  1. Does anyone remember the old Dennis vehicle factory just off the main road at Guildford? It was demolished to make way for a new industrial estate in recent years, but up until its end, the walls were still painted in camouflage pattern. Richard
  2. Ah well, I did not know how long since the box was last split. Reason for asking was that using silicone in situations like this, it often has too much applied, pinches up "tight", but then the two halves fret and bolts come loose. There was a batch of Ferrets released, that had been in Cyprus, I have come across several of them with severe leaks form the transfer box. This is where silicone was used (not the offical recomendation) to seal the casings, and after a time it is working out, as too much was used and bolts are loose and unable to keep oil in it.
  3. As a matter of interest, had the two halves of the box been sealed using silicone sealant? Mating flanges look too clean for Hylomar, Wellseal or Red Hermetite!
  4. Try something really hard next time.......with all the Scammell men on here it was unlikely to go for long.
  5. As I replied earlier, my mate was doing some building work at the Fort when the Scammell was put up for disposal. He thinks it was taken to Shropshire area by some guys, for restoration. Richard
  6. hey Catweazle, good to have you back. Only trouble is, you were AWOL so have been demoted to Private, start posting again for promotion  Richard
  7. When I was working on cranes and recovery vehicles, my old workmate had a saying...."you never put a saddle on a dead horse". If you remember that, there is no excuse to getting them wrong!
  8. Hi John, Have a Happy Birthday...........I know you were doing something special today. Hope Bertha is progressing now. Catch up with you soon. Richard
  9. Chris, Looking at Steve Cain's photos on your website, the lorries labelled as Bedfords, are in fact Ford WOT3 30 cwt trucks, there is also a 6x4 3 ton truck, which looks to be a Leyland Retriever Breakdown Gantry, going by remains of iron work on the body, Next to it is a Crossley 4x4. There is an open cabbed truck with a spare wheel on the side of the cab, this looks like a Morris Commercial. Richard
  10. Bought two BSA WDB40 motorcycles in 1972, one Army and the other Navy. Joined Military Vehicle Conservation Group in 1978 (now MVT), first WW2 vehicle bought in 1980..............been on the slippery slope ever since  Richard
  11. It was identified as a trailer mounted Chance light, as you say
  12. I think that one was in a preserved Fort at Weymouth ( or maybe Portland ). A friend of mine was there doing some building work at the time that it was sold and taken away, I think to an enthusiast. When I next speak to him, will find out more. Richard
  13. Here is another Matador which I do not think Mike has posted before. It belonged at the time of the photo to Allan Lloyd of Colwall, near Malvern.
  14. I thought there was a better photo of this Matador, which is hiding behind a 1917 AEC Y type.....one for Great War Truck. Both AEC's were owned by Jack Henley who ran a transport fleet out of Paddock Wood.
  15. Nigel, Not sure what the Army recommended, but I have owned a number of BSA unit singles from B40, B25 and B50...they all had EP90 in the gearbox. Richard
  16. I think this one originally belonged to the bus operator, Barton Transport in Nottingham.
  17. TWN means it was disposed of from 75th "B" Vehicle Depot at Turweston, Bucks.
  18. This thread has reminded me of when I worked on Explorers whilst they were in Army service. The gearbox has to be shimmed and aligned spot on to the engine, because the Metalstik coupling does not allow for much misalignment, the rubber can melt if trying too much out of line. It was on a rare occasion that you had one in where the gear lever was a blur when driving, due to vibration, guess this is why they break sometimes.
  19. Jack, You would not want to see his knees, least, thats what he told us. Truth be known he was afraid of snakes and spiders running up his legs :-D, hence the trousers.
  20. Apparantly, Mrs Catweazle replied............ and we are supposed to go through some odd ritual to encourage him back I bet he is playing with his boat really :captain: :-D Richard
