dust.

We had enough of the `plains dust` after just one short jolly this year in May

i think Jack is still trying to brush his cargo bed clean :-D

  10. I'll apply for any records for mine from Deepcut, if I have any joy will let you know. Did you apply in writing for yours Ashley?

No a couple of years ago at beltring i met a chap who was involved with RLC museum and chatted to him and he told me it was virtualy impossible to trace the histories.

  11. Great pics Tone!

I will only do it if Ashley goes first - with his caravan!

    No problems Jack,

but i do not have a 50mm ball hitch on the jeep otherwise i would take up the challenge :pfrt: :pfrt:.

But for the honour of the Dorset branch i think you should at least have a go in the Jimmy, i do not mind being your co- pilot (just to show solidarity brother) ....Primus in Puddlus dorsetus old chap

  12. Any vehicle with a YH in the number would be a pre-1949 vehicle, re-registered, and British owned. If you have the YH number from the MoS plate (Minirstry of Supply) on a vehicle, you can find the Wartime serial number, for a fee, from the RLC museum at Deepcut.

    Hi,

the YH is a postwar number, mine is 46 YJ 36 several years ago i spoke to one of the guys at RLC he told me that all the documentation for this period had been destroyed years ago ?

  13.

Having just watched it again with the volume down, Sweenys mannerisms are not too different from that of Hitler during his early speeches. Just a wild off the cough thought there.

    Tim (too)

    Tim and all,

just watched the clip and Sweeny Adolph impression very lifelike indeed.

  14. Hi all,

had a phone call to say I was in the first 5 minutes....this was the part i missed :dunno: the wall of silence from some participants put them in a bad light not to mention as said here "voices with out faces" .

Seems most of the sellers of the `nazi gear` were continental (according to the programme) and some of the largest (waistline wise) crack troops i have ever seen. :schocked:

I really don't know ..... reenact, to take on a persona, may be well during the battle but at the end of the day some people can not be themselves.

I feel that some of the "beer tent" chatter can be heard through out the U.K. with out the support of a uniform of any kind.

As for the combat 18 guy`s etc could be again "beer tent / beer talk" when i rode a motorbike i met many a supposedly Hells Angel.

    Ashley

  15. I can remember returning to the U.K in 1974 and my aunt who lived 4 doors up showed me 5 large ornate frames which had the scrolls picture and the memorial plaque of members of her family killed during WW1. These will be yours when i go she often said as you like badges and medals.

Within two hours of her passing away they had disappeared to my cousins keep to be sold next day

What a f****ing shame

    Ashley

  16. Hi all,

i have very little desire to wear uniform with rank/ medals etc though i agree it does compliment (uniforms i mean) vehicles whatever their era / nationality.

I do know some re-enactors Britsh, German, Russian some reenact purely for historic portrayal. Though some others ...... politics play a large part (not to mention Enigma wearing his kilt :schocked: :schocked:)

A larger section of the equation is ........ how realistic should it be ? though being mainly a German militaria collector i must admit seeing the boy (for want of a better description) wearing Hitler youth uniform (at Beltring) was at first fairly disturbing but on talking to the lad he (at the time seemed level headed and interested in that particular collecting / re-enacting field)

Though i feel that any form of journalism covering the Third Reich period will at least be sensational (IMHO)

  17. Folks just had a call from kev giving me details of the remembrance Sunday bash which is growing into a very popular and successfull date in the mv calender - all are welcome.

So the details are Nov 11th, meet at 08:45 at the usual place ;-) and then we convoy down through Poole to Poole park for the service, the bands and the last post. Once finished there then down to Poole Quay to lay a wreath on the quay and then back through Poole to the Clay Pipe pub for lunch!

It is a special day out and Kev and Steve are saying that are all are welcome - put it in your diary - you will love it!

    See you there.

PS. Rumor has it that Ashely may make this one - but like I say, it is just a rumor

    Now Now Jack lad,

:box: :box: :box: :box: at least when i have been to the last two i have a 100% record in the time keeping league tables :pfrt: :pfrt: :pfrt:
